Neil Blompkamp's Chappie

I've seen the trailers, and it just looks so... unappealing. I get where Blomkamp's coming from, but his movies are relentlessly the same in terms of tone and themes. District 9 was wonderful, but I hated Elysium.

It's his wheelhouse, like I said. I do hope he takes on a different subject and in a different country one day since he does have talent, but if that's what he wants to convey, whatever.

So is this movie South Africa's version of Robocop?

I'm surprised about the rating too. I figured the story would be good for younger audiences as well.

My 7-year-old nephew saw the poster in the theater when we took him to see Big Hero 6 a few weeks ago, and he thought it was another Real Steel movie.

That would've been preferable to Chappie.

This has a 70/100 on Critics Choice so far. A decent start. Im really looking forward to it. Love the music in that clip, very different for Hans Zimmer.

I think i have an issue with Neill paying more attention to Alien than talking more about Chappie!

I think what's going to happen is that Chappie will come and go. It'll be better than Elysium but not up to the high standards of D9. But the problem is that, it's hard not to compare each movie to each other due to: them being made by the same dude, and importantly, all three having the same themes, with similar settings.

I think Neill knew this and hence why he pitched his Alien idea to the world.

Chappie's a He-Man fan. :)

Not all movies in the same genre directed by the same director have to be equally good. If it can entertain and has enough good stuff in it then that doesn't necessarily make it bad.

D9 was so original and awesome that it was always going to be hard for Neill to knock it out of the park again atleast in sci-fi genre. The thing you have to also remember is that that movie came out of nowhere and took everyone by surprise.

I would have liked Neill to try a different genre. But he is tackling sci-fi again albeit an established franchise.

There is a reason why James Cameron is so successful. He has done every genre possible and not piegon holed himself into specific genre. Same with Steven Spielberg and to some degree Ridley.

My old man wants to see this, we'll probably check it out on the weekend.

Uhm...James Cameron? Are you serious? most of his films have been withing the science fiction genre, only ones that didn't fall within that genre were True Lies and Titanic, not counting the documentaries he made of course.

Yes. There has been plenty of genres Jimbo hasn't touched. What's that about?

Should have been more clear. What I meant was Neill sci fi films have the same dirty gritty dusty look to them and set in South Africa. And all of them are strictly sci fi action films

JamesC

Terminator - sci fi, thriller, horror
T2 - sci fi , action
Abyss - sci fi, drama, adventure
True lies - comedy, action
Titanic - romance, drama, adventure
Avatar - sci fi, fantasy, action, adventure, romance

You see what I mean?

His Sci-fi films are far more varied in terms of themes and ideas. Yes. But they are not different genres.

BTW, why is Avatar romance and not The Terminator? Same for the Abyss for that matter?

Finally some info about Zimmer's soundtrack.
Varese Sarabande said:
Varèse Sarabande is thrilled to be releasing the soundtrack to Sony Pictures’ CHAPPIE, the latest score by the legendary Hans Zimmer. This is Zimmer’s first all-electronic soundtrack since the 1980s, when he first developed his ground-breaking style. CHAPPIE is the new film from the director of DISTRICT 9 and stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. Varèse Sarabande’s exclusive release of CHAPPIE will be released March 17th on CD, with pre-order information coming soon. The digital album will be available at iTunes, Amazon and elsewhere beginning March 9th in Europe and March 10th in the U.S.
