Va. Congressman Fears Election Of 'Many More Muslims'

WASHINGTON - A Virginia congressman has warned that "many more Muslims" will be elected demanding to use the Quran unless immigration is tightened. Republican Rep. Virgil Goode made the comment in a letter to constituents who had written in about Congressman-elect Keith Ellison's decision to use the Quran at his ceremonial swearing-in.

"I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way," Goode wrote.

Should Goode Apologize?
"The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran," he said. "I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America."
Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, is the first Muslim elected to Congress. He was born in Detroit and converted to Islam in college.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group, called on Goode to apologize for the letter.
"Representative Goode's Islamophobic remarks send a message of intolerance that is unworthy of anyone elected to public office," said Corey Saylor, legislative director for CAIR. "There can be no reasonable defense for such bigotry."
Saylor said Goode's remarks follow a recent commentary by radio talk show host Dennis Prager, a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Prager that swearing an oath on the Quran "undermines American civilization." CAIR has asked President George W. Bush to remove Prager from the taxpayer-supported council.
A spokesman for Goode said no apology was forthcoming, and that the congressman stands by the letter

Not a big deal to me. The congressman has the right to say idiotic comments, and everyone else has the right to call him on it.

As to Ellison using the qu'ran instead of the bible, I don't care.

Isn't this evidence of Rep. Virgil Goode's bigotry and not of conservative bigotry?

Why doesn't he demand that Islam be banned from America? The Islamic Congressman was born in Detroit and later after seeing what was out there converted to Islam. He didn't immigrant to America. Do they prevent anyone who is a Muslim from seeking office? Like Muslim extremists need any more reasons to hate America.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I may be conservative, but I'm not a bigot.

This reminds me of that article when a former priest burned himself to death beacause he feared the west would be an Islamic state, of course, Goode didn't go that far as to do anything like that but fear...:ninja:

Exactly! This is just another one of his threads in which he unnecessarily and senselessly criticizes all conservatives, regardless of whether or not they identify with the Republican party. He's simply too close-minded to be able to understand what these terms actually mean or what they imply, and I gave up trying to inform him a long time ago. I mean, he doesn't even know how to do basic high school Algebra.

Nobody should be sworn in on any religious document.

Bigotry is not a needed ingredient for a person to be conservative but I personally feel that too often bigotry fules conservatism.

You know I used to actually feel that way, butn ow I think its okay if they swear in on something that means something to them. I'm an atheist so I would never choose to, but to each his own.

What a f***ing a**Hole, if they support using a bible yet the koran isn't allowed then just don't care about free speech. I wish they abolish religion from the government or there would be more assassins.

hopefully he isn't funded the Taliban or Ole' Al Queda! Hopefully He actually does good things while in office.

Whiel that does make sense, I also believe that people shouldn't swear on any sort of religous document based on Separation of Church and State.

Whiel you do bring up a good point that people could swear on somethign that is of personal importance to them, I believe that if it was of that much importance, they wouldn't need to swear on it, but would live their life through it anyway, which would mean telling the truth. They could also swear on whatever document they wished to personally, but it should never be mandated by law or anything IMO.

Ignorance plagues both sides of the political spectrum no matter what your affilliation is. Most conservatives are not bigots like this jackass. Get this idea that conservatives are evil out of your head.

Well most conservatives are like this but don't say these things. Igornance is part of the political system and until religion is truly separted from government, igornance shall stuck around.

Being a muslim doesn't make someone automatically a terrorist.

If you're going to make accusations, have some facts to back it up ok?
