Mel Gibson has committed to star in Edge of Darkness, marking his first starring role in a feature film since he headlined Signs and We Were Soldiers in 2002, says Variety.

Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) will direct the feature adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries, which Campbell also helmed.

William Monahan wrote the script, and Graham King is producing through his GK Films. Michael Wearing, who produced the original, will also produce, and the BBC will be involved in a producing capacity.

King is self-financing the project and is committed to an August production start in Boston. It is unclear whether he will fully finance through production or enlist a studio.

Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers systemic corruption that led to his daughter's death.

Gibson directed 2004's The Passion of The Christ and 2006's Apocalypto.

William Monahan is a Screenwriting God. Likewise, Mel Gibson is an acting God.

I didn't expect Gibson to act so soon.

Gibson, Monohan, and Campbell. Hey, I'm there.

I like Mel Gibson a lot, but I wish I could see him doing a different type of role. He always plays the tough guy..

Gibson, i miss this guy, he's such a great actor IMO

I love Apocalypto. It's such great work by Gibson. If only he could divide his work between acting and directing. :csad:

I love that movie but Braveheart is better IMO, i wish he would direct more of his movies, the guy has talent, no doubt.

Good to see Gibson in a film again. It's been a while.

Raging Bull vs. Mad Max
De Niro joins Gibson in Edge of Darkness.
by Jim Vejvoda

US, July 31, 2008 - Robert De Niro will reportedly co-star opposite Mel Gibson in the Martin Campbell-directed thriller Edge of Darkness, which is a remake of the 1985 BBC miniseries also helmed by Campbell.

According to The Boston Herald, De Niro "is this close to signing on" for the film, which will shoot in Massachusetts from August through December.

The paper did not specify what role De Niro would play, but given De Niro's interest in the CIA (he directed and co-starred in The Good Shepherd) it seems plausible that he might play the CIA agent role portrayed in the original by Joe Don Baker.

The script, penned by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed), follows a Boston cop (Gibson) investigating the murder of his activist daughter (to be played by Serbian-born Aussie actress Bojana Novakovic).

This is shaping up to be a great cast.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic have joined the Mel Gibson thriller Edge of Darkness, says The Hollywood Reporter. Martin Campbell is directing the movie, which is being produced by Graham King and Michael Wearing.

The film centers on a veteran cop (Gibson) whose only grown-up child (Novakovic) is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop unearths his daughter's secret life and discovers a world of corporate cover-ups and government collusion. Huston takes on the role of a shady businessman while Roberts will play the role of the daughter's distraught boyfriend.

Robert De Niro is also in the film, cast as a CIA cleaner.

Filming is due to start later this month on location in Massachusetts. William Monahan and Andrew Bovell wrote the screenplay.

I'm very excited. William Monahan writing and Mel Gibson starring.

No Edge of Darkness for De Niro
Source: Variety
September 4, 2008

Robert De Niro has exited Edge of Darkness, the Martin Campbell-directed drama that Graham King's GK Films began shooting in Massachusetts on Aug. 18.
De Niro just arrived on the set this week.

"Sometimes things don't work out, it's called creative differences," a spokesman for the actor told Variety.

De Niro had signed to play an operative sent to clean up the evidence in the murder of a young woman. Mel Gibson stars as the victim's father, a homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. who uncovers her secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic also star.

The filmmakers plan to shoot around De Niro's character's scenes until they cast an actor to replace him.

Wow, no De Niro.

Wonder who'll replace him - Johnny Depp? :D

I would have loved to have seen De Niro and Gibson act alongside one another. :(

Though, I'm still excited and looking forward to who they choose to replace him.

WooHoo more Boston movies. Not to sound like an ass but I'll probably see a movie just for that. Although a lot of movies that do take place their have really great storied anyway.

Now if only someone can do a good Boston accent. The best yet is probably Bacon and Fishburne in Mystic River.

They should get Harvey Keitel for De Niro's replacement.

That's a real bummer to hear. This has quality written all over it an De Niro walks? It seems very unproffesional to do that even if you're one of the greatest actors alive.

But having said that if the rift between the director and star was that big then maybe it was best for them to part ways.:o

De Niro had actually already filmed a scene before he exited.

Robert De Niro in Lynn yesterday.

Hollywood heavyweight Robert De Niro hit the 15th hole at the Gannon Golf Club in Lynn yesterday to shoot scenes for the Mel Gibson flick “Edge of Darkness.”

De Niro, who plays a CIA operative in the emotional thriller, spent the day trying to get out of a sand trap while the cameras rolled.

We hear that the director, Martin Campbell, of “Casino Royale” fame, was unable to fit the actor, the sand trap and the Boston skyline in his shot so the groundskeeping crew at Gannon spent the last week excavating the pit for the flick.

“They actually ended up liking the way it turned out, so they’re going to keep it,” said Someone Who Knows.

Gannon is open to the public today - but only holes 1 through 9: Bobby D. and the rest of the “Edge” crew have the back nine.

I'm not certain yet if the content of this film will be exciting (I'm such a trailer ****e :o Need to see one first!), but I'm a huge Gibson fan. Glad to see him starring in a film again!

Glad to see Gibson acting again as well, looking forward to this one.
