Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

She doesn't look like Yen all that much, but I have been impressed by what little we have seen of her so far. And that matters the most to me.

But what do you base that she doesn't look like Yen on? The game Yennefer doesn't look like what she's described as in the books.

From The Last Wish, Geralt describes Yennefer as follows: "...although attractive in her own way, couldn't pass as a great beauty" "...her nose slightly too long, her lips a touch too narrow, her chin receding a little too much, her a brows a little too irregular..."

Btw I just started the book series and am enjoying it very much! I hope they nail the show.

I'm pretty sure in one of the Sword of Destiny short stories she's described as having a triangle shaped face. I also think she's described as having a pointy (pointed?) Chin. And I believe it's the last short story in Sword of Destiny she is also described as having pale skin. Yen is also older than Triss and Triss is described as looking like a teenager. I'm pretty sure that's in the last short story in Sword of Destiny as well.

Haven't gotten so far yet, just finished The Last Wish and I'm in the middle of Sword now. Anyways, I'm sure she'll be fine.

I've said it before and I'll say it again I'll happily get on here and say I was wrong about any of the things that turn out way better than expected. I know I seem like I'm always being negative and I hate that. For me the Witcher went from being this looks cool to just maybe my all time favorite franchise.

The story Sword of Destiny is maybe my favorite of the short stories. I love the interaction between Geralt and Ciri. It's funny, touching and we'll I can't think of anything else to say that might not spoil something for you.

This is how I kinda imagined Yen to look.

Very beautiful, very pale, dark, curly hair, violet eyes, and the look of a woman, not someone who looks like she might still be a teenager. How she is described, someone like Keira Knightley, Katie McGrath or Kate Beckinsale always fit to me.

beckinsale from van helsing for the win
I agree she is my ultimate fantasy casting. I also think Jessica Lowndes would be a good choice. I think a older actress( late 20's - early 30's ) should have been cast because she is a mother figure to Ciri and I think visually a woman in that age range would work way better than having a actress who is around 5 years older than the actress playing Ciri. The Geralt, Yen and Ciri cast would also work for a sitcom about a single father, his senior in high school daughter and her slightly old friend who just started college.

LOL, are we forgetting that Kate Beckinsdale was ****ing terrible in Van Helsing?

I don’t hold that against her because everyone was awful in that movie, but it’s not like her performance or even her look were the gold standard for badass female leads in fantasy adaptations.

i think her look there would be great for yen.... maybe a bit toned down.... i didnt know we were talking about performance, i was talking looks... she's not really good in anything lol

I recently rewatched Van Helsing and like it for its campy and over the top silly acting and plot.

But yeah I meant visually Beckinsale looked like what I imagined Yen to look.

may the countdown begin, ladies and germs

Eh, them critics just need to hyperbole every damn thing now. For better or worse. Some even talk about that phone conversation that Deniro has in 'The Irishman'' as the best acting of his career, and I'm just sitting there looking at my Deer Hunter and Taxi Driver films sitting on the shelf. Gotta get them reading clicks, I suppose.

If they are talking about The Long Night battle then that's not hard to believe. That battle was dog **** in almost every way. But the Battle at Castle Black, Battle of the Bastards, Blackwater Bay, Dany and her Dragon's attacking the slavers, even the Battle of King's Landing and its damn bells will never look awful. Regardless of the quality of the battles in the Witcher.

And there are damn good battles in Vikings and Black Sails as well that this show cant make look awful.

Yeah, I agree with all of that. The Long Night looked like a bunch of idiots with swords wound up on the green screen set of The Hurricane Heist. Just a mess where you could barely tell what the hell was going on. But those other battles were amazing, as was the fight choreography on Vikings and Black Sails. Black Sails especially is a such an underrated show. I still don't know why it didn't get half the attention that GoT did. Maybe it was because Michael Bay was attached to it and that made some people just ignore it.

The Long Night was such a disappointment, no real consequences, and what few consequences that were supposed to exist were quickly forgotten, could barely see what was going on, the entire battle plan for the fight was just a head scratcher, and the ending of it was among the most glaring examples of the season's infuriating habit of actively avoiding satisfying and/or logical conclusions in favor of subverting expectations. So much time, money, and hard work on the cast and crew's part wasted on that battle because the showrunners either couldn't be bothered to care enough to think of a smart battle strategy, or were too incompetent to realize how many issues there were with the battle they'd planned out.

Off topic rant aside, even though early responses can be very unreliable, it is still encouraging that they're positive, really hoping for some brutal fights in this show, if they manage to do justice to Blaviken and the Striga I'll be very, very happy.

There weren't even any major battle scenes in the first season because they didn't know what they were doing and ran out of time and money.
