Marvel's next animated film, "Next Avengers" Uhh... eww?

That's not saying much. Strange is like Thor--big enough to have turned up outside of the comics from time to time but not big enough to have anything decent done with him.

I'd argue it should be easier to do Thor right in a cartoon than Dr. Strange. I mean, it could be like a Viking MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. ;)

I will murder you in your sleep.

Heh. I do think Thor and his universe and adventures are a little easier to capture than Dr. Strange's. But who knows.

Is HULK VS. THOR the only THOR animated DTV up the pipeline? Because we saw round 1 of that in ULTIMATE AVENGERS and Thor went down at the bell. :(

"Thor: Son of Asgard" is set to be released in September 2009.

:hyper:I enjoyed the avengers movie, and Dr.Strange. I didn't like Avengers 2. I haven't seen the animated iron man movie, but i hear its best i don't. As for this movie, it doesn't look appealing, but i'll judge it when i see it.

I never saw much of GARGOYLES, but I hear it was my loss. Yeah, he's talented.

Yeah. Although when you look at past animation turns for Dr. Strange, the DTV was probably the best.

1. If you have the TOON DISNEY channel and a VCR (unless you are up at 4:30 in the morning) you can watch/record episodes of GARGOYLES every single day.

2. I also enjoyed the DR. STRANGE DTV movie. I loved the way they scaled back his power level and explained how magic worked.

OMT, I'm also a HUGE anime fan. So you're not alone in that regard.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you check out the episodes of the EXCELLENT 2nd season of the 90's FANTASTIC FOUR cartoon to see the most faithful and best version of Thor since the 60's MARVEL SUPERHEROES cartoon series.

The third NEXT AVENGERS trailer is up, and it still looks bad.

To me it seems awkward, as if the producers wanted to make either a 616 adventure or an ULTIMATE AVENGERS 3, and then at the last moment, decided to cater to CN network hacks when they aren't under any obligation to and shoved in a bunch of kids. Seriously, every time something remotely interesting happens, like Ultron or Old Hulk, the kids seem there like a sore thumb, saying something, well, tweenie. TEEN TITANS at least had some charm and defining moments. This just seems like phoning stuff in.

I mean, a DTV gives one more leeway with censors and mature content, and they're trying to compete with Bruce Timm with THIS!? I remember being underwhelmed by SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY, which had a lot of Timm repeating himself, but that was like THE GODFATHER of DTV animation compared to this.

Aside for Greg Wiesman, Marvel animation has NOTHING. Nothing! I can only hope WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN won't be this bad.

On the plus side, a trailer for HULK VS. WOLVERINE is coming Monday.

Justice League is, I am sorry, a hammier franchise than the Avengers, yet they had passionate people who truly cared to make it work. The Avengers have never gotten that in animation, and I seriously doubt they ever will.

Does anyone think they are running dry on ideas? I can think of atleast five animated movies that could be better than this.

Indeed.

I just think the talent they have on these animated DTV's isn't up to par. Whether that is because they are saving the best stock for upcoming TV shows remains to be seen when WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN starts. SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN is one season in and already excellent.

Huh. Looks pretty cool for something I initially wasn't even remotely interested in.

http://www.marvel.com/news/moviestories.4127.Watch_the_First_Hulk_vs~dot~_Wolverine_Trailer!

Steven Jay Blum is really doing strongly as Wolverine, and it is cool to have an actor portray the character across several shows and mediums. The last time that happened was of course with Logan's 90's VA, Cal Dodd. Blum's voiced Wolverine in video games, an upcoming show and now a DTV. I am curious if the continuity of this DTV will be loose enough that it could be a prequel to WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN.

Still, the premise looks like a 7 year old thought it up. A movie in which Hulk fights Wolverine titled HULK VS. WOLVERINE that offers nothing more than Hulk fighting Wolverine. Wow. I mean, SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY was the animated equalivent of Bruce Timm sighing and it still outdid most of Marvel's DTV's and had more to offer besides a single fight or gore. It had, GASP, PG rated language and adult situations like, SHOCK, alluding to sex. So did NEW FRONTIER.

In contrast, Marvel's DTV's are still acting like TV shows in subject matter and lines, just with added gore. Inserting some red fluid doesn't always a good show make.

Still, it looks better than NEXT AVENGERS. Although it still looks to me that the people making the Marvel/LG DTV's clearly don't know how to market and create an animated program for an audience beyond children and TV network expectations. There's no ambition, just a blind chase for dollars.

Hulk vs. Wolverine looks rather cool, Next Avengers looks dumb as hell.

Of course NEXT AVENGERS looks dumb.

HULK VS. WOLVERINE is a 75 minute movie based around one fight, and that's horribly stale. The trailer doesn't even look especially well paced. The animation doesn't pop. The fact that WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN's trailer has a Hulk vs. Wolverine scene in it, and had it first, makes this seem moot.

What's the status on Marvel Zombies animated feature?

I'm crossing my fingers that HvW has more of an actual story than a 75-minute fight scene, but whatever: I'll take a long fight over NEXT AVENGERS any day.

I just had a thought: what if HvW is where they'll finally finish that Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk mini-series that stalled after two issues a few years ago? That would be cool

Yeah, I think it's a bit premature to say Hulk vs. Wolverine sucks because it's just Hulk vs. Wolverine for 75 minutes. How do we know that's all it is? There may be an actual story that just centers on the fight. Hell, for all we know, it could be a really interesting look at Wolverine's days as a super-soldier for Department H, hunting down the Hulk as he rampages across the wilderness, and finally culminating in the titular fight. That'd be pretty nifty.

You guys DO know the movie isn't Hulk vs. Wolverine for over an hour, right? It's just a half n' hour. Hulk vs. Thor is 45 minutes.

Animation: DC > Marvel
Live action: DC < Marvel

So, basically, the HULK VS. is basically like THE ANIMATRIX and BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT (which I playfully dub, "The Batiatrix"). So can we call the "The Hulkiatrix"?

I will say, though, that a 30 minute cartoon of HULK VS. WOLVERINE at least sounds more reasonable given how simplistic the idea is, although that is essentially like an episode and a half of a TV show, without commercials. I would be more enthused if it was stated that the HULK VS. WOLVERINE segment would be a retelling or adaptation of INCREDIBLE HULK #140-142, which introduced Wolverine and has never been homaged in animation (due to most shows being unable to have guest stars from a certain network; Hulk was on UPN when the X-Men played in the 90's). That would also include the Wendigo showing up.

But that hasn't been stated, and I usually assume the worst about a project until I get more details, or see it for myself.

Spending more time on HULK VS. THOR makes sense because Thor is better able to fight Hulk on equal terms. Still, basing an entire DTV around two fights seems a little flat.

It is possible that the best Marvel cartoon talent may be geared towards TV at this point in time.
