Yeah. I don't know if I agree that I would have compared him to Hakeem, but thought he was around a Ewing level player. Ewing actually surprised me when I saw how good he was offensively. Coming out of college, I didn't see that. Olajuwon, however, I thought was otherworldly. Even when Georgetown beat Houston way back when, Hakeem was unreal....dude looked like he had springs in his shoes. I think a case could be made that the Rockets made the right pick.I get that Portland drafted for need and Sam Bowie was as dominant a center as Hakeem or any of the other collegiate greats in the 80ās aside from maybe Ewing. He just had the bad fortune of a gruesome leg injury immediately into his career and he was a punchline after that. But had he remained healthy who knows what wouldāve happened.
I mean, yeah, you draft Jordan over him, no question with the benefit of hindsight. But it isnāt really fair to call him a bust and one of the worst draft choices in history, as he was as canāt miss a prospect on paper as you could get. But thereās no crystal ball in the scout sheet to predict broken legs with significant damage.
