I take pictures for our local paper of old mills, bridges, etc., which gets posted on their site. I've been using a point-and-shoot, albeit high qualty camera for awhile, and finally got a Digital SLR. Here are just a few pics I've taken with it. Hope this is the right place, as it doesn't have anything to do with comic books or the like.

nice shots though they seem a little dark in the exposure dept for my taste (not like I know anything about photography).

I have a question though. When you're taking shots of people during daylight and you don't want shadows, esp under the chins and whatnot, is a flash good enough or would you need more lighting coming from different angles?

it should be OK if you aren't doing anything like a fashion shoot :)

can i post pics too? :D
but i don't have a DSLR though :(

The best answer is that sunlight is the worst enemy. You can use a fill flash or move the subject under a shade. If possible, use a large white piece of poster or something similiar and have it angled so that the sunlight reflects so that shadows are dispersed or hidden from the camera.

If you're indoors, move the subject near a window that doesn't have indirect lightning. The light should be diffused enough not to cast harsh shadows which is BAD for portraits of people.

BTW...I am pretty new at DSLRs so I know I still have a lot to learn, especially in regards to lighting and exposure.

Great advice  I'll try that next time. I'm still using an old Nikon SLR and the pic quality is great. I've been thinking about upgrading to a digital D80 or something affordabel along those lines. I've also heard good things about the Canon Rebel XT. What's your cam?

Thanks!

The D80 is a GREAT DSLR and one I would have got if I had the money. I had to use my tax money to get a D40, which is the cam I used to get the shots. I got a really great deal on it with a zoom lens. I basically got all of that for about 1/4 of what I would have spent on a D80 with accessories, but like I said, if I could afford it, the D80 would be what I would own right now.

Nice shots, thanks for sharing. They look good.

My girlfriend took this while on vacation a couple years ago, we have it framed in the house, I always thought it was a great shot.

i'll do one, although this is his photography thread
hope you don't mind but i could use some opinions on my shots from people who know a thing or two (not expects because it would feel awkward and it would make me feel small:o )

Nice what camerea do you use?

Thanks Showtime, and indeed, that's a great boat pic!

Hey cyberfaust, if I don't mind for you to post in my photography thread, I hope you don't mind some comments. :woot:

They are great pics, with great subjects. If I were taking the photos, this is what I would have done:

Pic 1 - Not much different, although it looks like the sun overexposed the top of your shot. I would have probably used a neutral density filter, or crop the pic a little.
Pic 2 - Great shot. I love those kind of panoramic pics. I might have included the sun, but thats my preference.
Pic 3 - Another great subject, but I would have left some breathing room on either side of the shot, so you see the entire boat. That I think would have opened your picture up a little.
Pic 4 - I've learned that you don't want the horizon to be the center. I used to do that myself. You want either the sky to extend 2/3 down or the ground to extend 2/3 up, depending on which is more interesting. I think since your subject is in the center and not really the sky or ground, you can get away with it. I might have made the shot symmetrical, but again, that's my preference.

Karem-Knight, I use a Nikon D40, with either a 55mm or a 200mm lens.

Here are some experimental shots I took with my point and shoot. I don't know if I have posted these here before.

Hopefully I'll be able to go somewhere soon. Most of these pics are taken around the house because a) I am trying to learn my camera and b) I haven't been able to go anywhere where there are lots of photo opportunities.

some very nice work you've got there, i do photography at college and hopefully as a job when my degree finishs withen a month or so. but this is your thread so i wont post them

thanks for the comments. I really like the simplicity of the feather one :)
