Given the artists who meet that criteria I'd say he's in pretty good company.
I'll agree that he's in good company as well but it doesn't take away the fact that his name wasn't spread around like the plague to the general movie goers until after his death. Before he died he was known with film fans like us but not nearly as many general movie goers.
I'm not considering them dull and boring BECAUSE of their age, I'm considering them dull and boring because they are. It just a coincidence that they are old.
Age does not matter to me or have anything to do with it. There are many classics of the 60's and 70's that I would say are better than most movies of the modern era. They have stood the test of time. My early prediction for best movie of all time is The Wizard of Oz from 1939. Not to mention, are the slew of other pre 1980 movies included: Raging Bull, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Last Tango in Paris, Cool Hand Luke, M.A.S.H., Planet of the Apes, Superfly, and Patton amongst many others from that time frame.
I'm not biased against old movies, I'm just a realist. They aren't as good. That's not to say, 15 years down the road I change mind. I just don't see them as quality films right now. Seriously, How are houses built around the 20's and 30's that have not had improvemnts viewed? Their viewed as trashy garbage most people don't want to bother with, regardless of how cheap they are. Same can be said for most of the older(pre-1960's) movies. That's the truth and that's all there is to it.
Nice to meet another realist but I guess this is where we disagree. Unlike houses which fall apart in a literal way movies do not. It's about being entertained and having fun, I can still go back, watch and enjoy the classic Universal monster movies in black and white as well as say a number of Vincent Price films (my fav genre is horror if you can't tell). I still enjoy the original King Kong despite the effects being outdated and some of the acting a little cheesier then what we have today.
I just can't share that attitude or opinion, it reminds me of the "hip" or "cool" kids, the sheep. When it comes to music with trendy people if a song has been out for like a month or two or more, it's considered old and your not cool if your still listening to it. I've always laughed at that notion since music is immortal and a good song will always be a good song. Funny how a lot of that crowd is the Pop/Dance/R&B crowd. To me that's what your argument reminds me of. It's outdated so it's not cool lets throw it away.
Oh yeah! I pick Howard.
