moments in movies that made your jaw drop

Spider-Man, when the Green Goblin drops the pumpkin bomb in front of Spidey left me speechless.

Jurassic Park. T-rex's leg comes down into the mud.
T2. when the t-1000 breaks the glass in the copter and pours himself into the seat
Superman the movie. Superman flying.
The Thing. "You have got to be f***ing kidding me"
Sin City. the whole thing
Batman 1989. Batwing into the moon
Transformers the movie (animated). Unicron transforms. also "Arise Rodimus Prime"
Transformers (live action) Optimus stands up for the first time
Empire Strikes Back. "No, I am your father"

Just a couple (biased) ones for me:

1) Spider-Man - The final battle sequence. I was thrown off by the sheer brutality. I mean, throughout the whole movie the Green Goblin didn't seem to be that large of a threat to Spider-Man, that big of a challenge...but that perception got shattered when he nearly beat Spidey to death.

2) Spider-Man 2 - The clocktower/train sequence. That is how an experienced Spidey should move! The fight was so masterfully done...'nuff said.

3) Spider-Man 3 - The birth of the Sandman! Perfect in every single way. It conveyed and evoked so many emotions, and the effects, oh, god the effects! From a special-effects standpoint, this may be one of the most under-discussed scenes in cinematic history.

Two come to mind:

The first appearance of the tripod in war of the worlds (as mentioned once on the first page), and the birth of Sandman.

I guess it would be at the end of Saw. Where Jiggs gets up off the floor, and seeing the expression of Adams face was priceless. Along with the theme music playing it made that sequence very spooky.

good one

I jumped a few feet and my mouth was hanging open when Costigan was killed in The Departed. That was just shocking.

there is a lot that comes to mind when i first saw it, superman, Jurassic park, star wars, LOTR, the departed, fight club, memento and maybe even transformers....but nothing beats the first viewing I had of

The Matrix

it wins all of it. I still sometimes feel the shock I first felt when he opens the door and gets shot in the chest. and then when he gets up! freakin amazing every time.

The entire film of Dead Alive (a.k.a. Brain Dead) when I saw the unedited version on late night cable TV almost 10 years ago.
This was before CGI was as prominent as it is now and they did everything practicaly in that film. I couldn't believe the outrageous stuff I was seeing. It was all at once disgusting, hilarious, and incredibly creative. I didn't know how to react.
The Road Warrior was pretty impressive to me as a kid.
Funny, but with the advent of CGI, I'm just not wowed like I used to be because I know it isn't real. The CGI of King Kong is really one of the few exceptions. I would put the T-rex fight in the jaw dropping category.

 love that scene. followed by one of the best lines ever!
"we're going to need a bigger boat." !!!

Funny, but I just watched that night before last (it takes place on 4th of July after all)...and that has been and still is practically my favorite movie since I was 6 years old. Such a good movie!

Raiders of the Lost Ark: The scene where Indy falls into a pit of snakes was definitely a shocker.

Jurassic Park: The first appearance of the T-Rex, which has already been mentioned. The kitchen scene with the raptors was another highlight.

Saving Private Ryan: The opening scene. Nuff said.

The Matrix: The opening scene and the lobby fight.

Terminator 2: The action sequences in this movie were simply jaw dropping.

Saw: The ending of course.

Legend of Drunken Master: Most of the action scenes in this one are jaw dropping as well.

There's more, but I'm tired right now. I'll list some more tomorrow.

Most things in Lord of the Rings, but certainly the moment I will never forget seeing for the first time was the ride of the rohirrim from return of the king. That was just incredible.
That scene gave me chills when I was reading it in the book, it was so powerful. Seeing it on screen was almost too much for me. It was incredible

I was going to mention this too, but I thought we were limiting it to American films, because this opens a hole new realm.

I first saw this movie at a Chinese film festival under it's real name, Drunken Master 2. It was years before it was re-released and re-dubbed for American movie theaters. ( If you don't mind sub-titles like me, you really need to see it without the crappy English dubbing and with it's original music which is awesome!) This was again before CGI moved it's way into fight scenes. Yeah, my jaw was on the floor and I was sure that Jackie Chan had real super powers! In fact, this needs to go in the thread for greatest fight scene ever!

The big fight and the highway scene in Matrix Reloaded.

The Departed has two really great ones:

When Captain Queenan (Martin Sheen) is thrown off the roof, and everything just goes silent until he finally hits the ground. I remember when me, my mom and my brother saw it in the theater, everyone in there went silent. A brilliant sequence, and proof of just how great Scorsese truly is.

and

When Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) gets killed. After all the **** he'd been through, throughout the entire movie, you'd think in the end they'd cut him a break and he'd get out alive. But the killing is so shocking, so unexpected (unless you've seen the original Asian version, Infernal Affairs) that ending it in any other way would've defeated the dramatic impact to a grest degree. Again, great proof of how great Scorsese is.

Other moments:

The "Tiny Dancer" singalong in Almost Famous
The Nazis' head exploding in Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Jack Napier's (Jack Nicholson) reemergence as The Joker (when he kills Grishom, played the late, great Jack Palance)
The revelation at the end of The Empire Strikes Back
The lady in the bathtub in The Shining
Phoebe Cates' nude scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High
icon10.gif

The photographer (David Warner) working with Robert Thorne (Gregory Peck) getting decpatitated in The Omen
The little boy getting devoured by the shark in Jaws.

When Costigan gets killed i just sat there with my jaw touching the floor
:o

In Jaws when Quint gets eaten. I wanted that badass to survive. Even though the shark looks a bit fake it's amazing. Everytime the shark attacks is great. Like in the cage with Hooper, or with Brody when he shoves the compressed air tank in it's mouth. The whole final sequence is excellent and jaw(!) dropping.

in Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (Jimmy Stewart version) there is a sequence in the Royal Albert Hall. Whilst watching that, you do not breathe. Jawdropping suspense.
