I'm trying to get my older XP PC to share files with my new Vista PC. When I open the network on the Vista, I can see the XP, but when I do the same thing on the XP, I cannot see the Vista. Can anyone here help me figure this out?

Vista is evil and wont let anything in thats why! Ive been trying to do the same thing getting onto a vista laptop, i managed to do it once for all of an hour then it kicked me off again its a right pain.

Are both Pcs on the same workgroup and have you made the Ips static?

A few good ways of checking networks are online (without the use of windows) is in the comand prompt type Net view and it will bring up the list of pcs in the network

What are you actually trying to do?

Do you have UAC turned on, on the Vista laptop? If you do turn it off. It's in the control panel under your profile. That's the issue I had with it.

I want the two computers to be able to share files. I've tried opening the Network section on both computers. The Vista one will see the XP one, but not the other way around. When, on the Vista PC, click on the XP computer through the network, I get an error message about something being mispelled. When, on the XP PC, I click "View Workgroup Computers", I get an error message that this computer isn't authorized. Since both computers are Dells, I called them. But the old one is out of warranty, and the new one, I purchased at Best Buy (big f'n mistake), and Dell won't talk to me. I called Geek Squad, and the guy was nicer and he was saying I may need to "Map the drive?" manually. Any advice, Malice?

I will be honest...
I have used Vista for some things...just never used it in a home environment.

Is the XP machine seeing the vista machine at all...but failing to connect?

When my systems wont see each other it isnt fine, Xp to Xp great! Vista to Vista great! Xp to Vista Errors coming out of my ear holes, i had it set up once transferred a bunch of mp3s rebooted and it went all to pot again.

Vista on its own is fine but try and get it to play with other Os systems and it cries like a little girl

Sounds like I should probably just cough up the $20 and buy a 1GB flash drive. Would probably save me some headaches.

xp can't connect to vista... plain and simple..
i forgot why but we discussed in class about a month ago.
i do believe these a program you can download on ur xp machine to recognize vista but i dont remember ill ask my professor tomorrow

It still uses TCP\IP, so they can, you just have to make changes ot the Vista machine to allow the access....
