Mary Grace's Good Deed

Penguins are the beeeest. Monkeys and rhinoceroses are scary to work with though, one will drench you in poop and the other will drown you with it.

Have any of you ever done volunteer work before?
If so, what kind? Why?

I'm only taking 3 classes this semester and am not working so I figured instead of sitting around on my ass all day/shopping/getting drunk I could actually put forth some sort of effort, minimal as it may be.

I was thinking about volunteering at one of the zoos maybe, or an animal shelter. It sounds like a good idea in my head right now but once I'm scraping elephant **** off the floor I know I'll be over it in a heartbeat.

Good for you, if you stick with it. If you don't, though, you'll just be proving yourself to be the worthless skag so many here seem to think you are. Prove them wrong, Mary Grace! PROVE THEM WRONG!!!!!! :cmad:

My first volunteer gig was being a teachers aide in an ESOL(english as a second language) class. It was at night and I didn't feel like I was really helping. I was suppose to sit amongst the students and give a hand if they got stuck with something.

I helped out at a couple of halfway houses for women. The first consisted of ladies that were given a little more freedom and show they could be reponsible and trusted. The other was group of women that were a little more street and scared me a bit. All I did was sleep over and be there in case something happen,I was in my early 20's babysitting women that could've been my mother. :csad: Got to be too depressing and again I didn't feel utilized.

My next volunteer job was at a theater/art house, not enough stucture and I need to feel needed and kept busy.

I've done some usher work at a theater,so boring, good play though.

I answered calls for a suicide hotline with a 55% success rate in University.
You only got 55% of your callers to not kill themselves?

I might steal an animal.

I've been wanting to volunteer at the National Zoo,it's a huge process to fill out the form. The plus side is some positions have the potential for travel and/or land a job.

Don't they have the... read out procedure for that in some kind of booklet?
Yeah.

Caller: Hello, could I please speak to Mrs. Thompson?

(pause)

CLW: I'm sorry, I have no record of a Mrs. Thompson.
Caller: But I just saw her in there yesterday.
CLW: I'm sorry, I have no record of a Mrs. Thompson.
Caller: (angry) BUT I JUST SAW HER IN THERE YESTERDAY.
CLW: I'm sorry, nothing is coming up on my screen for a Mrs. Thompson...

:ugh: I'm glad I don't do that anymore.

It was a way to volunteer without actually having to get my hands dirty. I'm not touching sick people. (And the hospital was close to my house.)

Same reason as you. I had time on my hands and figured I should do something with it. The animal shelter probably would have been better.

I volunteer at a home for wayward teenage girls. It's quite rewarding.

Easy there. If you want me to hook you up with a job, just ask.
