According to this article, we might all be living in one big cosmic hologram, and that what we're doing now is actually something that is happening in a distant universe somewheres. How miind boggling is that?

The idea that we live in a hologram probably sounds absurd, but it is a natural extension of our best understanding of black holes, and something with a pretty firm theoretical footing. It has also been surprisingly helpful for physicists wrestling with theories of how the universe works at its most fundamental level.
The holograms you find on credit cards and banknotes are etched on two-dimensional plastic films. When light bounces off them, it recreates the appearance of a 3D image. In the 1990s physicists Leonard Susskind and Nobel prizewinner Gerard 't Hooft suggested that the same principle might apply to the universe as a whole. Our everyday experience might itself be a holographic projection of physical processes that take place on a distant, 2D surface.

I wonder how this fits in with religion etc.

How does it refute religion? So I am a 3-D image of something 2-D? How do thought processes fit into this little theory? Interesting theory.

but isn't the fact we can't interact with our surroundings prove we can't be a holographic projection?

you can project a hologram but you can't interact with it if i'm not mistaken.

how does a holographic universe work?
does that mean that we're all puppets in the hand of some alien playing? Or does all it means is that 3-d things are all a MASS OPTICAL ILLUSION?

The Matrix has experienced a glitch. Please remain calm as we correct this problem by killing those people. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

The Matrix has experienced a glitch. .
thats what i was thinking.
maybe the Matrix is true. and it was Neos true plan to inform people, but in a way that the agents will let thru.

so people just follow the white rabbit and.....
wait! who are you? Agent smith? you want to talk to me? wait! whats that Metal insect!?? what are you doing!!??/ STOP! STOP!!! AHHH!

HAHA why would you take the time to type "STOP STOP AHHHH" if you were being attacked:hehe::woot: Makes me think of Monty Python and the Holy Grail were the guy carved "AGGHHHHHH" and they debated over what it meant.:woot:

This makes no sense at all. If we are nothing more than some form of "Next Gen Second Life", then why do I still have to pay freaking Taxes???!??!?

nobody said Next Gen Second Life was fair....

If life is an illusion, and reality only a dream, then in which form of reality is someone dreaming?

There aren't enough "huh?'s to convey how much that article confused me.

This is why I love physicists. They're so imaginative. It's great. What's even better is that this could totally be the way it is, and virtually everybody here has merely scoffed at the idea.

I'll be the first to say that this type of concept is way beyond my understanding, but I'm also not arrogant enough to dismiss it as nonsense. The fact that I can't wrap my head around it doesn't make it ridiculous.

Then again, that seems to be the general attitude when somebody doesn't understand the science behind a given phenomenon. Evolution, for instance. Meh.

If anyone can provide evidence for it, I'll listen. Until then, it's simply an interesting idea.

i think we're misunderstanding the article. it doesnt mean "reality only a dream". acording to wiki:
The holographic principle states that the entropy of ordinary mass (not just black holes) is also proportional to surface area and not volume; that volume itself is illusory and the universe is really a hologram which is isomorphic to the information "inscribed" on the surface of its boundary [6].
in other words there are only 2 dimension (lengnth and width) but hieght is an illusion.

Wouldn't multiple light sources interfere with this theory?

True dat.
