Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

I wonder what Fox's plans are for the franchise going forward if this movie doesn't perform as well as Dawn.

All I want to know is if the Icarus spaceship is seen or referenced at all. Don't go into detail, just a simple yes or no, please. Thanks.

Putting it in spoiler tags for other people's sake:

No.

I am trying to remember but I don't think Summer of 2014 was jammed pack with quality movies like it is this year. Tough tasks to go against Spider-Man and a Christopher Nolan movie

You should probably edit it out of your post too, just saying.

Just like, an organized list saying what comics/books/etc. there are to check out (and maybe which ones are good and which ones aren't lol).

I'm not sure about the comics bit the two official prequel novels are Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm and War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations.

Both are good, but Revelations is better. Firestorm gives you a lot of insight to Koba and what happened to him prior, it also features Dreyfus heavily and there's quick glimpses of Caesar and Cornelia's relationship forming.

With Revelations the Colonel is in it, but the story really follows Blue Eyes and Rocket on a mission. It also has a few chapters from Cornelia's POV and it checks in with Caesar and Red (the gorilla that betrayed them) as well.

As for the box office numbers, that's still good but its too bad they couldn't match Dawn. But that's to be expected opening a week after Spiderman.

July was pretty much void of anything worth watching besides Dawn, so if you wanted to watch a great movie then, it was pretty much your only choice. (Not that I was complaining...)

Looking forward to this movie.

As for box office. Perhaps if the film weren't so grim and had more joy and stuff, more colour. Or so it goes.

hoping this ends up being one of my favorite trilogies.

Saw this yesterday and tbh, I was disappointed. It's easily the weakest of the 3 films and although the 1st act of the film is great, the remaining 2 just don't do it for me at all. DOTPOTA is an infinitely better film.

Really loved it, but one thing I wished was different.

I would have preferred a Watership Down type of fate for Caesar.
A sort of flash forward thing where he is old and respected and sees the ape community thriving due to his efforts.

I think the word of mouth for this film will be enough to give it strong numbers going out. Grossing this much between a well received Spiderman and Dunkirk is still something to celebrate.

That would have been cool. I personally am not a huge fan of "hero dies at the end," but I thought it was pretty well done here, if laid on thick with religious symbolism and a drawn out scene of Caesar sloooowly slumping over.

This much? It not a lot, and Spider-Man is coming in around 50m this weekend. Probably less. So, it's weak.

Keep beating that drum, man.
True story given all this box office grumbling. Family friendly stuff attracts more of an audience. I find the first film struck a balance in that regard. The last one and these new trailers not so much.

As for that drum, ok.

In my seat now, and I'm not worried about BO numbers. I'm focused on me about to watch an amazing film.

Dawn made more than Rise, though.

Theirs nothing wrong with a grim film. Apes has a smaller fan base than spiderman. Sadly their wasn't many weeks this summer where a blockbuster type movie wasn't bein released.

You're saying that the first movie was more family friendly so that's why it attracted a larger audience even though it opened lower?

Just watched it and it was so good! They didn't really seem to hint at anything to further the franchise so I am going to guess that this is the end for now.

In part, sure. I mean the multiplier in part, speaks to that. I thinki tracked a wider range of demos during it's run. James franco, cute apes and the red shirt wearing lead in a pixar esque zoo 2nd act. Along with the tone and more or less happy ending save for the final last bit there. Dawn was pretty grim/glim/gun toting/laying on couch wounded all day/no cities...i digress. I loved it, but not really the repeat family business fare if u ask me.

I'm sure the sequel opened higher, it's a *sequel to a super well received film...for starters. That's usually how it goes unless the first one is a mega thing(ep7/avengers). Break out movies ala pirates turn things into WW brands and create a momentum. If Dawn was the first movie and rise was the sequel(story logic aside) you'd see the expected happen. Point being, it's not an all things being equal scenario. Things offset each other. Sometimes we see the fall out in the second sequel. I think the box office is in part reflecting this. I watch that trailer, i'm not taking my pixar cousins, the way i did the first.

I see other reasons, about second sequels in general, but I've yet to see the film.

That was something special, incredible movie. 10/10 for me just as my score was for Dawn. Reeves directing was excellent. The acting, the musical score, the cinematography all top notch. This movie had a ton of heart and was an emotional ride, so beautifully done. What a trilogy, and very rare the 3rd film is as good as the first two. In this case I find it reversed. With Rise being very good, but Dawn and War are the standouts and rightfully so.

This was one of my most anticipated and I couldn't be any happier. It didn't disappoint one bit. Absolutely loved it. If this was the conclusion to the trilogy, it's done perfectly. But if they do want to down the road continue, they definitely could.

I finally got the first perfect trilogy through this film. Now waiting for John Wick 3 for that second one hopefully.

Definitely one of my favorite trilogies. And one of the few trilogies where the final film in the series is amazing.

I wonder why they decided to change Cornelius' name? Weren't they referring to him as Milo in the Dawn DVD/interviews/etc? That's the 2nd time they changed Caesar's son's names. Blue Eyes was originally River.
