MTV will observe its 25th birthday on Tuesday, but apparently USA Today is devoting more attention to that milestone today (Friday) than the cable network itself will. The newspaper dedicates three pages of its Life section to the anniversary, including "25 key moments" in MTV history. Asked about plans for an on-air celebration, MTV music group chief Van Toffler remarked, "We're not a reflective organization." USA Today commented: "Most of the channel's viewers weren't even alive when it launched, and for them, a reminder of its age might be a turnoff."

It seems out of character for MTV to not want to pat itself on the back.

well I didnt plan a big 25th birthday when I turned 25 so I can understand why mtv didnt.

MTV lost its relevance about 20 years ago.

My guess is that MTV doesn't want to remember the past, because that means they may actually have to show some music videos.

MTV shows music videos...in the early morning. I think from 3 am to 10 am. (same with MTV 2 and VH1) They should show music videos during the day when a lot of people aren't sleeping.

So there won't be a day long Next marathon to celebrate!?!11one! :down

That they aren't 'reflective' is bull****. They had a whole big thing on their twentieth birthday that I remember watching. There were people who'd been popular at different points in MTV's history performing (Billy Idol, Jane's Addiction, Salt N' Pepa, one of the ZZ Top guys, Rob Halford), plus occasional appearances by Beavis and Butthead, reflecting on the history of MTV.

There's practically a Next marathon everyday on MTV.

I cant remember the last time I actually watched the damn channel

If MTV remembers the past, then they may discover that at one time they were actually good.

I've always hated that guy. There's nothing cool about him at all so WTF is he doing on MTV? (I may have just answered my own question). And if you ever read movie reviews, he always rags on the better films and then comes out and supports crap that everyone else dislikes. It's pretty obvious that he's a full on schill for someone with his reviews.

What I find kinda funny about MTV is that they still have VJs, yet they only show videos 2 hours during the day (TRL, Sucker Free) and the rest late at night.

VH1 Classic is the best channel for music videos, IMO.

Didn't he s't his pants during one of the Woodstocks when they started to set things on fire? LOL

Anyways, this reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where they go on Spring Break and "MTV" is there and the VeeJay turns 25 and is escorted out for being too old.

damn skippy....when exactly did Mtv start sucking? Well over a decade now?

What is there to celebrate?

Oh, look we're 25 years old now and we don't even play music videos, which is what made us popular in the first place! Now it's all reality show garbage. How about another lame ass Pimp My Ride marathon or a marathon of Punk'd to celebrate the 25th year of MTV.

Who plays music videos anymore? Isn't all supposed to be reality television now?
