Hugh Jackman was great because it captured the essence of what the character is. Being kind of ugly and his short stature was never a defining feature of Wolverine as much of his grizzled, world weary nature so it didn’t matter that Jackman was cast just like having dark hair wasn’t a core feature of Bond hence why Daniel Craig was cast. I’d rather have an great actor who perfectly embodies the character in spirit who doesn’t look like the character over having an lesser actor who looks like they ripped straight from the source material. It's always mattered. Jackman was great in spite of his height. Everyone want's good actors filtered by the characteristics of the role. Otherwise when you have a great actor it doesn't matter which role you give them.
Otherwise let's have top actors like Leonardo Dicaprio as Colossus and Meryl Streep as Kitty Pryde.
Maybe even Judi Dench as Cyclops and Patrick Stewart back as Storm this time.![]()
So we agree then. I was taking issue with "Since when has “looking the part” always mattered in casting?" I still maintain always, it's pretty much all you need to think about aside from the obviously most important part which is getting a good actor who can nail the essence of a character. If you didn't need to consider these characteristics then DeVito could be doing a similar height swap and playing Colossus if he managed to nail the essence of Piotr's caring nature, Russian background and relationship with his sister, brother, Kitty etc.Hugh Jackman was great because it captured the essence of what the character is. Don’t get me wrong, physical resemblance that matches the source material certainly plays a role in casting cbm but I do think certain cases(not all) this shouldn’t be a factor. Does Jeffrey Wright “look” like Commissoner Gordon from the comics? I would say no, but that doesn’t matter since he’s a great actor who embodies the essence of the character which always the most important.
I could definitely see Craig or Mortensen as Magneto. With me it's Daniel Craig or Viggo Mortensen for Magneto and Lance Reddick or Colin Salmon for Xavier.
I could definitely see Craig or Mortensen as Magneto.
Aren't they about the same height? Also similar to McKellen on height. I think having presence is what Magneto needs. Craig at his best could do it I think if he was totally into the role.Mortsensen is a great shout, saw Greenbook not too long ago and he plays the type well.
Daniel craig is too short imo
Well I didn't cast Wolverine. That was FoX. I already said I don't want a tall and sexy guy for The Wolverine.Since when has “looking the part” always mattered in casting? Did the tall, handsome, Hugh Jackman look the part of the ugly, short, Wolverine?
But I still don’t want Denzel as either Magneto or Xavier. Not because he “doesn’t look part” he just doesn’t seem like a great fit.

No, I definitely agree with you. And I can see the value in updating Magneto for modern times and bringing awareness to another atrocity that many people might not know about. And it stays true to why Claremont made Erik a Holocaust survivor.I think the tough thing about changing Magneto's history is that the Holocaust just places him at such a monumental time in history, that any erasure of it will potentially feel crass. I'm not a history buff though, so I can't truly say one way or the other whether there are events in the world's more immediate history that can compare.
My most recent tattoo artist, however, is Bosnian and mentioned to me how he had to flee the country, something he was only able to do because he had family in the US, back in the 90s due to the civil war and ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims happening there. I'm not sure if that's the way to go to bring Magneto's history current, but it could be a teachable moment for a lot of folks who may not be aware of this moment in time.
I'm not trying to say one global atrocity fits all or anything, but perhaps the best way to make Erik's story timely is to tie it to an event that would put him at a similar age to many viewers and to represent a group of people that don't have the strongest voice in media, while also shining a light on the shifting view of Islam seen since (particularly in a post-9/11 US).
I hope all that makes sense and doesn't offend.
That's very imaginative and I'd love to see thisI doubt there's anything to even scoop at this point, especially when it comes to a second movie, but I've had the idea of combining the Savage Land, a prehistoric place in Antarctica maintained by technology, Krakoa, a living mutant island, and Tabula Rasa, an evolutionarily distorted region in Montana.
I'd have "the Savage Land" be an island off the coast of Antarctica that Mister Sinister mutated. A powerful "mutant" in Antarctica comes up on Cerebro, so the X-men investigate and find the tropical island with prehistoric creatures. They become trapped on the island that begins a crash course to a populated continent.
X-Men in the Savage Land is a dream at this point (a very good dream though lol). Your idea certainly sounds interesting though.I doubt there's anything to even scoop at this point, especially when it comes to a second movie, but I've had the idea of combining the Savage Land, a prehistoric place in Antarctica maintained by technology, Krakoa, a living mutant island, and Tabula Rasa, an evolutionarily distorted region in Montana.

You can't do something like Savage Land right off the bat.
I would
I don't get why you would though. Seems like an insane leap when you have to establish mutants, their place in the world, and a superhero team of mutants.
When they’re not on missions, yeah. Do you want the whole film to take place in the Savage Land? I’d assumed you’d still want a mansion base too.Meh New York is New York and we've seen the X-men in a beautiful mansion in like 12 movies.

Oh that makes sense for a totally new X-Men that is set very far apart from the Fox X-Men. I want Xavier's dream to still be important and for there still to be a mansion base, but they don't need to spend that much of the films there. I want to see more time on field missions in exotic new locations (with Xavier back at the mansion), and the X-Men getting to know each other during these journeys/missions. Savage land is probably my favourite possible location and I can't wait to get to that.Yup but I want set pieces and settings that scream "things are ALL NEW and ALL DIFFERENT" haha. I'm actually pretty flexible on the mansion too but that's a whole other thing.
