Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I think they are sticking with 8 episodes next season. We'll see. This season really took from the first two books which are basically short story collections. Next season would conceivably start adapting the saga books, unless they want to detour with some of the short stories they didn't get to yet.

I would say no more than 10 episodes. I feel like this season could've used it. 12 I think would be too much padding.

Witcher 3 Complete Edition is in the ps store for only $15 (holiday sale). Includes all dlc stuff.

There’s many Netflix shows where it feels like they had a movie idea reconfigured into ten episodes or whatever because keeping people watching long term is better for their subscription model, but here I do think they could have used more episodes than eight to get this off the ground.

For PC gamers on gog.com (CD Project) all three Witcher games are on sale until Jan. 2nd. The sale prices are:

The Witcher - $1.49
The Witcher 2 - $2.99
The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition - $14.99

My understanding is that the first 2 Witcher games couldn't be fitted to a console, correct? I'd love if they could remaster those games for the consoles but I've heard that the games are too pc oriented to make them viable for a console. If so, that's a shame. I'd love to play them, but I'm not a pc gamer.

The Witcher 2 is on Xbox 360.

The Witcher 2 is on Xbox 360.

Which is backwards compatible on Xbox One. I actually just bought the first game just so I'm looking forward to playing it so I can experience the story as a whole for myself. Watching gameplay videos is cool but I want to experience the first Witcher game for myself and not just through somebody else.

I've also seen people say that Blaviken looks like Vizema from the first Witcher game.

Surprised they haven't been able to make Witcher 2 on the PS then.
Less that they haven't been able to, as they don't wish to use resources on it. After they tried to port the first game to disastrous results by using an outside studio, they decided that if they were going to do such ports, they'd do it themselves. And they really haven't had that kind of time over the last decade. The Witcher 3, being what it is, they probably think it wouldn't be worth the effort. I personally disagree, but I can understand that.

I talked to a CDPR producer once and they said if some fans figured out a way to port The Witcher 2 to PS4 showed it to them and it looked good, they'd approve it and release it.
Yeah, makes sense. They wanted to do it but didn’t have the resources to spare. There’s a lot of talented fans out there so who knows, maybe one day.

The Witcher 2 is actually one of the worst cases of consolitus I've seen since Deus Ex 2. While being a solid game and being a massive upgrade in the visual and storytelling department compared to the first one but because it was being ported to the 360, it's substantially smaller in it's design and feels like a 30 hour prologue to Wild Hunt but in all fairness, that's me being a PC snob. Game is good though and a much better Game of Thrones game in terms of its themes than any of the official GOT games lol

I love The Witcher 2. It is a far more straight forward then the Wild Hunt, but that worked in it's favor imo. It plays like an expanded version of stuff like Hearts of Stone, and because of that, the narrative works really well. And that is what I play these games for. To play the main narrative. Reminds me that I wish they may have taken a little less time with he open world with Witcher 3, and had instead worked on the parts of the main narrative they never got to finish. Would of helped the third act issue imo. Witcher 2 does not have that issue imo.

Just out of curiosity, now that CDPR has settled with the Witcher author with their dispute and can make more game etc. Is it possible now that the show could get the rights to use stuff from the game as well as the book in future seasons?

I can definitely see being more into the Witcher 2 if all you're into is the story. The storytelling is better there, but they leave so many plot threads dangling, I honestly thought there was going to an expansion but we got a third game instead which is why it felt like a prologue to me. I missed some of the more cRPG elements of the first game like Geralt actually needing certain information or journal entries before he could accept certain contacts etc but that comes from being raised on Planescape and Baldur's Gate. There's also a lot to be said for a game respects your time and Witcher 2 definitely does that better than the original game and Wild Hunt. I was also intimately familiar with The first game where as most people playing The Witcher 2 were not.

It's interesting to see the massive media franchise that spawned from a little janky polish RPG from 2007.

Yep. I still remember when it was mostly known as the game with the sex cards. :funny:

I finished the show today. While it could have been better I’m overall happy with that for a first season. Great to see this in live action and hopefully they can take things another step further next season. A lot of the support actors were very good and the swordplay action was solid too. Cavill totally looked the part and got better as the show went on after a questionable start.

I am 5 episodes in, and I am enjoying Geralt. I just wish Cavill wasn't so big. :funny:

I see it more like that were won't be any CDPR/Sapkowski lawsuits anytime soon and those legal matters have been resolved, and CDPR will have the option to make new products/games set in The Witcher world in the future. I wouldn't hold my breath on the show getting the rights to game material.

He's much bigger than game Geralt but I'm pretty much fine with that. He looks great as the character and his acting improves throughout the show. Plus many of the support actors I really like (eg Jaskier, Renfri, Calanthe, Tissaia).
