Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I’m glad they’ve got long term plans at least and are thinking ahead. Now they just need to start with a bang and keep up the quality.
Another good thing we have a finished book series, so they won't need to improvise. Of course they will expand some stuff, but the core is already there.

Yes, that’s a big plus. If they start well they are guaranteed to have a good basis of material to see them through till the end.

I've never read the books or played the games either, and while I'm not impressed by what I've seen, I'm always down for a good fantasy show if the story/characters/world-building deliver. And all that's hard to glean from the trailers, so I'm in 100% wait-and-see mode.

since people cant watch more than one show a week lol
It's less that and now the comparisons it is going to have to deal with, and the fact that Disney+ already has 2m more subscribers then analyst thought they would by the end of the year. Netflix has started losing subscribers and Disney+ is not going to help that. Especially during the holiday season.

That's actually no reason to exclude the wings though. The Lord of the Rings trilogy did them for hundreds of Numenorean extras for the War of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, which is a single scene and the costumes aren't used again, so it's no excuse. Cahir is a major character and his armour at least should look better.

I'll be completely honest I have little to no knowledge of what goes into taking care of props. I was just saying with my very limited knowledge I could understand that being a reason not to have the wings. I completely agree the Nilfgaardian armor should look better. I even think the Nilfgaardian officers could of had the wings to be a visual show of rank of they didn't want every Nilfgaardian to have them. If the armor isn't changed for future seasons they either don't understand the description of the armor, don't care or think it looks good and don't care what the fans think.

Also I saw a rumor months ago that the Nilfgaardian armor was actually designed to look like a male body part to be a visual representation of Nilfgaardians being that body part. To be fair the show runner (I really need to learn how to spell her last name) said this wasn't true but man looking at the armor makes it hard to believe.

On a positive note have you guys seen the tv show the in version of The Last Wish hardback book that just came out. I'm more than likely gonna pick it up this weekend to add to my Witcher collection.

Also I do wonder if the season finale of The Mandolorian being one week after the premier of The Witcher will cool the buzz of the show. Not to mention if The Rise of Skywalker is good and people like it Star Wars could completely overshadow The Witcher no matter how good it is. Well unless it's truly great and becomes white hot.

I guess I'm lucky I wasn't swayed by The Midichlorian. Looked rather dull. So my free time will be spent on remaining Watchmen episodes and then The Witcher.

I wonder if we we get tv spots. college football has conference championships coming up. cw shows coming back from a break (I know they suck but they do have good tv spots there)... south park and always sunny are on the last few eps and they normally have stuff like that. theres a lot of opportunities but I've honestly only seen stranger things tv spots or ads whatever you wanna call the association with some of the shows like sportscenter. netflix is strongly behind witcher

I have seen a few Netflix tv spots for a variety of shows. I would expect it. Especially with Thanksgiving coming up.

The Mando even has the cuter super powerful kid.

:hehe:
You don't need to convince on that. It's funny because the plot and character archetypes are very similar. I didn't think about it until you mentioned that. Favreau and Filoni seemingly have a much better handle on these types of characters and how to make a gruff, monosyllabic hero extremely likable.

I still can't believe Bob Iger's balls. I don't love everything he has done with Star Wars (and deep down believe the key problem with the sequel trilogy was Disney execs rushing it), but I kinda love how Disney decides to enter the streaming game right before Netflix is about to premiere it's big, expensive Game of Thrones tentpole series and slaps The Mandalorian down.

I mean, maybe watch an episode of The Mandalorian before making that assessment? You can do the 7 day free subscription thing and then if you think it sucks, just cancel so you don’t have to pay for it.

It's a streaming war man. And really, Disney came out the gate really hard. I have no interest in HBO Max or the Apple TV+. Disney actually justified my paying $140 for three years.

I watched 2 episodes and it's enough to make the judgement. I think it's mediocre.

I had a guy trying to hard sell me Apple TV yesterday while I was getting a phone upgrade. I have no idea at all what exclusive stuff they have on there. I didn’t even really think of them in the streaming wars lol.

it's hard to think about show and say what it is when it's not fully released. I mean we talking about online stream service which isnt even releasing whole season but airing episode by episode weekly.

When Witcher gets released we will know in day or two is it good or bad if we want to know. Either way we will know. Mandalorian is maybe just getting started and it will get better, who knows. Either way I dislike that way of release and Disney's policy btw for streaming service. Because this is not cable network. But they can do that because they are Disney and it's Star Wars. Otherwise if that was any other show, but not in Star Wars universe, nobody would give a crap and nobody would be checking it in weekly, because there is so many good shows on TV to watch.

My approach won't change for The Witcher. If first two episodes end up sucking ass (or just mediocre), I won't be watching remaining episodes. It either works or not. Simple as that. I tried several times to give a show more time to leave a positive impression, it never worked out. So two episodes max. If it's great, it's great right from the start.

I get your point but a show can definitely improve a lot as it goes on, as the writers and actors grow to understand better what they want to do with the characters and as the plot gets developed into something that is more and more involving and themes start to come to the surface. And as the technical crew become comfortable with a show's aesthetic and then are able to fine-tune that.

But you should be able to see the seeds of greatness in the first couple episodes. When I first started watching Breaking Bad, those first couple episodes, I had little idea I was watching what would become one of my favorite shows ever. But there was something about the first couple episodes that did make me think, "Huh, there could be something interesting here."

I think every great shows starts good regardless do you like it or not (personal preference). It's about cinema, or acting or directing, music or just a story. But there is always something which will keep you interested to say at least to give a show another shot and watch another episode.

Last show for instance I dropped was Wayward Pines. There was simply something about that show I couldnt get grip with it and dropped it. Ofcourse show wasnt some critically awarded one to say ill likely miss it piece of cinema/television, but either way if you dont like you dont watch.

Ill certainly watch all episodes of Witcher. Cause I am simply interested in material on which this show is based and games I played. It may end up being mediocre show, but again I am simply interested to see what kind of story and quality of it they decided to tell with having so much material to work with.

It's more testament to see how competent and talented people working on this show are. Because if they are even slightly talented we are on for good ride. And that's all that matters. Quality television. Bar is high recent years.
