wait wait wait..... the Riverdale actress????????'
this is a huge no from me.

Marvel can do much better
viIxGxY.jpg

...Have you seen her in Riverdale? She's an amazing actress, especially in Season 3. Wayyy better than KJ Apa and if I'm being honest, most of the young actors on the show minus Cole Sprouse who had some great moments in S2.

Reinhart plays arguably the most layered, complex character in the show. She's GREAT with drama hence why I have her pegged as Jean.

she gives me cheap-romcom tv actress vibe.

Marvel uses to go for different type of actors, either bigger names, awarded actors or a hot indie actress. No shade to her. She's cute, a bit sexy in a sense, but lacks other qualities to play a role such as Jean Grey.

Like, what other qualities? Jean is an everyman type character who sometimes struggles with her abilities. The actress has to be able to portray a well-rounded character with aptitude in drama and emotional resonance (being a telepath) Reinhart has already demonstrated these qualities. And Reinhart is an awarded actor.. For her performance in Riverdale...

I don't think there is a particular type of actor Marvel goes for. It entirely depends on the property and/or who fits a particular character the best which is determined by casting calls and auditions. X-Men in particular I could see them approaching the same way they did Homecoming. Casting unknowns and newcomers breaking into the industry as the students and filling out the rest of the cast with veterans. Zendaya was the most famous actress in the cast. Tom was breaking in and he was an indie film drama actor (all of the finalists on the shortlist were), Laura Harrier for instance was indeed a romcom TV actress and she was cast in a main role. Jacob Batalon had no real acting credits aside from a short film. Tony Revolori was an indie actor and the rest of the kids were all unknowns. Harris Dickinson is actually in the same position Holland was in before he was cast as Spider-Man. Indie film actor who mostly does drama/serious movies. Kiki broke out with her second film role in Beale Street.

If you wanna look back at the actual X-Men movies (the OT), most of them were unknowns too. Marsden, Famke, Rebecca, Hugh, Shawn (whom was mostly a TV actor like Reinhart) all were fresh faces. Halle was the most "Known" but she was not in her prime and still early in her career. Ditto for First Class (McAvoy, Holt, pre-HG JLaw and Fassbender). The Apocalypse unknowns minus Sophie Turner.

Famke alone proves my point.
Jean Grey is a larger than life character, a real icon from the comics, a big one. It cant be played by any actress. The actress needs a certain kind of vibe, an aura, its complicated to explain, but she cant be just any actress from a young adult tv show. The Jean actress has to be a really special find, with a lot of different qualities.
Famke, imo, wasnt the perfect casting, but she's one of a kind, and thats why she was a good choice, at least for the Dark Phoenix side of the character. Sophie isnt perfect either, but she has something unique that fits the good and young side of Jean.

no no
Sophie was terrible casting in every way

Thinking about 'Apocalypse' again, there's an alteration that might have worked. A common complaint was that JLaw as Mystique got too much screen time at the expense of the rest of the X-ensemble. Also I didn't care for Magneto's melodrama plot that gives him this family just so they can be killed off to give him an easy justification to join the Horsemen. So imagine if we swap those: give Erik's plot to Mystique; after the events of DofP she retreated to Austria and has been cohabiting with her new BFF Destiny. She gets killed (which she did in the comics), Raven is very sad, and she becomes a Horseman. Even that moment with Quicksilver's "I'm here for my family" can be given to Nightcrawler instead.

wow, never had thought about a plot like that.... and yeah, as much as I dislike Jlaw in this franchise, that sounds ten times better than what we got.
more faitful and Nightcrawler would have a more relevant role than what Kinberg gave him.

Well, Famke had largely started in indie dramas, thrillers and romcoms before she landed the role in X1. Smaller projects + she was a model. So she already had "It".

There were a lot of actresses in the running for Jean on Apocalypse. Elle Fanning, Saoirse Ronan and Hailee Steinfeld. Sophie won out because of GOT but I do think she's actually a good choice for Jean. The nearly non-existent material she had to flesh out her character didn't do her any favors. Maybe they could have worked on her accent a bit more, though. Imo

Now somebody like Katherine McNamara whose name I've seen come up multiple times for Jean -- is a TV actress but unlike Reinhart, she's not very good. Riverdale doesn't have great writing but she really elevates the material.

Uhhh, either way. Do you have anybody in mind for Jean? Who in your eyes fits the qualities that a character like Jean requires

Sadly, I got no real ideas on casting, since I know all of jack and s**t about younger actors

now if we wanna cast mid-30's, there's some names that spring to mind, but mid 20's i'll have to defer to y'all

now that you mentioned Elle Fanning.... I find her an awesome actress and has that unique/special aura around her..... but in terms of look.... I dont see Jean 100%, and thats f**** up, because she has a name already and reputation. I dont see Jean in Saoirse either, but I find her awesome too. See? its complicated. Sophie was my first choice from all of them, and the fact that she's british may make her less of a perfect choice. I dont know..... I always have a hard time with casting suggestions... because I dont use to 'find' the perfect choice.

Well.... last year I thought Millie Bobby Brown was kind of perfect for MCU Kitty Pryde, but the more time passes, the less I see it, and she has that "older" vibe about her, kind of smarter than how I envision young Kitty, being naive and all..... so.... dont know. Same thing that happend to me with Ellen, I love her, and I really liked her casting for X3, but years later I found her "above the character" in a sense, because I see Ellen quite smart and "on a new level", if you get what I mean.

That annoys the hell out of me, really. Not the fact that they gave Eric a motivation to join Apocalypse. But because they put all this effort of coming up an arc just for Eric, a character who's been overly explored and developed since 2000... but put virtually no effort whatsoever for A-Lists like Storm, Psylocke and Angel.

*deep breath*

But this will be over soon. It will be over soon.

This is why the job of a casting director is very important. They round up a couple of actors who the director and Producers/Studio like and have them do screen tests and chemistry reads (in the case of supporting roles) until the best gal or guy wins the role. Sometimes if the studio isn't satisfied -- they even bring in a whole new set of actors/actresses.

Truth be told, Saoirse was who I was pulling for back then, just because of her immense talent as an actress and ability to channel her emotions in such a sincere, powerful way. But really -- I was fine with all of the names on the shortlist. I could see them having another go at the role in the near future when Marvel sends out the casting call for X-Men. Fanning in particular could give us an amazing Jean Grey. She's still ripe to being snatched up for a big budget franchise as she's not a big name yet.

Also, what do you think of Annalise Basso? She's lesser-known but very talented. Still needs her big break and she loves the MCU.

I've been feeling the same way about Millie these past couple of months ironically. She has become such an in-demand actress that I feel like I'd rather an unknown play Kitty. Because at this point, if she were cast as Kitty -- I'd see Eleven as Kitty and not Kitty Pryde personified. Same reason I'd rather an unknown play Dazzler. Jayden Bartels for example I could see working: she has the type of vibe a young Shadowcat should have.

Btw Peyton Elizabeth Lee from Disney Channel's Andi Mack (award winning show) would be a killer Jubilee

Ellen was actually a really good choice when she was cast and I would have been very interested in seeing a Kitty Pryde movie with her as the lead, set in a post-Logan world. Just to get see the post-apocalyptic world from another point of view. Maybe even bring Laura and the Transigen kids into the movie, get more insight into what happened at Westchester.

Sadly, I got no real ideas on casting, since I know all of jack and s**t about younger actors

Well, Rose Leslie was my original choice for Jean when the deal was announced.

you and me are on the same boat. Right now I preffer unknowns for Kitty and Dazzler, and even more since I know Marvel will turn both into stars, so we dont need a current tv star for any of them. CREATE the star, Marvel.

and yeah, 100% agreed with Ellen leading a Kitty movie. either back in the day or after Logan. sadly Kinberg is anti-original cast and put his foot on it.

I mentioned before that I think Bobby could be a way of making the X-Men stand out in representation, by bringing something other superhero franchises don't have. Of course, they still need more POC, but the X-Men also have a staller cast of women.

Pushing the girls upfront might be another way of making the X-Men stand out, since the MCU also lack when it comes to female superhero.

So Ororo, Jean, Kitty, Rogue, Betsy, Alison, Jubilee, Laura, Lorna, Emma, Mystique, Dani, Illyana, Rahne, Domino, Rachel, etc... should all come in full force.

I would like an original team of 6 with 4 X-ladies. Storm, Jean, Rogue and Psylocke, with Cyclops and Beast for the guys. And then Iceman, Kitty and Jubilee as students.

Sad. If I knew Dark Phoenix was going to be the last X-Men movie, I would have preferred it be the OT cast and have it be set in the post-apocalyptic world of Logan. I wouldn't have it be Dark Phoenix but rather Onslaught. Bring back Marsden, Shawn, Halle, Ellen and Anna and end this franchise the way it should be ending. With a conclusion to the story that began in X1.

With a conclusion to the story that began in X1.

That movie will probably end where X1 began. I won't be surprised if they managed to get a Hugh Jackman cameo, and the movie will end with Jean/Scott/Ororo (or Xavier) meeting Logan and probably a young Rogue.

I mean, they know it's the last movie.

I feel like the X-Men are coming back to Marvel in the best possible moment. They just got a Oscar nomination for Best Picture; they understand the importance of representation in a different level now; they seem to be very invested in inclusion; their understand how to make major crossovers; there are upcoming miniseries tied with the movies; they are taking more creative risks, step by step; and now there's even a possibility of Black Widow being rated r...

It's the best possible moment for the X-Men to come back.

I wish marvel would hurry up with the xmen. I’m dying to be able to see a good xmen film again without having to add that I’m disgusted with Bryan singer. He really has disgraced so much.

It’s so horrible for lots of reasons but personally I saw xmen 2 just as I was figuring out I’m gay. When I saw there was a gay guy directing a big blockbuster movie, not just some tiny Arthouse thing I was so inspired. I hate that he proved the bigots right, at least specifically with him.

Plus as far as I’m aware there haven’t been any other gay comic book movie directors? So there’s no one else to be inspired by. At least Rebecca sugar is still an inspiration at least

Joel Schumacher :oldrazz:

Reading that article, along with the general disgust I felt for Singer's innumerable actions, this sentence really made my blood boil: "At its core, [X-men] is a film about a group of kids who feel alienated until the much older Professor Xavier shows them that their mutations are really superpowers--a compelling allegory for gay teenagers struggling to come to terms with their sexual identity."

Bryan has forever tainted the X-men name.

It's really a shame that the higher-ups have known about this abuse and did nothing to stop it. We've been hearing about Singer being an abuser for years and it kept being swept under the rug. I hope he actually faces justice this time.

Yeah and especially apparently he used to name drop the xmen to do it. You know, “hey, do you want to join the xmen and be a superhero? Come back to my room etc etc”. What a horrible way to dirty the beautiful idea kirby and Lee started with

I don’t think the xmen are permanently dirty now because of singer. His time has passed and it would be great to show a new era, fighting exploiters like him. I mean, the xmen are just such an essential story especially for our current times

Scott Summers - Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver)
an.jpg
Jean Grey - Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody)
lucy-boynton-3.jpg

Both amazing young actors (rising stars, starred in a number arthouse films) who exhibit all of the right qualities to portray these characters in the MCU.

Also helps that Lucy resembles Cockrum's Jean from early Claremont. :yay:
