Anyone here in the U.S. Military? I'm thinking of joining the Air Force and I want to speak to someone that isn't a recruiter...

umm...the army?? I don't know the technical names for all that stuff, but i know it's not Marines, Navy or Air Force.

I'm in the Air Force. What would you like to know? I know there are a couple of other hypsters here that are also in that branch of the service.

My younger brother, a fellow hype member but more of a lurker than a poster, will be a Marine in 2 weeks. And yah that's all I wanted to say. :o

1.) After Basic Training, can you leave whenever you want or does this HAVE to be a lifetime commitment type thing?
2.) How much do privates make?
3.)Is it easy to climb the ranks for someone who tries hard?
4.) Are there any parts that you regret in the air force?
5.) Are the people as cocky and war mongering as the Marine and Army guys? (lots of those people, that I've spoken with act like war is necessary..)

My brother is in the Navy, my male best friend is in the Army, and my female best friend with whom I've sadly lost touch is in the Air Force.

Wow. I was wrong...Sorry Bamfer.

1. You can choose 4 or 6 year enlistments. Depending on your AFSC (job) you might get an initial enlistment bonus for enlisting for 6 years.

2. In the Air Force, we are all Airmen. E-1 makes about 1400 a month base pay and E-3 makes about 1650 base pay. After basic training and tech school, you'll be living in the dorms at your first duty station and will be eating at the dining facility on a meal card. Here is a link to download the military pay table for 2009 http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables/2009MilitaryPayTables.doc

3. Making rank is ALWAYS dependent on the person's willingness to try hard. In the Air Force, you test for your rank based upon your knowledge of your job and knowledge of the Air Force. Study hard enough for both and you get promoted.

4. Of course

5. Not nearly. Depending on your job, the Air Force is pretty much as close to the civilian sector as you can get, compared to the other military branches. That's just my opinion btw, other branches don't get offended, i'm not bashing. I'm just stating my viewpoints.

Sweet. The only problem is I have a girlfriend that I've been dating for 3 years. And I don't know how often I'll be able to come home or to call her. Aren't there only certain times when I'll be free?

And your website says that if I join, the buddy system says that I can't apply it to a male/female relationship it can only be hetero male friends. (Which I think is lame. and unfair, and bs...)

You should join with me, bro....

Oh and knowsbleed, do you get a 9mm Beretta?!

I'm a fat, one-legged, long haired pacifist, who doesn't believe in the war we're fighting in. I'll stick to supporting the military through taxes and working at AAFES, thank you.

I don't believe in this war either. In fact, I wish to be stationed FAR from it. But I've always liked planes AND the air force. The technology, weapons, outfits(clothing),outfits(stations/troops) and everything always wowed me.

Air force= win.

But after an accident that happened and with how my life sucks....I'm beginning to see no future. I've debated breaking up with her just to give her a better life with someone who matters. And leave it up to destiny---that's stupid.

I just want to grab control of this daily ********. It's so annoying being stuck here. And Japan was beautiful. I want to see the world. I felt adult for the first time in my life when I want to Japne it was so cool.

I just don't know what to do anymore. And I'll never commit suicide. I'm too in love with me....So what am I supposed to do?

The air force is all I have. And **** college....That **** is expensive for tnhothing I already know how to draw. I haven't learnt andyhing in the last 3 years there!!

Well, I learned how to drink more.

The Drakster is gonna get serious for a minute here, and break it down simple for ya. I admittedly don't know you that well, but that might be a good thing, since then the advice I have will come from an unbiased source.

But after an accident that happened and with how my life sucks....I'm beginning to see no future. I've debated breaking up with her just to give her a better life with someone who matters. And leave it up to destiny---that's stupid.

Lemme ask you this? Why does your life suck? What is so wrong with it? You've been here for going on four years now, and you have a couple thousand posts, so you've at least managed to not die in the last four years. Considering you have free time to post here, then you're apparently not starved, or homeless.

And it's kinda unfair that you're considering breaking up with her because you feel sorry for yourself. Isn't it her decision whether or not you're worth her time? Who are you to tell her otherwise?

I just want to grab control of this daily ********. It's so annoying being stuck here. And Japan was beautiful. I want to see the world. I felt adult for the first time in my life when I want to Japan it was so cool.

Dramatic instances aside, I can understand being lost in life: TRUST ME. I haven't truly felt like myself, the REAL me, the person I was meant to be in life, since I was in tenth grade. That was almost ten years ago. I went from wanting a career in music, to art, to business management, to web design. I'm 25, working a somewhat decent job in retail, with no college or career. Did I mention that this is the first job I've had in almost three years, since I had/have such a hard time getting any governmental assistance for a new prosthetic, which is actually older than Mr. Todd? Also, did I mention that I quit/got fired from my last job, pretty much for being the only one doing my job right?

To this day, I still don't entirely know what it's like to be an adult, and I"m almost 25. All I know is that bills have to be paid, and work has to be done. I do the job, I pay the bills, and I hope that I make friends along the way. I'm lucky and rolled high charisma at character gen, so I do tend to make friends easy, and happen to command a lot of respect and admiration. Neat? Yeah. But doesn't make me any closer to being an adult.

TLDR version: Being an adult is what you make of it. You're as young as you feel, but you're also as adult as you feel. If you're mature, and you're doing the right thing, you're already more adult than about half the US.

I just don't know what to do anymore. And I'll never commit suicide. I'm too in love with me....So what am I supposed to do?

The air force is all I have. And **** college....That **** is expensive for nothing! I already know how to draw. I haven't learned anything in the last 3 years there!!

Well, I learned how to drink more.

I hear there's still some niches in porn that you could fill [:cwink:].

Seriously, though. From everything I understand, you really don't learn as much in College as you would expect. I used to get pissed because I was passed up for jobs because I wasn't "properly certified" or "didn't have a degree", despite the fact that I work circles around the people who did. Even if you look at it like "I'm spending time and money for paper that says "I have wasted this time and money, so give me a job", that's something more than a lot of people have.

I dunno--maybe the Air Force is right for you, maybe it's not. All I'm saying is that it's not something you just want to dash into and not consider all the roles and points. Work a regular job, roomie with someone you know, or just bum it up back home for a bit with the folks to get some perspective if you have to. All I know is that rushing into a decision is very rarely a good idea.

A1C Crain, USAF Security Forces at your service.

You got questions on BMT, Tech School, Weather Apprentice, or SF, I'm you're guy.

I know most of these were answered already but let me add some things.

3) E-1 through E-4 are practically given to you. All you have to do is stay out of any major trouble and they're freebee stripes. My advice is to learn about the EPR system and keep track of career "bullets" and volunteer stuff. It goes a long way when going for "Below the Zone"...aka you get to put on E-4 six months early.

4) Just like any job you have, there will be good times and bad times. The only difference here is that you'll have a guaranteed job at the end of it all. And in my opinion, the good times outweigh the bad.

5) lol, no. - Cockyness aside, we are all apart of one team, one fight.

I don't believe in this war either. In fact, I wish to be stationed FAR from it. But I've always liked planes AND the air force. The technology, weapons, outfits(clothing),outfits(stations/troops) and everything always wowed me.

Nothing wrong with being in a support element. If you're looking for a good career/life kick start, the AF has a ton of bonuses. Free college, guaranteed paycheck and you get paid to work out and stay in shape during work hours.:woot:

Air force= win.

Damn straight!

But after an accident that happened and with how my life sucks....I'm beginning to see no future. I've debated breaking up with her just to give her a better life with someone who matters. And leave it up to destiny---that's stupid.

The AF gives you more housing allowance and substance allowance for you and your dependents if you decide to get married.

I just want to grab control of this daily ********. It's so annoying being stuck here. And Japan was beautiful. I want to see the world. I felt adult for the first time in my life when I want to Japne it was so cool.

Kadena, Misawa, Tokyo... All have jobs that the AF has spots for. If you want to travel you can put your base of preference sheet for overseas. (Europe is available too).

I just don't know what to do anymore. And I'll never commit suicide. I'm too in love with me....So what am I supposed to do?

All you need is a little courage. :woot:

The air force is all I have. And **** college....That **** is expensive for tnhothing I already know how to draw. I haven't learnt andyhing in the last 3 years there!!

Once again, you get college credits for Basic and your tech school. From there on you have 100% tuition assistance (TA) towards a AS degree. And beyond that you can keep using your TA towards a 4 year degree. Not to mention on top of that you would also have the GI bill.

Well, I learned how to drink more.

Yes! Good times. I'll be glad to return to them once I'm out of the classes I'm in right now. Haven't had a drink for over two months because of my training. Not forced to do it, just a personal choice.

I guess the big thing here is what career path you really want to go down. What are you interested in doing?

umm...the army?? I don't know the technical names for all that stuff, but i know it's not Marines, Navy or Air Force.

You should probably get to know the name of the thing you're attempting to join so when you get blowed up, you know who to blame.
