Warner Bros. Dates ‘Dune’ For November 2020 & More

Set against the backdrop of 1950s New York, the pic follows Lionel Essrog (Norton), a lonely private detective afflicted with Tourette’s Syndrome, as he ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Norton writes and produces.

Good book but so much of what's great about it is how Lethem's prose brings us into the head of his protagonist, a detective with Tourette's. It's a strong character and the writing remains good throughout, but the plot itself is just okay noir.

Not sure how well that's going to translate to film but glad Ed Norton's in the starring role (and a great cast overall) plus the fact that he gets to direct his second movie after almost 20 years since KEEPING THE FAITH.

Norton wrote, directed and stars in the Warner Bros. movie, which uses the main character of Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn novel to tell a new neo-noir narrative set in 1950s New York. The actor plays Lionel Essrog, a lonely private detective with Tourette's, who, while dealing with the emotional fallout of a botched job, is drawn into a conspiracy that involves the city's racial divide and the actions of Alec Baldwin's Robert Moses-like master builder.

“Edward Norton has taken Jonathan Lethem’s novel as a jumping-off point to craft a wildly imaginative and extravagant love letter to New York, a beautifully told semi-musical hard-boiled yarn grounded in the mid-20th century history of the city," NYFF director and selection committee chair Kent Jones said in a statement.

It's got my attention. Norton is rarely in anything anymore.

This is a movie that was begging to have been shot on film. Needs a much more textured image and richer blacks. Could have been achieved with digital, too, but I'm not seeing it in this trailer. It looks very flat.

Also I'm afraid I'm not feeling 100% sold on Norton as Lionel Essrog. Guess we'll see.

Great cast but I don’t know if it can live up to the book.

Edward Norton's narrating in the trailer reminded me of Fight Club.

Never read the book, but this looks really good.

I saw this last night. I think it could've used a bit more editing but after reading some pretty bad reviews of it, I liked it more than I expected to.
