Whereas the motivations of Marvel's supervillains can be broken down into two categories- greed for the most part and those who aren't "in it for the money"(such as Dr Doom, Magneto or the Red Skull) have some kind of lust for power(motivated in the SKull's case by ideology-in his case Nazism or more recently nihilism), the motivations of the heroes who oppose them are less clear cut-even for themselves. Altruistic reasons may motivate , say Thor, Iron Man or the Fantastic Four- of protecting and defending mankind( as the newly transformed Ben Grimm says to Reed Richards in the premiere issue of the Fantastic Four- We have to use our powers to help humanity-right?"), others such as Spider-Man, the late Wasp(Janet Van Dyne), the Punisher and others have suffered the loss of a family member/loved one.
Straightforward patriotic reasons may motivate Captain America or the members of the various "national" super teams such as Excalibur, Big Hero 6, the Winter Guard and Alpha(or Omega) Flight whereas the X-Men's raison d'etre is to champion human/mutant coexistence and defend humanity against "evil"mutants such as Magneto.

If anybody can up with other reasons for heroes "fighting the good fight", then let me know( strangely enough mercenaries such as Paladin or The Heroes For Hire are pretty rare-like members of the emergency services, law enforcement bodies, or armed forces- it's NOT a job- it's what they ARE!!!).
