Add Neal McDonough to the list of cast for Captain America: The First Avenger, the Joe Johnston-directed film that will star Chris Evans. McDonough is in talks to play Dum Dum Dugan. Marvel Studios was playing dum on it. Production starts in July in the U.K. and the film will be released by Paramount Pictures July 22, 2011. Hugo Weaving plays the villain, Red Skull. Sebastian Stan and Hayley Atwell have also been set. McDonough is available, as he famously exited the series Scoundrels because of his reluctance to do love scenes.

Most excellent! The cast is rounding out nicely.

Well he's a decent cast member, but I don't know that he really seems like Dum Dum. He's not quite stout or burly enough. He actually seems more like the Sentry, and even the Marvel Legends figure looks like him.

saw the news a little while ago. A good actor, so i am curious to see what they are going to do with the character.

I wonder if they're putting Dum Dum in Cap, to give S.H.I.E.L.D a presence in Cap since obviously Fury wouldn't even be born at the time.

Yes he would. Nick Fury was around during WW2.

616 Fury fought in WWII as Sgt. Fury (along with his "Howling Commandos") Not sure if the Movieverse Fury will share the same history.

This should be interesting. Maybe Dugan will take on Fury's role.

Fury fought in WW2 didn't he?
ya, in the comics, but, idk... I mean for him to of been old enough in the 40s to fight in the war, he'd have to be like in his 80s now...

I'm guessing he won't look quite like the Dum Dum from the comics that we know, since he would've been much younger back then. They'll probably lose the handlebar moustache and bowler hat I imagine. Won't he be dead though by the present day or at least very old? Neal McDonough is probably in his 40s already.

True but Fury had taken the Infinity serum which slowed his aging process. Not sure if that'll be followed in the Marvel movie universe. Maybe they'll have him be the recipient of an later version of the super soldier serum. And with Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury, it could be subtle nod to the Captain America Truth: Red, White & Black storyline, in which black soldiers were used in experiments to recreate the super soldier serum.

hope this is just a rumor. dum dum deserves better

That's more what I was getting at. If Sam Jackson just shows up telling Cap, "I'm here to talk to you about the Avenger initiative," back in 1945 people will get confused.

I did have a thought that they could do an after credits scene with them finding Cap's frozen body in the ice in present day with Fury and Agent Coleson leading the search.

Why? Neal McDonough is a great actor, and one of the more underrated in Hollywood. Marvel can't just go out and cast Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio in every feature they're going to have or this film will have a 300 million dollar budget.

They've got Tommy Lee Jones for their A-list actor. Marvel is being smart by trying to recruit talented people without the major price tag associated with A list stars.

I've liked Neal McDonough ever since Star Trek: First Contact, where he took a bit role and turned it into something memorable.

Neal played a good soildger in Band of Brothers, he has a solid old school look, he works well in this roll IMO

It'd be cool if the MCU Dum Dum took Fury's role, since they don't seem interested in going with the Infinity Formula route.

In a recent Collider interview, Feige was talking about getting one "by" a movie, IM being that a guy could really build a suit of armor in a cave with a box of scraps and escape, TIH being that a guy could get gamma irradiated and turn into a big green monster, IM2 being that a Russian greasemonkey could recreate the same thing Stark did in the first also with hardly any resources, Thor being that another world exists with ours and we just haven't discovered it yet, and Cap being that a guy could get injected with this crazy serum and be frozen for decades and be ok. He felt adding another by with the Infinity Formula in Cap may be a little much.

Thanks for that Bad Superman. Now I'm craving some gum gum. :p

I like McDonough as an actor, so I see it as yet another quality addition.

Can I just say how amused I am that the guy was actually one of the top choices for Cap on here for a while a couple of years ago, and now he's playing Dum Dum.

I guess no one who suggested him as Steve Rogers ever saw this coming, eh?

in the Ultimate Origins book, Fury is one of the test experiments for the Super Soldier experiment. It seemingly looks like something went wrong and that he died, but he actually escaped and didn't age that much into modern times.

and Fury tells Tony Stark that he knew his father in Iron Man 2. So who knows?

Howard Stark was around his 50's in those film clips from the '70's. Jackson's Fury would have been in his 30's in the '70's without any slowed aging, so them knowing each other doesn't really mean Fury was active in WWII in the filmverse

well we dont know for sure if sam jackson's fury is or isnt going to be in ww2. For me personally i still say leave fury in present day. And it was said before the howling commandos might not have that big of a role in the film so dum dum and the others could jsut be some soliders we see fighting with cap/invaders for a few scenes. But who knows.
