CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CBS) -- A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas some harsh words for a mother charged with spanking her own child, before sentencing her to probation.

"You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children."

Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case." They noted she didn't use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks.

As part of the plea deal, Gonzales will serve five years probation, during which tiume she;ll have to take parenting classes, follow CPS guidelines, and make a $50 payment to the Children's Advocacy Center.

She was arrested back in December after the child's paternal grandmother noticed red marks on the child's rear end. The grandmother took the girl, who was two years-old at the time, to the hospital to be checked out.

Gonzales doesn't have custody of the child or her other two children. She is trying to get them back, but until CPS feels she is ready the kids are living with their paternal grandmother.

I wouldn't spank a two year old, but that's still over the top.

Wow Texas? No offense but I thought you guys were less... wussy.
Focus on real crime kthnkx!

Kids today need to get spanked. Kids today are mostly ******* *****ebags.

"In the old days, maybe we got spanked. But that's a different quarrel"

haha sorry, I picture the judge as a cowboy now.

Wow, what? This is totally wrong... unless she was beating the child, I don't see a problem. Kids needs a little spanking sometimes when they're being bad, otherwise they don't learn.

I agree with Harls. This is very wrong.

Judge is a dummy. Kids, I mean brats need spankings. I hated it as a kid, but now see that as a adult...only way to learn. My sisters 2 year old gets spanked a lot...doesn't learn though...kinda already has that "bully/I do what I want" side to him. For example, kid got in trouble for spitting at kids in daycare...

And then people wonder why kids get out of hand.....

It is Corpus Christi after all, they all are a bunch of hippies.

Jail is basically a long time out with cement walls. Soooooo she still got the upper hand unless her inmate is PO'd or horny lol

That was my reaction. I expected better from Texas.

Me too. This is the kind of crap I expect from California. There is nothing wrong with spanking Children, good grief.

I don't believe in spanking, but five years probation is ridiculously over-the-top. There is a difference between spanking and beating and considering she apparently didn't leave bruises, it sounds like it was a simple spanking. This isn't something the law even needed to be involved in at all.

Apparently, in Texas, domestic corporal punishment is illegal. What the punishment for punishment should be is debatable.

There are a fair number of studies which claim that spankings not only don’t work but also have negative long-term effects. From Wiki:

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in an official policy statement (reaffirmed in 2004) states that "Corporal punishment is of limited effectiveness and has potentially deleterious side effects." The AAP recommends that parents be "encouraged and assisted in the development of methods other than spanking for managing undesired behavior".

The Canadian Pediatrics Society policy on corporal punishment states "The Psychosocial Paediatrics Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society has carefully reviewed the available research in the controversial area of disciplinary spanking ... The research that is available supports the position that spanking and other forms of physical punishment are associated with negative child outcomes.

In the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists have both called for a complete ban on all corporal punishment, stating "We believe it is both wrong and impracticable to seek to define acceptable forms of corporal punishment of children. Such an exercise is unjust. Hitting children is a lesson in bad behaviour".

The Australian Psychological Society holds that physical punishment of children should not be used as it has very limited capacity to deter unwanted behavior, does not teach alternative desirable behavior, often promotes further undesirable behaviors such as defiance and attachment to "delinquent" peer groups, and encourages an acceptance of aggression and violence as acceptable responses to conflicts and problems.

I was "smacked" (Or spanked) when I was growing up but not very often. Two or three times in a year maybe. Although it is illegal here to smack (spank) your children.

smacking is ok when it is a last resort( i know anti smacking will say then you're not a good parent) but sorry at times talking to the child does not work.

if i got smacked then i knew i had gone to far

I uppercut my kids, and they like it dammit! And I dare anyone to stop me.

Texas, the State where you can carry around a friggin hand cannon... but can't spank your kids botty.

I wouldn't hit my dogs let alone my children, there are other ways of disciplining a child.

Spanking your kids is for lazy parents.

And the argument begins.

I guess that's why 80% of American Teenagers are ****ing *******s.

I remember back in the day watching a kid talk back to his mother at the store got back handed left and right (as if she were playing tennis)until her wrist gave out, a kind stranger who was watching the discipline interupted her and handed her his belt. Boy did she whoop his ass :(

I havent seen an asshooping so bad since John Amos appeared on the Archie's Place episode of "We're all Out of Job Applications!" I heard that after the show stopped filming they needed to rent an elephant to pull the foot from Archie's behind. Yea thats real, and kids these days think they are the shiznit, which leads to the creation of a nihilistic self-centered mindset generation of self mutilating , perverted, necrophiles! The kids you don't beat today could be tomorrow's rapists.

Word. :o
