They should have made him Mel Duncan instead of James Olsen from the start.

I think Turtle Boy would have been a more logical, interesting and welcome approach!

Jimmy in Diggle's cast-off Spartan / Guardian costume is pretty ... meh to me. Maybe they'll do something interesting with the Guardian, but if they're having so much trouble coming up with a credible storyline for Jimmy, then I'd prefer to see him return to the Daily Planet in Metropolis.

Couple things. I'm interested to see where they go with this. Clearly they are searching for a reason to Jimmy-on, and this could fire the character up. Having a super woman turn you down could really dig into a man's ego, and this may be a mojo-hyping trip needed for him to feel alpha again.

Another is that this is suit 0.1. It could progress and, with a little help from Winn, become more like the Guardian suit from the comics, and with the correct coloring.

And if it doesn't work out, this could be James' Laurel-out moment. The only death the show has had is a throw-away friend character who was on for two episodes. A new network, a new DEO, a new Kara (just in case she's going bi...) and a dead James to bring home the realz!

I wonder how James is going to come by his costume. Will he have Winn pilfer the DEO armory?

That could be interesting. And it could help to explain Superman's future absence if Kara feels so guilty about the death of Jimmy (i.e. Clark's best friend) that she deliberately closes herself off from dealing with Clark on any level. But, it seems a little too dark for the Supergirl universe.

So basically the Guardian was DC's equivalent of Captain America, all the way down to using an indestructible shield to fight crime.

Supergirl has done alot of corny things, but this is the first thing that's made me groan. Jimmy doesn't have to be Guardian imo. They already prepped Diggle as a pseudo Guardian.

If Jimmy was going to dip his toe into superheroism then I would have been happy if he had an episode where he meets John Henry Irons and tries out a prototype Steel suit. Then rolls back to his normal everyman duties.

I can't see this been anything but awful, they should have written him out.

Totally agree.. I don't think I'm saying anything new in that I think James is the weakest part of the show.

Mehcad Brooks is just so miscast as Jimmy Olson, he's a good actor and would have been PERFECT as John Henry Irons its a shame their wasting both him as an actor and Jimmy as a character

You know what I agree he would have been a good John Henry Irons. Given the CW likes to cast younger looking actors in roles too he'd certainly have fit that mold. Damn if only they had a time machine.

I agree. I think he the weakest character on the Show. I think they are just struggling to make him fit on the show. I don't want them to follow the same format as Arrow and Flash there several other sidekicks in the show.

I think they should just write him our have him return back to the daily planet.

If they reset the Universe with Flashpoint, here's their chance, make him John Henry Irons not James Olsen.

Agreed and that's one of my worries, they seem to be having teams on every show. We need some variety.

:funny:

I really like the costume - it's not a great Guardian costume but it is a nice costume nonetheless - but must agree with the miscast comments. I really dislike Olsen in this show, and it's a complete waste of Brooks too. Shame.

That wouldn't make much sense, as nothing about this costume looks or feels like DEO tech. I mean, we've seen a season worth of DEO action, and none of their tech has really trended this way.

Huh, I hadn't previously considered this. But yeah, that could totally have worked. Pity season 1 was so averse to non-alien heroes.

"My name is Jimmy Olsen. When I was a young boy, I idolized the world's greatest hero: Superman. But now that I'm grown up and taller than him I decided to relocate to National City. There, I realized that the only way that I'll ever make a difference in life and guard the people that I love in a world filled with super villains and aliens, that I need to become someone else. I need to become, something else..."

The original Guardian was Jim Harper, a police officer in Metropolis. He's also the grandfather of Roy Harper, aka Arsenal/Red Arrow. Wonder if they could incorporate Roy into the episode somehow. Looking for something from his grandfather's legacy in Metropolis, and this leads to Jimmy becoming Guardian.

ok back on the james thing

I hope this thing with Jimmy being the Guardian opens the doors for Jim Harper to assume the mantle.

the problem is they made jim Harper into alien race bigot racist and it's the bsad story of when a current day writer do that to a once cool character& that character is doomed after the turned them into an A -hole or worse.

It seem's most of the people that work for Bartilanti have some weird hate on for the Harper's who's one of the coolest hero family's in the DCu and let other race's into their family's, it's weird .

oh and as much as I like the actor from the ware house 13 show and his other acting jobs, he's not good as Jim Harper. every thing else yes . just not jim harper. not the right fit at all and the show runner's don't care. so it's a lots cause . the ship's sadly sailed.

I don't know about James kara's man becoming guardian. I guess they really wanted use the one was james harper son's genetic offspring that took over, that's more like captain America .

But that has super human enhanced strength who happen to be bi racial /black. . it's not like they didn't have black and mix raced people in the Harper family. they had bi racial in it roy's who's part native American him self to his kid who has asian in her .

but it seem's the only people allowed to have that are the diggel's in the arrow verse show's and dc live tv as whole . next to Barry if and when he ever end's up with iris as far as the show are concerned .

anyway I'll wait and see how this turns out.

Should just called him John Henry Jr. Not JIMMY OLSEN!!! Jimmy isn't suppose to be taller than Superman, Jimmy isn't a cool dude. C'mon people...
hmmm every time I see this I get reminded of both the jimmy of lois and clark and then small ville version that was played by one of the ash more twin brothers Aron ashmore both of which weren't geeky or overly nerdy and have played roles of overly cool guy's don't fit the category ether and they still played jimmy fine . he was over nerdy or geeky or but he was normal guy even if they looked cooler then what what he was supposed to be.

all this said

I don't get why the show runners and alot of writers these have weird thing of late where take some name that be long's to another character and they sabotoge the one that was supposed be that character for it. they make the hated in both book& shows of late and place the cool code name on another character that they seem to not know what to give them something to do to make them more exciting.

I don't get why they screwed over Jim Harper in such way to make him a biggot of any sort , so he can't be the guardian and pass it on to his kid that happen to be mixed with white and black or any race).

anyway even with me saying this I will be giving this a chance to see what happen's but the guardian has always been the Dc's version captain america only with a cop's/ police mans back ground and his family was one of he coolest cause both heroes and had mixed race American family which represent what north America both the United states and Canada are and should be.

yes I find it weird but I'll give it chance. but don't the need for the sabotaging of characters to do this . that part has always baffled me with what happen with certain writers pen's of late in both the comic's and on the tv screen of late.

I agree with other above to an extent, that they should of made Mehcad Brooks steel.

But I don't mind him as james . the issue here is the writer's show not knowing what to do with him and always resorting stealing another characters origin when all they have do is take what was done with jimmy Olson and make it contemporary and cool.

he's the DCU version of Rick Jones the hulks buddy, that went through the same phase where he was sorta seen as side kick (Even though marvel doesn't do that) and went through many hero identity's him self befor he got a good one to settle down on him self.

I doubt it, given they've already used Jim Harper, and in a direly incompatible role.

I watched a few episodes last year and honestly Jimmy Olsen was what put me off watching the whole thing. Or more or less his storyline and lack of chemistry with Kara. There were more sparks in one scene with Grant Gustin than there was all the episodes I watched last year.

It seems to be better right now, but he's been used very very sparingly and they've put that melodrama to bed for now. She has a lot of chemistry with many of the others on the show, so it seems a bit of a waste to bullishly stick with this one - kinda like how they ducked out of Oliver/Laurel on Arrow because it wasn't working.

Nothing against the actor - I just don't think he's been cast very well.
