Movies considered "classics" that aren't that great

Napoleon Dynamite is excruciatingly bad. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate that movie! If I see one more person wearing moonboots and saying "God!" I'm gonna start cracking some skulls. There. It's out. I can still remember being ostracized for not liking it when it first came out in 2004 everybody else at school was quoting it and talking about how great they all thought it was and I was the only person saying "Okay, it sucks".

P.S.

John Heder can't act worth ****! He's the same in every movie.

The problem is, the whole "classic" thing has in many cases become as much a burden as it is an honor to a movie to be called that. The word creates such a myth and expectations around a movie that it becomes almost impossible for it to live up to. No matter how praised a movie is, you´ll always have some who don´t like it, and it´s always possible to find flaw in any movie, it depends on a lot of things, personal tastes, etc.

Of all four movies I listed I can respect the filmmakers behind them and the technical aspect.
I really like Hitchcock but mainly because I read alot of spoilers on the internet for the movie Psycho it wasn't exciting for me. I knew all the twists so I couldn't get into it.

I haven't seen Psycho in so long....

I watched about forty minutes of The Birds but I got so annoyed by the leading characters and it was so slow and boring I just had to turn it off.

Agreed

Once Upon A Time in The West has three or four brilliant scenes but I don't like the actors and it was just too long. It didn't keep my interest.

This film made me fall in love with Peter Fonda because he's just so evil. I like Leone style, I've grow very fond of film-makers who appriciate the power of a slow film, mainly because it goes against everything I grew up on. Leone builds tension by created unease in the audience by taking his god-damn time, teh first 15 minutes is god-damn brilliance, I love the characters, I love how none of them are good, but there are some better than others. Personally I like Once Upon a Time in the West better than Good the Bad and the Ugly.

I thought Once Upon A Time in America was too long aswell. Plus I didn't have any sympathy for the main characters. It had too many sexual scenes too. Usually that doesn't really bother me but it got really, really tiresome in this one.

I'm a big fan of movies that cover huge portions of a character's life so I found it fascinating but it's a valid point...

Don't get me wrong, I love Leone, and I also love the fact that he takes his time. But I couldn't get into OUATITW because the actors don't really interest me, look at the Good the Bad and the Ugly that one is pretty long to but I LOVE the actors and their characters in it. One of my all-time favorite movies.

I think this thread would be better titled as "If you are ignorant and have no real business criticizing film..this is your thread."

WHich is interesting since that was my problem with Good the Bad and the Ugly, I just like the actors of Once Upon Time in the West, but if anything that'd be my main complaint is the films are very similar, I haven't seen the other two... So it's really your preference.

everyone thinks at least one movie sucks. someone else thinks that movie is great. case and point. All the people who jumped on me for hating ghost world.

i didn't like it either

I don't understand why some of you are mentioning as "classics" movies like Napoleon Dynamite  THAT'S NOT A CLASSIC!

^ I agree. I should warn you, agreeing with me is not popular at the moment. You might want to think twice before you speak. Hero is after my blood for saying that I disliked that movie, and some guy in another thread is fairly miffed too. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Yeah, stick to what is generally considered a classic. As I said earlier, a year old film can't be considered classic. If you want to criticize Napoleon Dynamite, Batman Begins, New Coke or what ever, then make your own thread for it. This thread is for criticizing movies found on legitimate greatest lists like the AFI 100 years 100 Movies, 1001 Movies you need to see before you die and Classic Coke.

For example, I found Easy Rider 2 hours of hairy hippies dancing while tripping on LSD, in other words, unwatchable.

I disliked the quintessential John Wayne movie, Stagecoach. It's so silly. I mean some chick has a 20" waist, has a "condition" and gives birth to a 6 month old baby. And don't give me some BS about the time it was made. The same year it came out, the far superior Destry Rides Again had the stalwart Jimmy Stewart ruffing up drunks, degenerates and ****es. It didn't mince its words while Stagecoach is filled with naive euphemisms.

But then again, you've probably never seen any classics worth noting.
