Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Its hard to compare it to any early Netflix show, because that was before they decided 2-3 seasons worth of content was "enough". That that is where shows "peak" and wouldn't be attracting new viewers.

Yes but cancelling a show can lose subscribers.

i was thinking 5 season MAX... 7 would be getting way too filler like..... that other show that had nearly 3 full seasons of filler episodes

It's definitely a problem with Netflix shows. It's why I can't get too excited about Hissrich talking about a plan for 7 seasons.

Yeah, I feel like this show will be lucky to get to 3 seasons, let alone 7. And that's just because of how Netflix is with content in general. Then again, they spent copious amounts of money on crappy movies that no one likes, so who knows? Maybe they see that much potential here. I'm 50/50 on this so far. I think the visuals look good and I like some of what I'm seeing of the performances but I could also see this turning out poorly. It's a little troubling that Cavill is the only recognizable actor in the cast. I know whenever one of these properties get adapted, you always have fans coming out of the woodwork to declare that role should go to an unknown actor, but even GoT, LotR, etc. had plenty of recognizable talent among the unknowns. Aside from Henry, the only other actor I know from anything is Lars Mikkelsen, and while I love him, he seems to only have a recurring role (I actually didn't even know he was in it at all until just looking up the cast right now).

Anyway, perhaps having an almost full cast of unknowns will prove to be a good thing but it also makes me a little worried. I know the age of the movie star is more or less gone but I know that if I see a show or a movie advertised and there's an actor or two in it that I've seen do good work in other projects, it certainly makes me more interested in it. You can even see it here; I guarantee that this thread wouldn't be as active as it is if someone other than Cavill was playing the lead role, as he has a lot of fans here from his time playing Superman.

In terms of the cast, MyAnna Buring is playing Tissaia, and she's fantastic. Plus she also voiced a character in the game. Ripper Street was one of my favorite shows, so I'm happy she's in the show.

Also, Lars Mikkelsen is playing Stregobor. We just have seen nothing of him in the trailers.

Looking forward to Tissaia, she seems to have had her role expanded considerably in comparison to the books, I hope Stregobor has a larger role as well, if it's just the smallish role it is in the books it'll feel like a bit of a waste of an actor like Mikkelsen.

Loving Ciri pics. Plus Chalotra at her most "Yennefer" yet.

The Nilfgaardian armor just managed to actually become even worse, thankfully Cahir and the Nilfgaardian army probably won't get very much screentime this season, they can fix it for season 2 and just ignore that this "armor" ever existed. How that costume got drawn, approved, built, and approved again is beyond me, the quality difference between it and every single other costume we've seen on the show so far is staggering.

like i was half joking.... but it really does look like a dog turd drying in the sun

go ahead... photoshop mr hankys face on there... go on do it... do it. .....

do it

Poor Eamon. They picked a great actor for the role and dressed him in... that.

When adapting material, I understand changes and compromises have to be made. It comes with the territory of adapting existing material.

I can overlook and accept many things. Very many things. In terms of costuming, I think there's quite a bit that this show has gotten right.

But I cannot abide or accept this. I spit on this. I hate this with every fiber of my being. I disrespect it and everything that it stands for and every decision that came together that allowed it to come into being. This is not it.

He looks like an utter nincompoop. Sapkowski very clearly described how this armor and helm should come off in the book. It does NOT look like this. I don't know how this even reached the build stage. It's an utter disgrace. There's a lot I can let go for The Witcher. But I cannot let go of turning Cahir into this.

Dark Helmet had a more intimidating costume. This is...an abomination. This is worse than movie Sonic the Hedgehog.

I had to google "nincompoop".

Inconsistency in the production is quite jarring. Some costumes and armors are really nice. Some look like straight from games, and then we have this. Why.... I'm still hoping in motion with actual cinematography, music and storytelling it will be better than out of context photo, but... Good design is good on stills too.

Considering Geralt and Yen don't meet like they do in the Last Wish, it makes me wonder if they're even going to do the wish. If they don't in my opinion that's a big change to the story. I don't even understand why you would change the way Geralt and Yen meet in the first place. To be honest the Last Wish being brought to life was one of the thing I was most looking forward to. The Last Wish along with the Sword of Destiny were the two stories I was most looking forward to and we're not getting them. Well at least not in a more faithful adaptation. I also get changed have to be made at times but it seems for a production that went on and on about the show being based on the books that was really just about not being a adaptation of the games.

I'm sorry but the Nilfgaardian armor is trash. I know that's being harsh but I don't know how you look at that and think it looks good. Even if you don't want Nilfgaard at the height of power there are better ways to design their armor. I get not doing the wings on the helmets because I can see the upkeep of the helmets being difficult and costly. I just don't get it. And what I'm about to say may be a little over dramatic but it seems like the more I hear the more I wonder if the show runner actually understands the material.

And the thing is for me my agrivation comes from the lack of faithfulness to the books and has really nothing to do with the games. The one area the games and specifically the Witcher 3 does influence my interpretation is the look of the world. The Witcher 3 has this bright and colorful look to it and the show seems to be going with the stereotypical boring full and gray mid evil look. I truly want to love the show and get on the internet and go on about how wrong I was but my doubts are growing and growing.

If they don't do the genie, this show can go **** itself.

That's actually no reason to exclude the wings though. The Lord of the Rings trilogy did them for hundreds of Numenorean extras for the War of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, which is a single scene and the costumes aren't used again, so it's no excuse. Cahir is a major character and his armour at least should look better.

I mean some of those other stills look good. I just want to know what was the thought and decision making process for the Nilfgaard armor. Like I want to know if anyone objected and said "OK...but..."

So considering there are some good costumes and armor sets in the show, I just want to know how we ended up with this. It's mind boggling.
