TMZ.com has learned that Michael Bay will produce (and possibly direct) an adaptation of sci-fi author Whitley Strieber's upcoming novel, 2012: The War for Souls, at Warner Bros. Pictures.

According to some folk traditions, 2012 is suppossedly to be a year of either great spiritual transformation -- or apocalypse. The Mayan calendar held that it would be a time when the existing world order would be reversed. Nostradamus forecasted that a rather large comet would rudely arrive on Earth's doorstep no later than 2012. The Roman Catholic Saint Malachy predicted that in 2012, the last Pope would arrive, triggering Judgment Day.

The site says that DreamWorks-based producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (upcoming Transformers and Star Trek) of Kurtzman/Orci are producing and may write the script as well.

when 2012 comes and goes, this movie will feel so dated and odd... just like 2001

but still i cant wait! they should make more Whitley Strieber book movies. he has a lot of creepy books about him being abducted by aliens (communion)

on one hand...i wanna see this movie because it's Michael Bay and it's on a topic that i just got interested in a couple of months ago...

...on the other hand, i'm not sure how deep this movie could be since Michael Bay is doing it. i'm kinda into spirituality and i don't really take Michael Bay to be a spiritual person.

I can't find much on the book, the author doesn't have a website like most do.
I am certainly interested in how this pans out.

Thanks:up:

Pretty interesting stuff,i am still trying to find how Strieber has turned it into an adventure story.

No problem, that's all I could find.
I agree...Im definately interested.

Geeze.

When did Micheal Bay decide he was sci-fi director?

Go back to directing buddy cop movies you hack.

Go back to directing buddy cop movies you hack.

Bay might make shallow movies but he's far from a hack...

...Paul W. Anderson, Uwe Boll....those guys are hacks. at least Bay's action scenes are exciting. i can't say the same for the 2 others i mentioned.

Looks like he's directing it. Started another thread about it cause I didn't know this was here. :)

'Transformers' trio to reteam

By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Michael Bay is looking to the future.

Director is attached to reteam with writing-producing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on sci-fi project "2012," based on bestselling author Whitley Strieber's upcoming tome of the same name, for Warner Bros.
Story follows an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to stop an apocalypse foreseen by the ancient Mayans.
Kurtzman and Orci, who penned Bay's upcoming DreamWorks tentpole "Transformers" and brought the director aboard "2012," will produce.
Warners nailed down the film rights to Strieber's book on Friday and continues negotiations with Orci, Kurtzman and Bay.
Bay is in post with "Transformers." He was last in theaters with "The Island."
Kurtzman and Orci are the writers on J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" for Paramount. Pic is set to begin lensing this fall, resurrecting the lucrative franchise.
Strieber has several projects set up at other studios, including Sony's adaptation of his "The Grays," which Cary Brokaw is producing and scribe Ken Nolan adapting. His tome "The Day After Tomorrow" was the inspiration for Fox's film of the same name. Bay is repped by William Morris Agency, while Kurtzman and Orci are repped by Creative Artists Agency. Innovative Artists Agency reps Strieber.

Here's kind of what it's about from one angle. Mix this in with time travel and sci fi to prevent this from happening and you get the picture: Terminator meets DaVinci Code meets 7th Sign meets Day after Tomorrow.

I guess the guy is thought to be a nut by some people. LOL It seem sthe book is NOT out yet. Nope not out yet. However he's some more info from IGN:

According to the site's info, the year 2012 is a pivotal one for the great planet Earth, "supposedly … a year of either great spiritual transformation -- or apocalypse." The Mayans believed that year would see the "world order" reversed, good old Nostradamus predicted a comet's collision with the planet, and the Catholic Saint Malachy believed that the last Pope would arrive in 2012, setting off Judgment Day (but with no mention of Terminators, alas). Also, aliens might show up.

Less cheeky is a claim by some scientists that a polar reversal could take place that year, a potentially globe-altering event if ever there was one. TMZ is also reporting that DreamWorks-based producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (also the writers behind the new Star Trek film) are on the project as producers as well, and may also script the film.

^^^^^Good looking out

I just wanna know how Bay is gonna fit a car chase into this:woot:

Bay Intends to Direct 2012
Transformers team reunites.
by IGN Staff

US, March 19, 2007 - As IGN reported on Friday, director Michael Bay and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are teaming up to produce an adaptation of author Whitley Strieber's upcoming novel 2012: The War for Souls for Warner Bros. And now comes word that Bay does indeed intend to direct the film.

The Hollywood Reporter, in a story running today, says, "Talks are in the preliminary stages, but it is known that Bay intends to direct, while Orci and Kurtzman will produce via their company Kurtzman/Orci." The report also mentions that a search is in progress for a writer for the project, indicating that Kurtzman and Orci (scripters themselves) will not pen the film.

2012 is about an academic researcher who learns that multi-dimensional versions of Earth exist. But there's not much time to celebrate this discovery when it is also determined that all of these Earths are in danger of being destroyed in an apocalypse that was prophesied by the ancient Mayans. He decides to team with his duplicate from an alternate Earth in an attempt to work together to put an end to the prophecy.

Bay and Orci and Kurtzman have teamed previously on The Island as well as this summer's Transformers.

Glad to hear Bay is gonna direct and not just produce

Ugh. Can we please ban Bay from the planet? Strieber is awesome and Bay will just f**k up his story. If you REALLY want to have your sh1t freaked out, read "Communion" and then watch the film with Christopher Walken.

jag

lol... we are f**ked

i like Bay but i don't think he's the right guy for this job. i'm hoping he takes Prince of Persia over this. i'd rather see someone like Aronofsky or David Fincher direct this one.

The problem here is that Strieber's works are usually rather cerebral and Bay is...not... :o

Aronofsky makes things weird rather than cerebral IMO,i'd say Proyas is well suited to this
