New Ben-Hur adaptation

He has issues with tone and setting up the logic of that world, realistic or not. Even the most over the top films has its logic and rhythm.

I tried explaining that in the AL:VH thread and got shot down.:o

Jealous you didn't think of it? :o

Eh, Timor don't really do it for me as a director, Abe Lincoln notwithstanding.

Literally the only way I'd be excited for this is if Martin Scorsese or someone of that caliber directed it.

It doesn't need to be Scorsese to be good, but it sure as hell needs to be better than this guy.

Timur Bekmambetov Takes the Reins on BEN-HUR!
Published at: Sept. 20, 2013, 9:05 p.m. CST

Hey guys! Horrorella here...
Biblical epics are poised to become all the rage over the next couple of years. We have Aronofsky's NOAH, Ridley Scott's EXODUS, a new telling of the Jesus story based on Anne Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, and now, a new adaptation of Ben-Hur.
Rumors have been circulating, but today, Deadline reportedly confirmed that MGM has selected Timur Bekmambetov (NIGHT WATCH, WANTED, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER) to take the film into production. The script is being written by Keith Clarke (THE WAY BACK).
The story was first made wildly popular when Lew Wallace first published his novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ in 1880. It sold a gazillion copies and was later adapted for the screen in William Wyler's 1956 classic BEN-HUR, starring Charlton Heston.
No word on when the film is scheduled to start production, but I imagine they will try to get filming underway soon.
What do you guys think? What will a Timur Bekmambetov BEN-HUR look like? And can anyone fill Heston's shoes?

It's official now?

Cool. I can officially not be happy about it.

I don't understand the reference, but sure why not...

’12 Years A Slave’ Scribe John Ridley Boards ‘Ben-Hur’ Reboot At MGM

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Thursday October 24, 2013 @ 9:17am
EXCLUSIVE: MGM has set 12 Years A Slave scribe John Ridley to do a rewrite on Ben-Hur, a new adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, which Timur Bekmambetov will direct, based on the Ben-Hur spec the studio bought from Keith Clarke (The Way Back). The intention is to begin casting soon and start production on this big sprawling film in the spring. It’s based on the book that for its time outsold every book but The Bible until it was eclipsed by Gone With The Wind. Sean Daniel and Joni Levin attached to produce, and Clarke and Jason Brown exec producing.

http://www-deadline-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/benhur__130819154558.jpgMGM released the 1959 Charlton Heston-starrer Ben-Hur, as well as the 1925 silent film Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ. MGM sold the Heston film to Ted Turner in the 1980s, but the book is public domain. The studio’s decision makers, Gary Barber and production president Jonathan Glickman, loved the spec that is faithful to the book and carves out an identity that is different than the 1959 William Wyler film that focused on the adult blood feud between Judah Ben-Hur (Heston) and Messala (Stephen Boyd).
Ridley most recently scripted Red Tails, but his adaptation of 12 Years A Slave has thrust him into the Oscar conversation. He’s moving into slavery terrain of a whole different kind.
Ben-Hur details the formative story of Judah Ben-Hur and Messala as they grew up best friends before the Roman Empire took control of Jerusalem. Judah Ben-Hur was a Jewish prince and Messala the son of a Roman tax collector. After the latter leaves to be educated in Rome for five years, he returns with a scornful attitude and mocks Judah and his religion. When a procession passes by Judah’s house and a roof tile accidentally falls and hits the governor, Messala betrays his childhood friend and manipulates it so that Judah is sold into slavery and certain death on a Roman warship, with his mother and sister thrown in prison for life. Judah doesn’t die, and vows revenge on Messala which, like in the films, culminates in the famed chariot races. There is another way the script differs from the movie, in that it will tell the parallel tale of Jesus Christ, with whom Ben-Hur has several encounters which moves him to become a believer in the Messiah, and which culminates in Christ being sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate. Intertwined in all this is the lifelong struggle between Ben-Hur and Messala. Ridley is repped by CAA.

Why is it referred to as a "reboot"? I thought that normally only applies to a film series where it has either gone stale or run its course, and they want to revitalise it by taking it in a new direction?

Since the Charlton Heston movie was only a one-off, and made decades ago, how is this in any way a reboot? Isn't it just a remake or a new adaptation? The original wasn't exactly a film franchise.

People seem to overuse the word "reboot" these days, even when it doesn't really apply.

It is a remake. People just keep using reboot because there are so many of them going on too.

Remake - single film
Reboot - film series

It's a remake.

Is it a remake, or just another film based on the book? There's a difference, I guess.

Paramount, MGM Team For "Ben-Hur" Remake

By Garth Franklin Wednesday April 23rd 2014 01:28PM
Paramount and MGM are teaming to co-produce and distribute the upcoming remake of "Ben-Hur".
The new adaptation of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel follows a falsely accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him.
"Wanted" helmer Timur Bekmambetov is directing from a script originally penned by Keith Clarke and which is now being worked on by John Ridley ("12 Years a Slave").
Paramount and MGM have been teaming up a lot lately on films like "GI Joe: Retaliation" and the upcoming "Hercules" and "Hot Tub Time Machine 2".

I gave the man too many chances, but I think Timur Bekmambetov is a hack.

Sweet Chariot! Tom Hiddleston Courted For ‘Ben-Hur’ Title Role

by Mike Fleming Jr

EXCLUSIVE: MGM, Paramount and Timur Bekmambetov set a February 26, 2016, release date on an epic remake of Ben-Hur; have they found their chariot driver in Tom Hiddleston? I hear that he’s the one the studios are courting to play Judah Ben-Hur in the adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, which was the biggest-selling novel of its time until it was eclipsed by Gone With The Wind.

Hiddleston isn’t being fitted for a toga just yet. He has other projects vying for his services, including the MGM pic Me Before You. Keith Clarke, who scripted the Peter Weir-directed The Way Back, wrote the script that MGM pounced on after that company got ambitious following its emergence from bankruptcy and huge hits in Skyfall and The Hobbit. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey joined Sean Daniel and Joni Levin as producers, with Clarke and Jason Brown exec producing. Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave scribe John Ridley wrote the last draft.
