Fant4stic Michael B Jordan is "Flame On!" The Human Torch - Part 2

How about the clip where Ben asks them about the coming trip and Johnny is screwing with his chair. Domashev is just acting like one of the guys?

He nodded his head to a question.

Victor isn't a mute. His personality is abrasive.

For all we know, the reason he ask them if they're ready is cause Reed and Victor are arguing about the experiment before that.

My point is that the few moments with him before he becomes hooded metal face show him to be more involved with the others than the comics have ever portrayed the character.

Instead of being standoffish, he's their pal.

There's no problem with people liking that, I am just pointing out that those traits are not in line with anything from the comic books and that doesn't sit right with me.
If they show him being at least somewhat annoyed with Johnny and Ben early on, it will at least give it the appearance they actually were inspired by the comics.

So wait a minute. Is that guy with the beard Domashev? I didn't even catch that. I thought he was just some other guy who worked there.

He didn't have much of an accent did he?

Crap. I was hoping he would have enough of a personality that it would be more noticeable, but I didn't even notice him myself.

Thats Toby Kebbell. I have a feeling we will see more of him in the next trailer.

Yeah, I went back and watched again and it's clearly him, but it didn't click when I saw it before that it was even him. I don't have speakers on my work computer, so I'll have to wait until I get home to hear the voice he uses.

Yep, that's how bad they messed up his character in the film. He's also getting drunk with MBJ before the space jump which leads Ben to ask "are you guys in shape to go on this mission?"

I didn't think they could do worse than the last two iterations of Doom, but they somehow managed it. At least McMahon's personality made Doom menacing. There's nothing menacing here.

Yeah, while I wasn't a fan of McMahon, at least he had an arrogant, threatening attitude from the opening scene. I would have at least liked to see Domeshev get pissed off at something, say something that showed he felt himself above the others etc. now that I've realized he was actually in the trailer.

We have seen like ten seconds of footage for Doom....we know little about his personality and intentions.

This is like saying how the film is joyless and no one will crack a smile and then trailer 2 came.

You're right, but for all intents and purposes, the trailer presents him as one of the guys before the accident, and afterwards he will be the menacing antagonist.

That at least gives me the impression that Trank/Kinberg feel that the accident is what causes the attitude shift in Domashev. If that's the case, it doesn't follow either 616 or UFF because in those areas, the attitude was always there.

Didnt he just give Johnny a shady comment that Johnny doesnt take orders well? And Johnny's reaction to him wasnt really nice.

Yeah... like you've never busted on your friends.

I'm sure there will be more development, but those short clips don't give me the impression that they outright can't stand each other.

Exactly, in UFF, they even go back further with it, showing how his family heritage goes all the way back to Vlad the Impailer (aka Count Dracula), and he's forced to memorize his lineage as a little boy.

Yeah, most elements of this are very different from UFF which leaves me scratching my head when people seem to think it's faithful to it. It is very roughly based on UFF, but the story and characters seem very different. For example:

1. Doom has a different name and the character seems very different and the 'post-transformation' Doom isn't recognizable. And from what we know or has been rumored or we can infer from the trailer, Doom's story isn't close to what we saw in UFF.

2. There is no Arthur Molekevic who was a key character in UFF and the FF's origin. We have a Harvey Elder (616 Moleman), but his character seems completely different from either the UFF or 616 character.

3. In UFF they didn't have missions into the N-Zone tied into their origin. Their first large scale experiment blew up and resulted in their powers.

4. In UFF, Reed joined the Baxter Institute as a child. Here we see him apparently as an adult wide-eyed as he sees the Baxter institute for the first time.

5. There weren't any 'containment suits' in UFF.

etc. etc. etc. This film may be closer to UFF than 616, but it certainly isn't very faithful to UFF.

In that trailer they showed Doom is apart of the team. Like everyone should get from watching a guy like Kobe Bryant over the years. Being part of the team doesn't make you one of the guys. There are teamates that don't embrace the family aspect of being part of a team.

Nor does Victor appear to be an anti-social computer hacker/blogger living in his mother's basement. He looks like a co-worker at the Baxter building, who has little respect for Johnny's work ethic.

I thought the same exact thing until someone specifically pointed out that that was Domashev...lol

The term "based on" doesn't mean "100% faithful to". There are enough elements in this new movie that are inspired by things from Ultimate Fantastic Four that the film can completely accurately be described as being based on that iteration of the characters.

 it doesn't seem like the blogger stuff is a big part of the character and I think he will be more menacing than we have been led to believe.

Also, some posters here are really contradicting themselves with their comments. Some are moaning that this is based more on UFF as they don't like that version of the characters, and then some of the same people are now saying Doom is not close to his UFF counterpart as a slight against the movie. This movie can't catch a break it seems.

The UFF comparison ---
Reed -- young man joins Baxter Institute as some kind of wunderkind and brings dimensional travel to the world. Gets Stretchy powers. Likes Sue.
Franklin - Runs Baxter Institute, has 2 kids there, Johnny and Sue (stepkid, but otherwise matches)
Sue - young woman Science member of the institute, gets Invisible and force fields. Flirts with Reed.
Johnny - young man not necessarily science motivated but at the institute. Flames on.
Ben - young man Reed's childhood friend who was present during Reed's garage experiments. Ends up as orange rock monster
Domashev is a member of the initial experiment that gives the FF their powers, and he gains powers from it -- with metal skin and hooded cape.

Beyond that, it's Trank/Kinberg winging it.

Well in fairness, all the stuff you listed is pretty much what we have seen in the trailers.

@Joe Rockhead: See what I said above about what the phrase "based on" means re: the clear UFF inspiration for this movie.

@DigificWriter - gee... I really didn't understand that the first time you said that.

And the major complaint is that they used UFF for the inspiration, not 616 universe.

Compare over 700 616 universe Fantastic Four and associated comics (annuals, FF, F4, Fantastic Force, etc), plus tv, radio and merchandise to the 60 issues plus assorted appearances in the Ultimate Universe. Tell me which one was more successful and has greater appeal.

^ Which comics iteration of the characters was 'more successful' doesn't matter. All that matters is the creative intent of the individuals producing this film.

You know you can hit the quote button right? :cwink:

Isn't the inspiration for the film the crux of the arguments here though?

Longtime FF fans are interested in seeing the 616 version of the FF, especially those first 100 or so issues from Jack Kirby. The Tim Story movies gave us a lackluster version of that, with the exception of the changes to Doom, which was inspired in part by UFF. People were dissatisfied but I think more with the execution than with inspirations.

So now this movie comes along and says -- 'those movies didn't work, therefore it must be the source material, let's use UFF as the inspiration'.

While there is also a shift in tone introduced, some of the things from UFF just don't ring true with longtime fans expectations. So already dissatisfied fans become even more disgruntled.

Let's add in the little hints about the film that the studio has sprinkled out over the last 8-10 months. Not enough to satisfy those really interested in the film, and the few things released have also underwhelmed to the point of disdain.

This is where we stand now.

I plan on seeing this movie in the theater. Just because there are things I don't like from all that I've seen, I am still interested in a Fantastic Four movie that I can say captures the essence of the characters I've enjoyed since I was a kid. Maybe this will surprise me.
