I thought it would be interesting to do a couple of threads talking about current issues surrounding movies at this present time. This is the first one, more will be done in the future.

A Dark Reality
Over the past few years, mainly at the start of the 2000's, movies have taken a more darker tone. Franchises have been reinvented, such as Batman Begins, with a more realistic approach and less of the 'cheesiness' the previous films from the 90's brought. Other Superhero films such as X-Men and Spiderman have also took a more realistic tone. Fans were screaming out for the movies to be get darker. Spiderman 3 seems the darkest movie in the franchise and looks like it will be the best.
Pan's Labyrinth is a dark fairytale, Children of Men is a realistic vision of the future. Both films are regarded 'masterpeices' and have won many awards. Why is it that people like darker, more realistic films? Is it because of the society we live in today? 9/11? The Iraq War? Are we all turning into Emo's? Could it simply be because people no longer like cheesiness in films. Are people more serious?
Films such as Lord Of the Rings shows characters fighting a constant uphill battle. It is a case now where filmmakers feel the need to insert humour in some places simply to break up the tension and not make the film too dark. It is a case that recent films involve more serious issues than films from a decade ago?
Comedy films are not declining, showing that people still have sence of humour, but some people seem to prefer darker, more serious films. What will future films be like? Will they get even darker? Is the trend because people relate easier to realistic films? Why do people like seeing characters struggle through hard times?
