Neil Blompkamp's Chappie

I saw some positive reviews out there as well, just seems like it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, seeing several reviews mentioning that Chappie himself is not likable makes me wonder if we've seen the same movie.

Yeah sounding similar to Elysium at the moment, still think I shall see for myself this weekend, was just hoping for a bit more positive news going in but it is what it is I guess. At least it should be visually good to look at, Blompkamps style and effects are usually impressive although I am worried that he just has the one style and all his films will end up looking the same and set in South Africa.

This movie doesn't look like it will get glowing praise, but I don't think this really has any effect on the Alien project. Sure Elysium and this are not District 9. Oh well. I still am excited to see what he comes up with for Alien.

To be fair, Elysium wasn't shot in South Africa (rather in Mexico City as a placeholder for Future LA). But again, it looks just like the shanty towns of District 9, and now Chappie.

Yeah if it wasnt South Africa it still looked damn similar, I only saw the movie once so clearly have forgotten some details about it. Hopefully he's saving his best for Alien 5 anyway.

I'm actualy fine with that, there are so many science fiction films focusing on "First World countries", using the settings he does isn't a bad idea at all, it opens up a whole new world of oportunities, but he does need some better screenwriters to properly translate his ideas to the screen.

This movie cost 49 million dollars according to Variety.

That's not a bad budget, it's not like Sony sunk 175 million into it. *coughJupiterascendingcough*

Yeah I'm all for diversity as much as the next person, just make sure it is diverse and not ending up feeling the same every time, which eventually it would do whether it be first world, third world or which ever world. I'm just concerned Blompkamp may pigeon hole himself and would be good to see him do something in a different setting, I guess with Alien we will get that or at least I assume so lol.

Yeah this is more of a Neill Blomkamp problem than a diversity/social problem.

I liked both Elysium and District 9. I will most likely like this too.

I guess I don't understand what makes Blomkamp 'lazy' for setting his films in the country he's from. Not that much different from a zillion other filmmakers setting theirs in New York City and the like. Seems more like it's a problem for audience members who haven't seen much of the country otherwise to act like it's a motif he can't stop doing.

BTW, I was so confused on how there was so much hype about Die Antoord being in the film, and thus far, they've been barely featured in the trailers and ads. Also, they're not participating with the press tour.

This is why: Ninja (the dude) was a complete A-Hole on set and a nightmare to work with.

I was kind of surprised to see them at first , much less as more than a cameo . I didn't even know they were still making albums.

It's not the country, it's that he seems to keep doing the same theme.

No doubt Fox are sticking him with a writer for Alien.

Which is for the best (provided it's a good writer). Blomkamp seems like he has a lot of great ideas for things, but he needs someone else to polish them off.

Damn this isnt doing so well critically. I dont know what the buzz is like to the GA. The trailers didnt really impress me and coming off Elysium I wasnt really into this.

Blomkamp made a really good movie before. I hope he can do it again soon with Alien

Jesus Christ this is getting panned so far on the level of Jupiter Ascending... nervous about his Alien movie.

This being original sci fi, crossing my fingers it does good box office.

This film is not a remake or a reboot, but there is really nothing original about it.

Third act is a mess.

I am stilling seeing this. I don't care about the critics.. stupid critics.. It's a conspiracy. Has to be. :ninja:

Critics are your greatest friend or worst enemies depending on your bias..

So the movie's rated R, I thought this would've been PG-13. Anyone know why? Violence, cursing, combo thereof? ;)
