Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Two episodes in, liking it so far. I think Cavill is doing a solid job; he does a lot of angsty brooding but it suits the character (at least in this adaptation). I also dig the voice. Makes me wonder if I’m some alternative universe, he was cast as Batman instead of Superman, lol. They are twins, after all.

Goddamn.

Sorry, who is this?

Millie Brady

She plays Aethelflaed in Netflix's The Last Kingdom. Shes a good actress. Hopefully she can get a role in a future season of Witcher.

I finished the season, and I'm fully committed to this show. I respect it a lot for not holding the viewers hand and for taking 7 of the 8 episodes to just establish the characters, their relationships, their backstories, and their destinies. Cholotra was fantastic in the role of Yen. Perfectly embodying Yen's pain, rage, vulnerability, and resentment. I think her and Cavill have genuine chemistry and the tender moments between them turned out really well. When she found out what Geralt's wish was I really hated it, and felt for both of them. Geralt taking his anger out on Jaskier hit me right in the soul. Poor Jaskier. :( Calanthe...oh Calanthe. It's rare for me to dislike a character this much while at the same time respecting the things they do. A mama lion indeed.

Yen unleashing that firestorm and all that repressed rage and pain while Cahir watched his prospects literally burn to ash was so ****ing satisfying.

Fringilla needs to die...like a lot.
The brotherhood never should have let her leave the council and return to Cahir. For her to walk into that council and basically say, "I run the show, and you'll like it or die." strains credulity. All of them could have smacked her down hard.

Triss was given the shaft, but I get it. The show can do more with Triss during the Lodge of Sorceresses plot.

I would have loved some flashbacks to Geralt's early Witcher training, but I think they are setting up his flashbacks to run chronologically so we should be getting some of his early Witcher days next season.

The monsters were done really well. I wasnt sure if the show would fully commit to the monsters in the interest of saving money, but every time a monster was on screen the show went all in with the design. The ghouls with their glowing eyes were especially cool.

Vilgefortz was good in the limited screen time he had.

Myanna was lovely as always.

So what do people think about the finale? I think Hissrich ruined that by chopping away Geralt from Ciri in Brokilon. It doesn't hold any emotional weight.

I was fine with it. I was very emotional when they finally meet. I felt like they knew they belonged together. I wouldn't say it was ruined.

They changed things to make it more dramatic for a TV viewing audience, just like the Lord of the Rings movies.

I didnt know she was originally cast as Renfri. What happened?

There were reshoots and this was apparently one of the changes. I don't know if it was scheduling or just wasn't chemistry there or not. Now based on looks alone I almost thought Millie Brady could've made a very good Yennefer or a superior Fringilla. That said, I'm very happy with Anya Chalotra.

Emma Appleton did make for a good Renfri at least. She had a sort of interesting grunginess about her.

I do hope they can maybe find a different role for Millie Brady as well somewhere down the line.

How did they not show any Cavill butt? That is a disgrace.

They also cut Anya's bare butt out of the frame when she stripped for the bath scene. Tho it's possible Anya just didnt want a close up of her ass and asked for that framing. I know girls can be really self conscious about their ass.

And yet we got plenty of boob action

Keira Knightley had similar issues with her onscreen nudity. She was OK with going topless, but less so with her nude backside.

Cavill I imagine was probably very self-conscious about those things. I can't blame him. When you are an actor and you are nude onscreen, that's forever right there. I can imagine how that might mess with your head.

Wasnt entirely sure if that was real or not as Geralt had been hallucinating all episode and the show doesnt hand hold always and tell what time period something is in or if its real or not. I guess we will find out in the second season.

This will be REALLY weird if the second season doesn't start with Kaer Morhen. Plus, the event are shown not only from Geralt's perspective, so I don't believe it's
hallucination.

It took some getting used to on Cavill being Geralt, because of the voice and all, but once that sunk in, I'm fully committed to this series now. Hopefully, since the source material is finished, we'll actually have a legit ending to this.

Bye GoT. Hello Witcher!
It was the same for me. I'm used to game and book Geralt so adjusting to Cavill took some time, but by the end I consider him a legitimate version of the character.

I really cant wait to see what Cavill does with the paternal side of Geralt that develops with Ciri.

But I think they could have approached S1 differently. Once I realized the events were happening in 3 different timelines, knowing where they would have to end up, I thought to myself that I wasn't sure how else they could get to that point in a more conventional way. Using a linear approach would have meant that Ciri wouldn't show up until the end and we wouldn't really know who she is. I'm sure there's still a way to do it, but I'm not sure what it is.

I kind of want to applaud the show for its balls, at the same time I wonder if certain aspects would have worked better if arranged in a different way. The storytelling in the episodes gets very choppy and unwieldy at certain points. Maybe it would have been better to start off with a Geralt episode (do the Blaviken story, have the denouement be where he meets up with Jaskier, cut Torque and the Elves), a Yennefer episode, and then a Ciri episode, and then start weaving them together in the fourth and fifth episodes (starting with the story around the striga), and then have the last three episodes be post-convergence. Something like that.

see i think cavill is doing great. i said it privately to Roose ... its not really about geralt as much as it is the supporting characters and how they affect geralt... its a time thing... adapting...

i love how most were whining about yen and ciri casting and theyve been the best parts... im only on episode 4 though.

Didn’t need realise this was only 8 episodes, I got up to episode 7 last night but fell asleep during it (through tiredness, not boredom).

I am certainly on board for season 2 though.

Can someone explain to me what is Cavill doing with his lips and jaw when he is acting?

it's nice to come up with possibilities but somehow I doubt that's the reason.
