How was Sean Harris as the villain?

He wasn't as good as Owen Davian played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. However he definitely had an ominous presence as the villain which worked in his favour and made him a worthy opponent against Ethan. I loved the showdown confrontational face-off at the end with Lane and Hunt.

^^Agree with that PSH still the best MI villain.

I didn't expect to read the above (spoilers added) when I got on this thread.

Well you know there's plane sequence I didn't spoil anything. it's what they've marketed the whole frikin movie on.

Yeah but even the trailer and spots didn't spoil the suspense of the sequence, the full sequence is freaking awesome. I never expected it to occurred when it did much less the conclusion of the sequence was also sweet. Damn Tom Cruise is incredibly FEARLESS!

Going to see this in like 4 hours. Very excited.

How was Sean Harris as the villain?

He was fine, suitably menacing, maybe his backstory could have been a little more original and fleshed out but MI is always more about the stunts than the villains so maybe it wont matter too much.

For a person who was suppose to be the head of the "anti-IMF", him and his organization just felt a bit wasted. Feels like much more can be done with this premise. Kind of hope they bring them back.

:D Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I forgot to mention, in case it wasn't clear from my previous post - this is easily the best of the franchise, imo. I absolutely adored Ghost Protocol, but this one has all the same elements I loved about that one (the team dynamic, sense of fun and awesomely directed action), and then on top of that, adds what GP was sorely lacking - a good villain and smart script. It's just a natural evolution from that one, basically.

I'm glad to hear that and I absolutely loved GP myself.

To anyone else, is this worth seeing in IMAX despite not being shot in the format? I know they digitally converted it to the format.

Well, The Syndicate was a villain from the MI TV series .
So , its certainly possible.

Yeah.....I knew there was a plane sequence. Didn't know when it would happen. Now I do.

It's always worth seeing in IMAX. Almost nothing is shot in IMAX so almost everything is converted. Yes, yes, yes.

I would say if that's your only "large format" option, then yeah it's definitely worth it. Definitely try to see it on a really big screen if you can.

I saw it in Regal's RPX format. My local Regal has both RPX and IMAX at the same theater. Both screens are similar size and both have really good projector quality, but RPX is about $2 cheaper. :woot:

This movie was awesome! I loved it. Going back and forth on which film is the best (this or GP). I can't wait for the next one. LOVED Rebecca Ferguson as Faust. She had better come back, dammit! Also, I want her to play a superhero. ANY superhero.

Better or on par with GP until the climax. RN outdoes GP in being a spectacle but in the climax, it tries to be MI1 cat and mouse gritty espionage and it doesnt pull it off as well IMO. Great movie nonetheless.

Ghost Protocol 9/10
Rogue Nation 8.5/10
Mission Impossible 8/10
Mission Impossible III 7/10
Mission Impossible II 6.5/10

I nominate Mission: Impossible III, Ghost Protocol, and Rogue Nation for "Most fun you can have watching a trilogy", because I find these films immensely satisfying as far as action films go.

The Vienna Opera scene was by far the best set-piece for me, and Rebecca Ferguson was great.

As with Fury Road, I'm glad the main female lead wasn't turned to romantic fodder at the end. Just a hug, which told me way more about how she felt about Hunt than had she resulted to a typical goodbye kiss. Yes, they hinted at something resembling a romantic interest, but it was much more subtle and earned than in most action films, which I appreciated.

Overall, I'd give this an 8. I really enjoyed it, and Cruise has been killing it between the last three M:I films, Edge of Tomorrow, and Jack Reacher.

Wowwy Oh my Rebecca Ferguson is one serious badass woman. Easily the best female lead in the franchise she can act, she can fight and Damn she's mighty fine. I can see her easily being casted as a female action star. Which company will recruit her first Marvel or Dc Comics?

She seems like she'd be up for it from the interviews I've seen. She's pretty funny.

In that case I'll do so. Besides, it's worth giving them my money since I loved GP so much.

Bird brought the fun and spy-like nature of the original show back with GP and it seems like McQuarrie kept that intact.

As more of a DC guy, I'm hoping they get her but either would be fine. I could see her as Catwoman, Captain Marvel, Hawkgirl, Jenny Sparks, etc.

She'd have also made a great Wonder Woman.

I didn't understand why she was adamant that she take her shoes off when running and fighting. Doesn't she know that you can outrun a Tyrannosaurus Rex in high heels? :woot:

I would put it slightly above GP although this one seemed to have less of a team focus. Not as bad as bad as MI or MI2 but it was really was just the Ethan and Benji show with Brandt and Luther on the outskirts.

But as far as what I liked and disliked

Liked:
- Ilsa Faust. Loved that she wasn't just a love interest. The last two movies have done a good job of giving us strong females who are more than eye candy. It's come a long way since Nadya Hall.
- The score. Although I was hoping to hear the main theme at least once. We got teases of it but nothing after the opening sequence.
- The villain. I thought he was the second best in the series after Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I liked how they defeated him as well and it wasn't just a slugfest between him and Ethan.

Minor nitpicks:
- The CIA was pretty incompetent in this one. Baldwin gave a good performance but I remember in the first one when they were going after Hunt, they were smart enough to go after his parents and make him come to them. Also, if Luther had quit, how was he allowed back into the headquarters?
- The opening sequence could have been longer. I felt like I had seen it all in the trailers. There weren't any new shots of him hanging on the plane. It was fun but too short.
- The action is reaching Fast and Furious levels of believability. Hunt crashes on a motorcycle going full speed with no helmet and doesn't have a scratch. He and Benji flip 5 times in a car and can walk away.

Overall loved it and can't wait to see the next one.

Ghost Protocol was.

Not exactly, but not wrong either. According to Wikipedia, Ghost Protocol was

"the first Mission: Impossible film to be partially filmed using IMAX cameras".

Didn't know that though. For the record, a movie filmed and shown in a true IMAX format can be visually spectacular. I remember TDK (also partially shot with IMAX cameras) and some of those scenes shot by Nolan almost had me gasping for air. Those high up scenes with a lot of motion can get your heart stuck right in your throat.

The skyscraper scene in Ghost Protocol is the best Hollywood IMAX footage so far in my opinion. I was squirming in my seat during that scene in the IMAX theater. Makes you feel like you are hanging off the tallest building in the world.

That's what I meant. I didn't elaborate on the partiality because it was a given. Nobody can yet shoot a whole film in Imax because of its limitations. I mean, they can, but all the dialogue would have to be dubbed.
