Action-Adventure Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning/The Final Reckoning

While the messiness was honestly kinda fun, the real reason I can't rate this as highly as the last few is that Ilsa and Luther left too big a hole in the team for me. Like during that last scene with the sentimental "head nod" goodbyes, I was just left thinking how much more effective it would be if it wasn't predominantly made up of people we just met in the previous movie. Like, that wasn't MY team, ya know? I wasn't invested in them. That could've been a much more poignant farewell (if it even is meant to be one) if it were Ethan, Benji, Ilsa and Luther. Speaking of, knowing now that Ilsa's death was for real has dragged down Dead Reckoning in my estimation, because that was not a proper sendoff for her AT ALL.
I agree. I'm surprised they didn't pull out the stops and bring back Paula Patton, Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers at least as cameos. Even though they were all one-and-done appearances from the pre-McQuarrie films they were still IMF. Jeremy Renner too but he declined to return when he found out they were killing his character in Fallout so I'm not sure how that would have worked.

I want to talk about my experience watching the film at a later time.
For now, my rankings.
1. Final Reckoning.
2. Rogue Nation.
3.Fallout.
4.Ghost Protocol.
5. Mission Impossible(1996).
6.Dead Reckoning.
7.MI III.
8.MI II.

Judging on rewatchability alone.

1) Ghost Protocol
2) Fallout
3) M:I-III
4) Rogue Nation
5) M:I
6) Dead Reckoning
7) M:I-II
8) Final Reckoning

I don't see myself getting into Final Reckoning for fun.

IMO, I think they should've replaced McQuarrie after Fallout.

As often mentioned, the first part of the movie seemingly bombards you with exposition. And at points, I couldn’t tell if the filmmakers were trying to homage plot ideas from past films or if they were out of ideas and just started copying themselves.

The two big set pieces were great, but other than that, there is very little of this movie I'd want to revisit. Certain sendoffs feel half baked, as do certain revelations, and this movie is a reminder that character work really isn't this franchise's strong suit.

As a conclusion to the franchise, it was kind of underwhelming.

My M:I film rankings:

1. Ghost Protocol
2. Fallout
3. Mission: Impossible
4. Rogue Nation
5. Dead Reckoning
6. III
7. The Final Reckoning
8. II

They tried to get Renner for at least one of these last two films but he declined because it would cut into his time with his little girl.

I assume that is why they brought back Alec Baldwin's character? Because Brent would've had that same role (including his same ending)?

Can we all agree the movie had the worst mask gag of the entire series? They really put no effort on it whatsoever.
Actually, I can’t agree with that because it was one of the few light hearted moments in the film. That, and some of the dialogue spoken by, Paris in the third act.

Sure, but you're talking about the scene (which I agree). Not the mask reveal itself.

Except that the mask reveal is KEY to that scene. otherwise it’s Just people in a room interacting with each other,

They probably both would have died if Renner came back but he said he didn't want to fly halfway around the world just to be killed off. It's interesting how there was speculation about him taking over the franchise from Cruise back in the day that ultimately went to the character just being quietly dropped from the films.

No one told me the movie was so long, jfc, my everything. And I was so tense through most of it, I gave myself a headache. lol

I mean, I liked it. I didn't mind the exposition, needed it, actually. I've only seen the first couple MI movies. I even remembered That Guy, wow. Made me think of Midnight Run a couple times, the movie just. keeps. going.

Like, everything in the ice felt like the final stretch. But then he's in his little tent, and I was like oh wait no. That would've been the perfect length for me, but it's fine. The funny faces from all the wind when he's climbing around on the planes were worth it. I did think he could just grab the thing from the guy's neck and let himself fall. He'd have enough time to put it in the other thing before he dies. (None of the names stuck, sorry.) But that would've been a downer ending so maybe not.

Oh. Not sure why it stuck out to me, but the sound design on the sunken sub was nice.

Whew, ok. This movie...ok. (takes a breath)

Maybe its just me and my simple mindedness but I have no idea what the plot of this movie was. There was so much blah blah blah blah blah exposition that I just eventually got lost in the sauce and lost track of the stakes and why the crew was going to a specific location to do a speciifc thing to retrieve a specific object.

I get it, convoluted plots are part of the charm of spy movies. I dont understand half the plots of the James Bond movies, i just kind of let them carry me through their beautiful vistas and set pieces and I enjoy myself, and the M:I movies are no different. But man this entity plot guys...this aint it.

And man, was this a Tom Cruise wankfest. So much straight faced serious monologuing about how Ethan is the savior of all mankind. Something about how they kept constantly ringing that bell throughout the movie was offputting to me and I cant help but feel that was at Cruise's demand.

But its a FINE summer blockbuster. The set pieces are impressive as they always are with every installment. Although the third act is literally a CTRL+C of Fallout's but whatever. Actually can someone explain how Ethan landed safely? I thought his parachute burnt mid descent? What did I miss there? I was a little checked out so I'm sure I missed something.

Backup parachute. We see him attempting to deploy it before it cuts back to Grace waiting for the green light.

I went to the screening with four of my friends. None of us was sure how that happened. :funny:

Rough first hour but goddamn, those last two hours more than made up for it.

Got a big laugh out of Tom Cruise scolding us for spending too much time on the internet.

Luther </3

As I predicted the Entity is still massively problematic. The ending makes no sense. Dealing with the Entity makes no sense.

It's a watered-down Skynet 2.0.

Also they don't explore Gabriel as a villain at all. The last movie implied that Gabriel and Ethan have a shared history, but they don't do anything with that at all.

Does this work as a double feature with the last one?

I can tell you that's a long sit.

But yeah, mostly. There are threads introduced in the first one that very frustratingly have zero payoff here, but otherwise, sure.

It does feel like they added a bunch of stuff and exposition to retool it from a part two to kind of a "let's make this a sequel to every movie, for people who don't remember any of the movies" kinda deal.

But more or less, yeah, kinda.
