Looked around to see if there was a thread about this character and didn't so posting this. I am highly curious at this character, as well as the casting. Matthew Modine joined the cast a while ago under the character named Nixon. Not much has been informed about what this character is all about, but Matthew Modine, while not a huge A-List movie star...is a good actor and usually worth some good amount of screen time.

The obvious question, is whether or not he's playing the real Nixon in a flashback or a newly created character named Nixon lol. But really, any news on this character, how he will play into the story....if he's a villain? Is he someone trying to steal the mayorship from Garcia? Or is he just a higher up corrupt politician? Or is he something else entirely? Im thinking politician and something along the lines of how Christopher Walken's Max Shreck was portrayed in the older movies. And I mean that only in a sense that it's a brand new character made up for the movies....and alot of people enjoyed his character as a side villain. But that's what keeps coming to mind for me, a political character that will somehow factor into the overall story and has a hidden agena. But if anyone has any news on this character, please post it if you can.

Otherwise, what do you guys think on this character?

Where did this information about this Nixon character come from?

A politician who is strongly anti-Batman is my guess

It is also possible that the name "Nixon" will not be used at all.

Corrupt politician perhaps? That would be interesting.

Sounds too cliche and hamfisted. The politician who is against the hero is equated to Richard Nixon, the man behind Watergate.

Agreed. Though a corrupt politician named Nixon is kind of obvious.

It seems too obvious to have a politician named Nixon.

Perhaps he is a rival business CEO to Wayne Enterprises with some dirty secrets-ties to the bad guys in this film?

An FBI or higher up law enforcement agent thats dirty?

Def intresting

You would think a politician named Weiner posting pictures of his junk on twitter would be too cliche too. :awesome:

Seriously.

I mean why not use the name Rupert Thorne who seems to match the description of this character to a tee.

I'll admit that "Nixon" isn't exactly a subtle name for a corrupt politician, but is "Thorne" really any better?

One is real. One is from Batman. I think the "Batman" one ought to fit the bill.

They are both really obviously corrupt sounding names (for different reasons). I don't see how one is better than the other because it's from the comics.

Assume the information about Modine playing "a corrupt politician" is true at all, of course.

Rupert Thorne isn't an established face or name of corruption for general audiences. Only us Batman fans know that. Also I had never even given his last name that conation of corruption until you mentioned it.

Plus he's an actual character in the Batman mythos that matches the description.

More corruption?!

Gothamites sure are suckers for them eh?....

You don't think "Thorne" obviously sounds like the name of a bad guy? How about "Sinestro"? "Professor Hugo Strange"?

So what? That means nothing. Unless it is actually meant to be the same character, giving him a recognizable name from the comics is just a cheesy easter egg. We get enough cheesy comic book easter eggs in every other superhero movie, I'm glad Nolan tends to shy away from that sort of thing.

Yeah like Salvatore Maroni or Carmine Falcone. He certainly doesn't shy away from using characters from the mythos and then reshaping them.

Are you seriously comparing Thorne to Sinestro? You do realize Thorne is a relative common English surname?

Whereas Sinestro and Strange are not. I guess people thought Lucius Fox was going to be sneaky and treacherous because thats a common caricature of a Fox.

It didn't even occur to me before you metioned it. It's no way as obvious as Sinestro or Hugo Strange.

I don't know if he'll be corrupt or not, but that he's anti-Batman seems almost like a given. He's the new DA probably.BTW, I think this was the role Treat Williams was up for.

Yeah, but those characters were presumably meant to be Maroni and Falcone from the beginning. The writers took characters from the comics and altered them to fit into the plots of the movies. Whereas you are suggesting taking an original character created by the writers of the films and changing his name to that of a character from the comics.

As is Nixon. "Strange" is rarer, but it is common enough for there to be a Wikipedia page for it.

That's kind of the point. Lucious isn't a treacherous character. If you came up with a sneaky, treacherous character, then named that character Fox, that would be pretty cheesy.

We don't know if he's an original character or not. All we know is that he's a corrupt politician which Thorne is.

Again my original post just said that maybe Nixon is code for the actual character of Rupert Thorne.

Just a presumption.

Still disagree with the whole Thorne topic though. I seriously never drew a direct connotation of corruption due to his last name.

I don't really understand what you mean. Do you mean that Matthew Modine isn't actually playing a character named Nixon, and that is just misinformation to throw us off from his actual character? Or do you mean that, within the film, Matthew Modine's character uses the codename "Nixon" to hide his actual identity? Neither one seems likely, especially not the former (I remember people being sure that "Engel" was actually a code name for the Riddler or some other major comics character, and we know how that turned out).

Maybe it's just me, but "Thorne" sounds like a bad guy name. It doesn't bring to mind corruption specifically, just badness in general.
