Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Those choices seem more akin to a feature film or Netflix original movie than a series.

Well look who they just cast as Geralt of Rivia. An actor who was primarily doing big movies and hasn't done TV since 2010.

Also, it's not like Mads Mikkelsen is above doing TV. Look at Hannibal. TV has gotten very ambitious and with feature level production values in recent years.

I don't see why some see this as a step down for Cavill TV has been producing way better quality than movies in the past 10 years [GOT, Westworld , BrBd etc.] I just hope Netflix don't strip down the material to make it more "mainstream" cause if that's the way they thinking then they already failed

Ask Grace Randolph ;)

If anything, this could be a step up for his career. Instead of playing a hero who is not supposed to be a dark, brooding loner, he can now play a hero who actually IS more of a dark, brooding loner.

And I truly believe if they play their cards right, this show could be huge. It will all depend on execution, but whatever.

Let's not pretend Cavill was winning Oscars. :p

especially with the void after GOT airs it's last episodes they could really take advantage but with all properties it has to have the right creative behind it

I still think Inhumans can be a successful property but look what happened to that when the creative behind this didn't give a dam about it

i used to like her videos, but she has become really annoying.
she really doesnt get how TV evolved, and says only actors with bad BO results and need to reinvent themselves go there.
thats such a load of crap. emma stone is on netflix. or just look at the cast of big little lies, they got meryl streep this season. actors should go where great stories are. and that seems to be what cavill is doing.
and her argument that amy adams was just after prestige with sharp obects.. well duh, who doesnt want to be appreciated for being good at what they do. shes just rambling and acting like she knows everything.

and we all agree that they have to keep Charles Dance as Emhyr if they use that character in the series

Dandelion - I would love for Alfie Allen to play that role
Yennefer - I already stated Hathaway would be perfect but that is a pipe dream
Triss Merigold - Karen Gilan

I mean prestige projects are called prestige projects for a reason. Are actors supposed to not want to do those?

Think sebastian stan will be dandelion. He's rumoured to be in this isn't he?

There's a rumor he auditioned for something but I saw where it originated and its hard for me to put a lot of stock into it.

Sebastian Stan would be awesome in whatever but I got my heart set on Theon for that lol

Geralt needs the cat eyes. If they dump that then I'm not watching the show. There are some things I will be unyielding over.

I don't think Cavill needs an American accent as Geralt, and I'd rather he not use one.

I think some hardcore fans were hoping for someone like Mads Mikkelsen, who Sapkowski once said he sees as Geralt, or Nikolaj Coster Waldau. Both choices were unrealistic.

My main choice was Zach McGowan. At least he expressed interest in playing the character.

As for the casting, to be perfectly honest, IMHO, Geralt is NOT a hard role to play. He's Mr. Gruff Tough Witcher. Rough and gruff on outside, but on the inside he's a gentle soul with a heart of gold who cares for his friends and loved ones. Others have already mentioned this here.

I mean look, Cavill has already had tons of practice playing the dark brooding loner as Supes, right? :D

Why would he have an American accent anyway? Does Geralt have one in the games?

I agree. Honestly, I'm much more engaged by TV shows than I am in most films these days because they give you more of a chance to get to know a cast of characters. TV has gotten so good in this regard that oftentimes, films feel rushed to me and I find myself less likely to connect to characters unless they are written really, really well. If this is good, it could really be a smart career move for Cavill.

did people say the same thing about Bateman last year with Ozark I mean his movies make a profit and are well receive so why would he "step down" btw Ozark is amazing to those who haven't seen it and he is getting praise for it and his "movie" career is still healthy so these critics of these moves how bout you do something other than youtube vids and maybe i'll give u the time of day lol

If I was a film actor I wouldn't be doing TV, except for roles like this. Where you can be the lead in something that could be big and is something very much down your street.

I see. But regardless, I think Cavill should use his English accent here.

Considering he's struggling with the accent, I agree. The thing is, though, they probably need Wolf school witchers to have the same accent. After all, they're taken as babies/kids.

Awesome!

Honestly, if I were an actor right now, I'd rather book a big-budget Netflix series than a big-budget movie.

Last few years I feel same. Most movies become fun popcorn cashgrab CGI flicks to forget on 2 hours and move on till next one. All hail to exceptions. TV on other side is where stories are, where characters live, where you get to know them and connect to them. You can spend 10+ hours with them instead just two. And given competition this days on TV, from Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. People will choose to watch only good ones.

I will argue TV>Movies this days. Specially TV shows which can afford budget wise cinematic scenes.
