Micrco soft stated once, that what they most fear wasn't from Valve entering the console market but from Apple. And it's finally happened with the latter company's Apple TV.

Apple's security and content restrictions would drive away a lot of game studios. And knowing Apple their hardware and software will be so different from Sony and Microsoft's standard PC hardware that no game developer will want to work with them. They had to put up with that kind of **** when Sony was using the complicated cell processor and they didnt like it. I doubt they want to go back to that sort of frustration.

But Im sure Apple's game console will be the shiniest sexiest most aggravating over priced game console on the market. So at least it will have that going for it.

Kinda spluh that Microsoft didn't fear Valve since Steam was getting more people into PC gaming and Windows -a Microsoft product- is still very prominent in that market, so of course Apple is their main concern since they build both a competing OS and hardware.

Plus, I'm pretty sure you can do the same with Google's Nexus Player. There's even an ASUS controller you can purchase for it. So I'm not sure how game changing this will be.

We definitely don't need another big conglomerate in the gaming industry that's for sure. I miss the days where it was controlled mostly by game centric companies like Atari, Nintendo, and Sega. :(

From what I'm reading, it seems this will mostly play mobile games with a handful of exclusive titles that will still be mobile focused in nature. It doesn't really seem like its competing with what MS and Sony are doing. Maybe with Nintendo, if Nintendo is going to be focusing more on casual gaming again, but we don't know that yet.

WTH to the title?

Apparently, MS's nightmare was Apple entering the gaming market? I really have no idea, first I every heard of that.

Microsoft: Valve isn't a threat to consoles; everyone is wary of Apple

Microsoft doesn't view Valve as a competitor in the console universe, Microsoft President of Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick said during Microsoft's TechForum. Valve is "doing some innovative stuff," Mattrick says, but when it comes to direct competition, "no."

"The scale of products and things that are being brought to market are probably a little bit richer when I look at Sony, Nintendo, Apple and Google," Mattrick says.

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently noted that Apple is the Steam Box's biggest threat, since it already controls such a large portion of the market with the App Store. Nat Brown, the man who gave the original Xbox its name and former Microsoft leader, also sees Apple's potential to own the console game.

"Apple, if it chooses to do so, will simply kill PlayStation, Wii U and Xbox by introducing an open 30 percent-cut app/game ecosystem for Apple TV," Brown writes.

Valve's foray into the console space includes an emphasis on cheap, in-home streaming systems and Linux. Valve's PC distribution client, Steam, launched its Linux service in February and during that month it claimed 2.02 percent of all Steam users. By comparison, Mac users accounted for 3.07 percent in February.

Xbox's Marc Whitten 'not sweating' Steam Machines

(1 day ago) 133

Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten isn't worried about Steam Machines taking up precious Xbox real estate in the living room. During an interview with Engadget at CES, Whitten said he's "not sweating" Valve's new initiative. He thinks "there's space for both."

Whitten admitted, "I personally don't know how to think about Steam Machines yet," which is becoming an increasingly more popular sentiment. "I'm not knocking it or whatever. I continue to think that PC gaming – the sort of uber configuration and I can change everything and I can mod – that's an important thing and there's a lot of people that wanna do that."

Whitten elaborated when a product is in the living room, however, players want to be instantly entertained – they don't want to spend time doing anything else. "When you get into that living room environment, you don't want to spend any of your brain cells doing anything but being entertained. I don't want to work on it; I don't want to feel like I have to know how it works. I would like to be blowing things up now, or watching a thing now. That's the fundamental thing that you want to do."

A total of 13 Steam Machines, from various manufacturers, have been revealed so far. The cheapest machines come in at $500, while the more expensive configurations can top out at $6,000. Each Steam Machine ships with SteamOS and Valve's new Steam Controller.

I suppose during the heyday of the Wii, this might raise an eyebrow at Nintendo. But in 2015?

Is anyone who's likely to buy an Xbox One really not going to get one because their overpriced Netflix box can play iOS games?

I'm sure this thing will sell alright. But when it comes to actually encroaching on console territory, I'd say this thing is about as threatening as the Ouya.

yeah the first thing I thought was that it was Wii-lite but even less dedicated to gaming than that. Its really not competition for anyone and definitely not MS

You're reaching. Quoting Mattrick and Brown...two people who are no longer at MS for stuff they said years ago? The first who shouldnt even be taken seriously

yeah I'm reaching even though place's like game informer and more said so after Mattrick left too way before Apple announced
this new feature with apple tv. the point is it was said by them, they represented Mirco soft when they were there and place's like game informer and joystiq which is part of Engadget these days and few others still refer to this at times depending on the reporters who remember it . what was said was a reference /segway. Not my fault if it was an event you missed.

Ok moving on here's an AOD and VOD pod cast

Are they going to have any retail games? If not I can't see how it can be much of a worry to Xbox/PS.

from what thy told both EPN.TV and Game infomer and Game trailers (before the latter shut Down ) they have Disney infinity and sky Landers on the list and few others.

Those could be popular. Until they take on the shooters and the RPGS etc I don't think it will be eating up much of the console space though.

like I said there are other's but they aren't fully named/ listed it'll also depending on the updates on games like Disney infinity which is having Battle ground's DLC put in this month. so we'll see.
