Mass Shooting at Christchurch Mosque

One thing that hits me about the coverage of this terrorist atrocity, is the way the terrorist is being described in the media.

After every ISIS attack, the perpetrators were called ‘Muslim Terrorists’, whereas with this shooting (much like with Brevik) no one is calling Tarrant a ‘Christian Terrorist’, despite some of the religious things he talked about in his pathetic little manifesto.

Interesting (disturbing) double standard.

Isn’t he just the same as an ISIS terrorist? Shouldn’t he be described as such?

There are some differences as well as similarities. According to some coverage there’s a lot of contradictory stuff in his manifesto, whether that was deliberate or not is up for speculation.

He wasn’t part of a group with recognized goals and affiliations so he is dissimilar from Islamic extremists in that sense. He may have been Christian but it’s unlikely his attack was designed to further any cause directly related to Christianity.

Until Ya’llqueda releases an actual manifesto these kinds of guys are essentially lone wolf terrorists and not the same as the guys that did the Paris attack, etc.

Seriously New Zealand? Of all places. This is very, very sad. A tragedy at a place of worship where people go to seek guidance and comfort through faith.

The rhetoric coming out of far-right elements in Western countries is alarming. Not enough people realise that immigrants (especially Muslim immigrants) are being used as a scapegoat for society's ills. This is evident in the Western world, where domestic issues are ignored or downplayed in favour of stereotyping immigrants, significantly exaggerating the threat posed by refugees, and acting like the very fabric of society is being torn apart due to increasing non-Whiteness. This is very a sad state of affairs.

Don't get me wrong immigration, illegal immigration, etc. are all legitimate issues, but the fear-mongering over minorities and Islam is getting seriously out of control and destroying any chance of real debate.

Sadly... We should just open a Mass Shooting Thread at this point.

Only about 1% of a small population and this is enough to target them.

And that's not to say that there's not terrorism justified by an extremist reading of Islam which targets those in the West as well as other Muslims... But that's not justification for these tragedies.
I already sort of did one of these almost two years ago.

People have been ringing the alarm bells about the reemergence of Far Right for a few years now. Security agencies, journalists and others have been talking about extremist groups being on the rise.

The Alt-Right is just far right ideology repackaged for a new generation.

Anyway back on topic

Here are some New Zealanders performing a Haka for the victims. (Haka is a ceremonial dance of Maori culture).

If these scum bags want to kill Muslims... why don't they volunteer to go Syria and fight the Muslims who shoot back?

Cowards. Disgusting cowards.

I’m a bit late to this, but I think it’s a disgrace - not only the act itself, but the filming of it, and the alleged rumours that he was being cheered on via people streaming the activity. It’s sickening, and a large part of this, as stated by other posters here, is down to the bias of the media.

Muslims are not the problem. No single religion is a problem (except for maybe scientologists and flat earthers; but they don’t need to be shot). It’s about time the masses woke the hell up and started to realise this. If people are that intent on killing, they should turn they attention on those (like ISIS) that’ll shoot back, and not target innocent people just going about their day.

The world is truly messed up, and I genuinely feel for the generations to come.

First time post here in this thread so to begin with, my prayers and thoughts and love to all those affected, barbaric and hatred in this world MUST not be allowed to rule. Secondly, unbelievably impressed by NZ PM, she has conducted herself and others with a compassion and understanding rarely seen by any politician from any country, she is a beacon of dignified hope amongst the type of shambles we see in the UK and US for example. Love, peace, unity.

Seems like the Austrailian senator is just hell bent on getting fired.

Fraser Anning is (rightfully) a very lone voice in the Australian political landscape and is only there due to a technicality of the voting system here and not directly elected owing to his views.

Hopefully not re-elected owing to his despicable views.
He only got there because a previous Senator was disqualified. Anning only got 19 votes. And he's been censured as well. He whined about it being an attack on free speech. It was an attack on innocent people, that much is certain.

The Australian Senate has formally censured a lawmaker who sparked outrage by blaming the New Zealand mosque attacks on Muslim migration.

Senator Fraser Anning, a far-right independent, made his comments on the day of the shootings in Christchurch which killed 50 people last month.

On Wednesday, lawmakers from across the political spectrum condemned his "inflammatory and divisive" remarks.

Mr Anning said the censure was "an attack on free speech".

[...]

Mr Anning entered parliament in 2017 as a replacement for a disqualified senator, despite receiving just 19 votes in the 2016 election

Last year he also drew condemnation for using the words "final solution" - a term invoked during the Holocaust - while calling for race-based immigration restrictions.
