From Newsarama:
Aside from his Civil War work, Mark Millars been pretty quiet recently, although thats changing a touch as he contacted Newsarama seeking some help in raising money for a worthy cause. We could explain more, but well just hand it over to Millar
"I've been snowed at work lately and it means I haven't had time to arrange any Millarworld auctions for a couple of months. As our regulars know, the funds from these auctions go to a hospital in London, but this is a one-off and a little different. The funds raised here will pay for Scottish kids to compete in the Special Olympics next year and my brother asked if I could maybe help raise some cash to help them out with their expenses. Unlike me, my brother Bobby actually plays a valuable role in society and works with special needs children every day. He's trying a number of ways to raise funds (as you can see from the press release below) and I thought this seemed like a perfect opportunity for the famously generous comic-book community to help these kids out. We've raised thousands of pounds for St George's, but our first auction fell prey to a technical glitch as we were finding our feet and so I'd like to present that same offer again. Bid now for a chance to name the lead character in Kick-@$$, the new creator-owned book by me and John Romita Jr. It launches from Marvels Icon imprint in late Spring 07 and should be huge. This is your chance to name a character who has the potential to be exploited as a comic-book, a video-game, toys and a movie for years to come. And it's all going to a great cause."
And over to Marks brother for the cause
Next summer Shanghai will host the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games and, in so doing, China will become the first country in Asia to host this event. We are proud to note that five pupils and former pupils from Rutherglen High will be among the 200 UK athletes chosen to participate in these games.
The cost of selecting, preparing, kitting and sending a team to these World Games will be in the region of £2,000 per head. Unfortunately, much of the cost is borne by the local athletes. Consequently, in order to ensure that our athletes and their families do not have to bear the burden of fundraising to raise this fee we are seeking to secure sponsorships and in-kind donations over the coming months.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Robert Millar
