yeah I remember Cruise saying that Mann does all the homework about the character that he(Cruise) should be doing. He showed Cruise pictures of where Vincent grew up, real detailed back story!

August 30, 2005 - In their coverage of how Hurricane Katrina has impacted film production in the Gulf Coast region, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with writer-director Michael Mann about what impact the storm had on his current production, Miami Vice.

Vice shut down last Thursday and Friday when Hurricane Katrina stormed Florida; filming resumed Monday. THR says the Vice production "encountered minor damage on one set where trees fell on a trailer park. Mann noted that the production had time to prepare and decided to shut down Thursday because city services were redirected elsewhere and 'we wanted to be sure our Florida crew could get home and take care of their families.'"

Mann has had to leave his house in Miami for a hotel where he has reportedly "kept himself busy rewriting and prepping for the remainder of the shoot, which continues for four more weeks in Miami before moving to the Dominican Republic."

In other Miami Vice news, stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx didn't let the hurricane keep them from attending parties for this past weekend's MTV Video Music Awards. USA Today caught up with Farrell there where he said of Foxx, "He's great to be around. The man has incredible heart."

Of the Vice shoot, Farrell said, "The greatest part about the movie is wrapping every day. ... Everyone's working hard. I think we have another four weeks in Miami."

Thanks for the update! Sounds like a tough shoot! Im glad there wasn't that much destruction on set!

I heard Jamie Foxx performed with Kanye West at the VMA's, but sadly I missed it! :(

    Miami Vice Chatter
Plus, a Deadwood star joins the cast.
    by Stax

September 13, 2005 - Actor Barry Shabaka Henley, who plays Lt. Martin Castillo in Michael Mann's upcoming Miami Vice movie, spoke with The National Ledger about his grueling schedule juggling the filming Vice and the Showtime series Barbershop. "I'll be working back on Miami Vice till the end of September," Henley advised the paper.

According to the actor, who also appeared in Mann's Collateral and Ali, the Miami Vice movie is "delving into the psychology of undercover work that they weren't able to do in the series – what it does to a human being to be deep cover for a long time."

In related news, The IMDB lists Deadwood actor John Hawkes (he plays "Sol Starr") as being part of the Vice cast. According to the site, Hawkes plays "Alonzo." In the script that I read, Alonzo is an ex-informant for Crockett and Tubbs. It is a small but important role.

Hawkes' credits include The Perfect Storm and Identity.

Luis Tosar is one of the most amazing actors Spain has... on par with Bardem. And he's perfect for a villain roles... he plays a creepy psycho wife beater in "Take My Eyes", a wonderful indy film.

    This is the guy:

    Sonny Crockett Wears Socks
    New Miami Vice set pics!
    by Stax

September 20, 2005 - The Colin Farrell Fansite has posted the latest batch of spy photos from the Florida set of the big-screen version of Miami Vice. The pics show Colin Farrell dressed up as undercover detective Sonny Crockett.

Unlike his TV predecessor portrayed by Don Johnson, Farrell's Crockett wears long sleeve shirts, a belt and leather shoes with socks!

He still has the long, greasy blondish hair of Johnson's Crockett and, in addition to the character's infamous five o'clock shadow, Farrell also sports an ugly moustache.

The set pics also show Gong Li as Crockett's love interest Isabella, who is part of the villain's narcotics organization that Crockett infiltrates.

In other Miami Vice news, The Boston Herald chatted with actor Justin Theroux who co-stars as Det. Larry Zito. "It's Colin Farrell, fast boats, fast cars, fast women," Theroux informed the paper.

"It's not comedy, it's not ironic. It's a pretty much straight-up Vice story. I'm the ugly cousin to Crockett and Tubbs, a Vice guy backup to them. Sometimes we operate as a team."

"We're shooting, and these boats – I'm not kidding – will do 170 (miles per hour), and we're racing them at night with a camera crew across choppy seas in pitch black. It's for real. We've had no major close calls, but moments," Theroux revealed, adding, "It's insane. It's the clarity of vision that they insist you use everything at their disposal that money can buy. ... I've done guns before, but this is one of those movies and, quite frankly, one of those budgets where there's no skimping. You go to the firing range: nine SWAT guys and an M-176 and 9mm Luger – everything is laid out! You sit there and do grenades if you want. It's like little boy camp. Maybe they'll get me a little boat?"

Miami Vice opens July 28, 2006.

    Publicists, Guns & Money
Rumors about the making of Miami Vice.
    by Stax
September 27, 2005 - Rumors about ego battles and trouble on the set of Miami Vice have resurfaced thanks to Radar Magazine. Fox 411 columnist Roger Friedman first reported that Oscar winner Jamie Foxx was acting like a prima donna on the set, creating a rift between himself and writer-director Michael Mann.

"Cabin fever has settled in on the set, leading the two professionals to frequently butt heads," Radar claims. Foxx and Mann have collaborated twice before (on Ali and Collateral, for which Foxx received an Oscar nomination) and are, according to Radar, slated to team again on a project called Damage Control.

Radar, citing "top studio execs," claims Foxx "was miffed from day one that he had signed on to the film before collecting his statue for Ray and felt his contract didn't reflect his new superstar worth." Universal ultimately matched Foxx's salary with that of his co-star Colin Farrell but trouble remained.

Foxx "frequently retreats to his trailer when he's off-camera and has been late several times for the cast's mandatory weapons training sessions."

Mann's publicist, Pat Kingsley, denied the reports, telling Radar that Foxx and Mann are "like brothers." Foxx's flack, Alan Nierob, spun matters a little differently, saying, "These guys are fierce competitors for success. Nonetheless they love each other, are friends, and are partners on future projects after Miami Vice."

Foxx has reportedly had to endure at least one intolerable incident on the Vice set. The film's publicists have confirmed that Foxx's stand-in was the victim of a racist prank (it apparently involved lynching) pulled by some crew members. An infuriated Foxx demanded that the crew members be fired.

Radar also adds that Farrell hasn't helped Vice much with his own vices. Mann was reportedly forced to delay shooting once until Farrell could "dry out."

Before shooting commenced, Mann joked that, given his stars' wild reputations, he was "going to need a line item for a bail bondsman." At least he planned ahead.

    Miami Vice Trailer Buzz
    Promo campaign will begin with...
    by Stax

November 7, 2005 - Universal Pictures has confirmed for IGN FilmForce that the marketing campaign for the big-screen version of Miami Vice is slated to begin next month with the studio's release of King Kong.

Peter Jackson's little ape movie opens Dec. 14 and Vice fans can expect to see the first teaser trailer for the film attached to prints of Kong.

No word yet on the content or length of the trailer.

The Miami marketing push also will include the release of the first official stills from the movie. So far the only photos fans have seen are spy pics from the Miami and Latin American sets, which brings us to ...

The Colin Farrell Fansite has posted some high-quality spy pics from Vice's stint of filming in the Dominican Republic. The shots show Colin Farrell as Sonny Crockett opposite Gong Li as his love interest Isabella, who is involved with the drug operation Crockett and his undercover partner Rico Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) are investigating.

Miami Vice opens July 28, 2006.
