I was reading the G.I. Joe toyfair thing earlier about how Scarlett and Baroness would both have romance subplots respectively, and while I know they did in the books and series, it got me thinking about movies we've enjoyed that didn't have a romantic angle. Most big blockbusters usually feature the hero with a romantic lead by the end or during, but can you think of a flick where there was just drama by way of the events unfolding, and not due to a little romantic comedy/drama subplot? I can't think of any. :o

Several. My favourite film of all time is Lawrence of Arabia and it doesn't have a single woman in a speaking role.

Yeah, you got me there. I wasn't even thinking about that one.

Spielberg is not big on romance. A lot of Spielberg movies usually have men who are already married or divorced.

Kubrick films also don't exactly have romance in them

2001
Dr. Strangelove
Clockwork Orange

Hell I don't even think Eyes Wide Shut really had one either.

Eyes Wide Shut had romance for the people that like to slowly burn their significant other with hot carnuba wax.

Its been too long since I've seen that film. :( Also let throw out David Lean's other classic film, Bridge over the River Kwai!

Black Hawk Down
Gettysburg
Hamburger Hill
Patton
Sanjuro
The Thing
Tora Tora Tora!
Yojimbo

Speilberg doesn't dwell on it, which may be why some of his feel a little more authentic (like in Jaws, Schindler's List, Munich even between Alan Grant and Ellie in Jurassic Park). Indiana Jones had silly fun romances because they were intended to be serial-like i9n nature.

Anyway a few greats off the top of my head,

Glory
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
(insert almost any war movie here)

Y'know there are few movies that do not have romantic relationships whether already married, suffering from lonliness, divorce or even the notice of no romance in life being present, which would include 2 of those three war movies I just named. It is impossible in life for there not to be something there as companionship and love (or the lack thereof) exists in all our lives.

GI Joe is a Sommers movie so expect really tacky love stories (The Mummy worked because Weiz was smart and she and Fraiser played it for laughs). BTW wasn't Scarlett with Duke in the show (or hinted at)? In the movie it looks like he'll be after The Baroness due to star names.

Also it's a summer blockbuster and those always have romantic subplots.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...no romance there, just greed.

And how about Deliverence?..oh wait, there is some steamy pig squeeling. lol

true the first jeepers creepers didn't have one, but the second did, the way the creeper licked the window was oddly sexual.

I was gonna say the Die Hard series but wasn't he's wife involved in the first three and in four his daughter and matt ferrel, plus in three and four the bad guys had girlfriends

A better question may be which was the last summer blockbuster without a romantic subplot. The most recent I can think of is Burton's Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, but there is probably something more recent.

It is quite true that your standard mindless fluff will often insert romance into films where it doesn't really fit.

I thought the terminator and sarah connor had something going on.....

......That's a joke.
