Multiple reports are coming in that a military coup is happening right now in Turkey as President Erdogan is out of the country on vacation. They've blocked bridges, seized airports, and all military and police units. Wonder how this will turn out.

I'm painfully ignorant of world affairs. Why do I see so many saying that we are dangerously close to World War 3?

Ohh next comes the calls for the final Crusade and European take back of "Constantinople"

Sounds like this is being carried out by some lower level military people as they've detained the top general of the Turkish armed forces and others who they think are loyal to Erdogan. From various reports and people with knowledge of Turkey, it seems many in the military got fed up with Erdogan and his reckless foreign policies.

Some sources say martial law is in effect.

Because people are stupid? We are a long chain of events away from something as big as WW3. There are factors that could def lead us down that path, though, if the Chinese Stock market bubble pops like most of those in the know are predicting, then Putin keeps testing how far he can push things and add in unrest in the middle east escalating to a much more severe level than it's at now THEN you have the recipe to say we are close to WW3.

Those things are well within the realm of possibility but there are so many other factors that could or could not come into play. The biggest being that, in general, folks don't like to go fight and die and most countries really will do what they can to avoid that.

A third world war would have little to no ground combat (outside of already troubled countries in Africa and the Middle-East), I'd imagine. I don't even know when the term world war would be applicable, because the world has changed so much since the last one.

I wasn't aware that the Chinese Stock Market was in danger of plummeting. How likely is that, and what are the potential effects on the US and our economy? I know that's off-topic, but I just began investing so I'd like to know how safe my money is.

The military has announced on state-run TV that they've seized control of the government, citing autocratic rule and increasing terrorism as the main reasons.

China's government has long propped up their stock market to keep the populace calm and the economy steady while others around them were struggling. Now that they're seeing they can't continue doing that, it's feared that China will finally have their recession that others already had. If that does happen, it could make the global economy a bit more unstable.

Erdogan is reduced to releasing a statement via FaceTime to respond to the coup. Seems many aren't even paying attention to him.

Is this part of some kind of internecine warfare between the Sunni and Shia?

More like a clash between those who favor a secular government versus those who want a more Islamist government.

Turkey is a real country. Syria is basically a fiefdom run by the Assad family. The Turkish military got fed up of Erdogan's heavy-handedness and decided to boot him out.

They've been planning this for months, and I think the recent ISIS attacks probably pushed the plan into motion.

Ugh I don't want to go to Turkey anymore. I am dreading it! Is it safe?

Can you go to Turkey right now? I mean, I guess if things stay quiet. The airports have been seized by the military, so they should be operating somewhat.

Erdogan has fled to Germany and is seeking asylum.

I was wondering where he would go.

I assume Erdogan must have some support. But if the military has taken all the major cities, he's **** out of luck.

I am going to Turkey at the end of the month in like a tourist part. So scary :( I hope the flights are cancelled and I get a refund but I don't think it will happen.

I think heard some gun fire around strategic building (National Intelligence Agency) that near to my home. Of course jets are flying all the time.

What a weird day. We'll see how serious the situation. President seems like doesn't know if head of the military chief is kidnapped or not. There are some rumors about it.

Ruth I'm sure that was a lot of money, but there are tanks opening fire outside of Turkish parliament right now. I mean, I would probably take a rain check.
