This entire weekend is overrun with graduation events, culminating with us hosting an RSVP’ed guest list of about 60 people on Monday afternoon. (It looks like I will have about 30 lbs of meat on the smoker all day Sunday and into Sunday night.)
But my hand to God, I am going to try and do everything in my power to see this movie the second I am given some downtime. Maybe even discount Tuesday.
I've got another showing in about an hour, but after first viewing I liked it quite a bit. It's definitely got major issues setting everything up and is pretty messy up until the opening credits, but after that it settles in pretty quickly.
The two main set pieces are pretty breathtaking. Initial reaction is to rank it somewhere in to that middle range. I think I sit at like:
1. Rogue Nation
2. Fallout
3. Mission: Impossible
4. Ghost Protocol
5. Dead Reckoning Part 1
6. Final Reckoning
7. III
8. II

Dead Reckoning - Part 1
The Final Reckoning
I have seen the first three but I can't really remember them anymore. I would like to see a ninth movie that would serve as a better final movie, but that would be mission: impossible.
Wow what a film, Tom Cruise is truly insane and one talented S.O.B. who loves to entertain an audience with his stylish death defying stunts. Give this man an award for all he's done for the art of cinema.
I enjoyed the film for tying up so many plot threads from previous installment from the franchise. I was especially surprised at how much dedication was focused on M:I: 3. & Mission Impossible.
The tone of the film is more serious and dire than previous films. Very lightweight on the comedy especially for Benji character who usually provides humor.
The two actions set pieces had me fully invested and was worth the price of admission alone. My god in heaven that byplane sequence with Ethan Hunt hanging off the side at high altitude. I was on the edge of my seat.
the underwater sequence in the sub had my blood pumping with immense tension .
This was the messiest of the McQ installments by far, but I still had a great time. The submarine and airplane sequences were both action movie all-timers. While the messiness was honestly kinda fun, the real reason I can't rate this as highly as the last few is that Ilsa and Luther left too big a hole in the team for me. Like during that last scene with the sentimental "head nod" goodbyes, I was just left thinking how much more effective it would be if it wasn't predominantly made up of people we just met in the previous movie. Like, that wasn't MY team, ya know? I wasn't invested in them. That could've been a much more poignant farewell (if it even is meant to be one) if it were Ethan, Benji, Ilsa and Luther. Speaking of, knowing now that Ilsa's death was for real has dragged down Dead Reckoning in my estimation, because that was not a proper sendoff for her AT ALL.
I also have to say my favorite little arc in the last few movies that I thought had a nice payoff here was Angela Bassett's. She went from being the CIA director who wouldn't trust a single mission to Ethan, to being the President who at the last moment finally decided to bet the world on him. That was quite satisfying to me.
My rankings:
1.) Fallout
2.) Rogue Nation
3.) Ghost Protocol
4.) Dead Reckoning
5.) Final Reckoning
6.) M:I-III
7.) M:I
8.) M:I-2
Can’t wait to see this but I am not sure when I’m going to get around to it. Might have to wait for physical release. Unless I can to get to the theater alone because my girl hatesssss Cruise

I can promise you once it's out on physical and you see the submarine and biplane sequences for the first time, you will feel immediately regret not doing the right decision a few months prior.

It's definitely messy and a bit overlong but I was honestly never bored during it and had a blast with it from beginning to end.
I didn't mind the first half which I know a lot of people have been complaining about it moved at a good pace for the most part IMO and there's still plenty of stuff happening even if it's not some HUGE action set piece.
As others have already started the two BIG set pieces are definitely the standouts of the movie but I also really love and appreciate the ambition and scope that McQ has given us in these last two movies even if I don't think the idea behind The Entity was all that well fleshed out and should have been better utilized in this movie since it is the finale.
I'm also a little disappointed at how kind of wasted Esai Morales was in both films. I like like him a lot as an actor but honestly it almost felt like you didn't even need him to comeback for this movie except to become more involved in the third act.
That being said this movie is a pure rush of adrenaline and spectacle that can only be appreciated on the bigscreen.

I probably won't be able to catch it until maybe next week or the week after. I am knee deep in prep for a kids birthday party this weekend and then just work stuff. Wanted to also catch Thunderbolts again. But haven't been able to.
Horribly jarring first half filled with terrible editing, unlimited exposition, and a **** ton of flashbacks and flashforwards. For the last 2 hours, I was DIALED IN.
I love this series. This movie, in particular, is a mess, but still ABSOLUTELY worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. The biplane sequence alone is jaw-dropping and worth the price of admission. Really fun time at the movies.
I am blown away by how little faith The Final Reckoning has in it's audience. It's like they think you are not only not a fan of Mission Impossible, not only did you not watch the last movie, but it seems to think you didn't watch the last scene. And just when you think that's over, it happens again. With an old scene or a plot point they've shown you at least twice already. It's baffling because this is not how the other 3 McQ movies are put together at all. It feels like a situation where they felt the need to tie the whole series together while treating this like it's a movie you didn't have to see anything else beforehand. Even as so much of the emotional payoff is connected to having actually watched the other movies.
That brings me to the general tone of the movie. In the last three movies, the audience is kind of in on the joke. Ethan's running, it's what he does, chuckle. This movie is absence that, and comes off overly serious with the exception of Gabriel, who is a cartoon villain. I think because of this Ethan "Jesus" Hunt lost a lot of his charm for me here. Something I never expected.
What works in this movie is the new team members (Pom doesn't get a lot but what she has she sells like mad), the Entity, abd most of the stuff with the president. Really liked the sub crew and most of what happens in the Bering sea. A lot of the second act really works.
And special shout out to:
Pegg, Atwell, and Pom killing it during the finale. Who ever decided Pom should only speak French really setup that sequence perfectly as it allowed for Benji to talk to both in a very clear and fun manner.
I got enjoyment out of it but it is not a good movie and this one feels like it's going to be a lot worse the more I watch it. It hurts because even if I didn't like it, I did not expect my issue to be a collapse of basic storytelling skills.
Oh and for the love of God, someone give Pom her own action series. She's everything.

I didn't mind the exposition dump, especially since I watched all seven films before seeing this one. However for the general audience who may not have seen all the previous installments this served a purpose. Case in point I had a friend who hasn't seen any of the movies watched the film appreciate the trip back down memory lane that she wants to re-watch the series with me.
