Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

He doesn't LOOK too bad. But I think we need to hear him before a judgement can be made.
Yeah, i expected worse.
But if he can manage to pull the character off? We will see.
I dont think Cavill himself brought a lot to the role outside of the Physical aspect, so while its weird getting used to a different actor in the role, i can see a stronger actor manage to work the character bettter.

I thought Cavill was good in the role personally. He brought a subtle tragedy to Geralt. Not sure Hemsworth can pull that off but we'll see.

They've traded one plank of wood for another. I don't expect there to be a notable difference in quality of performance, tbh. I think the only thing that will be hugely noticeable is the voice - Cavill's voice (though he was doing a sometimes cringey imitation of the videogame version's voice) fit Geralt better than Hemsworth's will. They were probably wise not to show him speaking for this "first look" lol.

My thing about Liam Hemsworth, I've seen a lot of his work at this point, and he's yet to impress me. He's a lot like Scott Eastwood. Sure they are nice guys, but they have a usual type or mold they fill, and they've never really made me believe in their work.

I've felt that way about plenty of other young up-and-coming actors who did eventually impress me over time, ie Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth probably just delivered the best performance of his career in Furiosa and he's playing against his usual type there.

It would be much easier for him if he was coming into a franchise that was going strong without any other issues but walking into something thats already on a pretty steep downward curve, it seems a lot to try and turn around and as Cavill was the one thing that people generally liked about the show it just doesnt seem likely he will be able to turn this ship around now.

It's kind of weird hearing Doug Cockle voice the Netflix Geralt, but hey happy for him to voice the character again.

I mean The Witcher games are my preferred adaptation of the material, but this is still the Netflix timeline which is quite different.

It's just kind of ironic to me that Netflix makes a Witcher animation set in the Netflix universe and gets the voice of VG Geralt to voice Netflix Geralt. However, they make a new Tomb Raider animation set in the Rise of the Tomb Raider Universe and they get Hayley Atwell to voice Lara Croft in the animated version instead of you know, Camilla Luddington, who voices her in the games.

Can I just have a cool Witcher animated series, please?

Interestingly enough, several years ago, Netflix announced a Witcher-themed animated series meant to be aimed at younger age groups. This was in 2021 right before Season 2 debuted.

EDIT:

Since the show was announced there's been no further updates on it. So it remains to be seen if it will ever see the light of day.

I really hope they stick the landing with this story, the tragedy and ending of it all legitimately made me tear up when I read it.

Not trying to be a jerk but this is why anyone knows about the books and who Geralt of Rivia at this point. It's because of the video games. I'd say a large majority of people's introduction to The Witcher was through the game series.

I realize Andrzej Sapkowski can be a bit of a grumpy curmudgeon and doubted that the games would be successful, but he really owes CD Projekt RED because they are the ones who made his book series relevant. The Witcher became a franchise because of the games.

Nah, you’re good! Haven’t played the games, so wasn’t sure how popular they were!

Really want to play them, though!

Hell, the games are why I bought the whole series and read it.

I really wish HBO or Starz had tackled the Witcher instead of Netflix.

Same here. I then became a big fan of the books and was excited for the show. But that quickly went down hill. I understand they got tired of people complaining it's not like the games. The real problem was they did a scrap job of adapting the books as well. I'm still salty over the horrible Sword of Destiny adaptation.
