In an interview with the Edmonton Sun conducted during E3, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto was asked several questions concerning the Wii, as well as Sony's recently unveiled PlayStation 3 controller, which utilizes a type of motion sensing technology somewhat similar to what Nintendo has incorporated within its next-generation controller.

When asked what he thought of Sony's new controller, and if he thought Sony had purposely copied the idea from Nintendo, Miyamoto commented: "It's kind of what always seems to happen. But the fact that they looked at what we were doing and decided it was a good path is kind of flattering, it kind of reinforces in our minds that we're doing the right thing."

He continued: "What they've done is just take your standard controller and add in this motion-sensing device that's similar to what we did back on the Game Boy Color many years ago. Maybe if they were to completely copy and go with a remote and a nunchuk and two motion sensors, I might be a little more concerned. But I don't think they're anywhere close to that."

Miyamoto was also questioned on the Wii remote itself, specifically regarding the possible concern by players who do not want to get up and move in order to play games for the Wii, to which Miyamoto responded: "The fact of the matter is, if you want to, you can play in much the same style as you did before. You can sit with Zelda and just with little movements you can control the game perfectly well."

He capped off his interview with the Edmonton Sun by adding: "But at the same time, I tend to find that moving around a bit more tends to be more fun.

TO ME, THAT SIMPLY CONFIRMS MY SUSPICION THAT IT'S MORE GIMMICK, THAN TRUE INNOVATION, AND A "NEW" WAY TO PLAY GAMES. :down:o

Why did I know you would be the first to reply? :p

You'll have one and you know it.

How do you figure? Because you dont have to do backflips with the controller for it to work it then becomes a gimmick?

c'mon, Thwip, he's just giving the old school gamers the chance to play it the old way if they choose. You just sound like your playa hating

Or it is just an option for people who don't want to do it. I do not like swinging with the right analog on MLB 2k6, so I am able to turn the controls to classic and swing with the x button. Does that make the new swinging a gimmick? No, its just not for everyone.

Then again, why argue with THWIP? In fact, heres a prediction....

NAH, I'M JUST CONSISTENT. I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE LAST YEAR, WHEN WE FIRST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE CONTROLLER, AND NOW MIYAMOTO HIMSELF HAS CONFIRMED WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM: IF YOU WANT TO BE A TRUE INNOVATOR, YOU HAVE TO JUMP IN WITH BOTH FEET, AND LOOK BACK. YOU CAN'T RIDE THE FENCE, AND BUILD IN A "FAILSAFE", LIKE THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE. I'D HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED, IF HE'D SAID SOMETHING LIKE "THE THING IS, OUR CONTROLLER IS SO PRECISE, AND TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED, THAT IT TRANSCENDS ANYTHING THAT'S BEEN DONE IN THE PAST. BUT, WE FEEL GAMERS WILL GET USED TO IT, AND EVENTUALLY SEE THE VALUE IN EXCERCISING WHILE YOU GAME."
INSTEAD, HE BASICALLY SAYS "ASIDE FROM THE LOOK/DESIGN, IT'S REALLY NO DIFFERENT FROM THE NOW TRADITIONAL CONTROLLER.........BUT YOU CAN PRETEND IT IS, IF YOU WANT.".

Oh, give me a break, if they hadn't built a fail safe you would be complaining that they did not make it accessible to all gamers. You're just a Microsoft fanboy...everyone here acknowledges it except you.

Oh come on, you old foolio
You still need an old-school controller for the emulation

THAT'S NOT WHAT HE'S SAYING THOUGH, DIPWAD. :o

no you wouldn't have :p

I just grew to understand that for some odd reason TWIP* hates Nintendo, he always will. I won't knock the 360 (because it's awesome) or call him a Microsoft fanboy (because I also am a fan of Microsoft) I just wait for the day he plays a Wii and loves it.

May be a while, but ah well. Until then I'll deal with his hater posts. There WILL be shrudes that refuse to use the Wiimote, so Nintendo has to give them something. Gammera also pointed out that the "set and play" remote is a MUST for the emulated games.

If the Wiimote itself is a gimmick, so is everything else in the video game world. The whole "plays dvd craze" is a gimmick, updated graphics are gimmicks, ect.

I'VE BEEN SAYING THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE TO ALL GAMERS ANYWAY. BUT THEN AGAIN, THAT'S NEVER BEEN 'NINTENDO'S WAY.

AND NO, THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO STILL MAKE SUCH A LAME ACCUSATION, ARE THE FEW WHO STILL HAVE THEIR HEADS STUCK UP THEIR ASSES, OR DON'T KNOW MY GAMING HISTORY. YOU FALL IN THE FIRST CATEGORY. :o

Oh he's just cranky cause I beat his clown-ass in Fight Night Round 3....if the Wii gets good games (and it will), he'll get one.

YES, I ACTUALLY WOULD HAVE........BUT THEN AGAIN, I WAS 100% CONFIDENT THAT WASN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. ;)

1 TIME, AND IT TOOK YOU 9 ROUNDS TO DO IT. I NORMALLY TAKE YOUR ASS DOWN WITHIN THE FIRST 2-3 ROUNDS. :o

That's not what he said. You are mistaken.

Thwip* is an undercover MS rep. Hes been planted on these boards to sway public opinion there way.

Whether it's gimmicky or not, it's still something new and important to the overall goal of Nintendo's plan. Having two screens for a handheld could be considered a gimmick and the DS sells very well.

I've been a fan of Sony's since the first PS, but with this new generation of gaming, Nintendo has my interest the most with some of the new ideas that are coming out of them.

Plus they are not leaving those that don't want to use the Wii-mote out in the cold. There are certain games that I don't think I would want to use it on, and they are giving us the option of using a controller in those instances. There are many games and ideas that are implementing the Wii-mote, and several companies are saying that it is making them come up with NEW and interesting ways to approach gaming.

Nintendo is keeping their promise to be about innovation and gaming, and they are really stepping up to the plate and showing the other two big companies that they are not through yet.

I take care of a family and have a limited budget, and Nintendo has me willing to spend my money on their system. Sony will have to wait a couple of years for it. :)

Im seeing this more and more lately. In 2000 this was not the case as everyone was a PS2 fan. The tides are turning again I think.
