In Kingdome Come, Supe's has his classic symbol initially. He only swaps to the KC symbol after the DP attack and Lois dies. But Ross didn't just use the same shield and swap the gold out for black. There's more to the design then that. I think this Reddit comment nails what Ross was going for;
Which is always how I've interpreted it. Its stripped back because that Supes had lost so much. It makes no sense on young Superman.
I know we've all done a 180 on the suit with the set pictures, I have as well... but that shield.... It looks less like a symbol, and more like a corporate logo.
The more set photos I see, the more I'm fine with the suit. I like the colors, the belt, the trunks. But that S is atrocious. And no, being inspired by the Kingdom Come S doesn't make it good. Because the Kingdom Come S is bad too. There, I said it.
They even brought my beloved yellow cape S, after so many years. But for it to be used on this S (more of a bar, it's not an S). I just don't understand why they would use any other S style other than the traditional one.
I've always hated the KC logo, and it will never not bug me that it was used for this film, especially with the context you laid out.
Gunn is embracing so many of the cheesier elements of the costume any how, so why not use a more traditional looking S. Blows my mind.
While I've grown to be okay with the suit, I still think he tried to mash up too many elements of different suits.
I've also started accepting the unexpected aspects of the suit and actively loving it - the colors and form - from certain angles in the set pics. The one thing that's still an eyesore is the shoulder pads.
I'm telling y'all, the material makes all the difference. The reason I didn't like the New 52 suit was because it was armor, and that collar looked incredibly formal/elitist. Which doesn't fit Supes at all. When you remove the "armor" aspect, suddenly, instead of looking elitist, the collar looks cozy. Like winter wear. It changes the resulting effect from "cold and alienating" to "warm and huggable." That's perfect for Superman imo.After having drawn the suit, I've come around quite a bit. 2 things that I used to dislike, the collar and shoulder lines, are now some of my favorite parts of the suit. It really does make the New 52 look work, which is crazy to me cuz I don't care for the way it looks in comics and toys. I like the flow of the lines on his torso, I just wish it were a lil more simplified. I think the boots are my favorite part of the suit, along with the colors. Still wish the fit were a bit more snug but it does make him more approachable. Also still wish the "S" crest were more unique but I admire the thematic resonance. Can't wait to see it in action!
Yeah, that's what I call 'realism' 😅
The others make sense, but that’s a massive stretch on the influence from Alex Ross lol. The lines are much more New-52 than Ross.
