The rumor is that this is a fighting game containing characters from FF 1 - 9 all designed by Nomura.

Here is a Japanese blog with some info

http://ff13vids.jugem.jp/

And according to a message board I frequent this is what it says

"Japanese blogs say that the first characters to be revealed are Warriors (warrior?) of light and Garland from FF1 and Zidane and Kuja from FFIX."

I hope that Setzer from Kingdom Hearts is not a sample of what some of the character redesigns will be since he wasn't all that great.

Its going to be an action title for the PSP according to Wikipedia. Guess we'll have to wait and see how true that is

Like the concept, but no doubt the game will be sub-par at best.

I don't know, Square Enix has been putting a lot of effort into their handheld effort this past year, in fact I can't think of one bad game they've released.

I think he might be referring to the fact that it isnt an rpg. SE excels in that genre but hasnt had the best luck branching out into others. I think people still have a bad tastes in their mouths after Dirge

Yup, that was exactly what I was getting at. I've not doubt I'll love any RPG Final Fantasy sequel, but I'm unsure quite how this is going to turn out. I can't see it being a threat to Tekken, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive et al.

If it is I'll be pleasantly surprised and buy it, fighters being one of my favourite genres, but I'm not hopeful.

Previews: Final Fantasy: Dissidia
First impressions of the PSP Final Fantasy fighting game.
By Shane Bettenhausen 05/12/2007
Rumors of a "Final Fantasy All-Stars" game for PSP that would unite various FF heroes have been brewing for over a year, but few expected them to materialize as a one-on-one fighting game to commemorate the series' 20th anniversary. But then again, the pugilism genre isn't alien to Square Enix: several successful efforts (Tobal, Bushido Blade, Ehrgeiz) stand proudly in the publisher's history.

A brief Dissidia trailer shown at the Square Enix Party 2007 convention in Japan showed a mix of slick CG cut-scenes and real-time fighting action in the vein of Taito's Psychic Force series. As in those games, Dissidia's core mechanics appear to involve characters flying around 3D battlefields while engaging in over-the-top fisticuffs and dazzling displays of magical prowess. Only a handful of characters appeared in the clip, among them FFIV heroes Kain and Cecil, FFIX's Zidane and Kuja, and uberpopular FFVII bad-boy Sephiroth.

It's tough to say much about the game's visual quality based on this insubstantial teaser. While the clips didn't quite match up to Crisis Core's impressive visual standard, they definitely looked good for PSP, and Tetsuya Nomura's redesigned character models even managed to make FFIX's characters more palatable.

We'll return with more on the game as soon as we're able to track down some solid information and visuals.

I hope its better than SE's last fighting game, Ehergeiz. It was alright, but onwhere as good as other fighters of its time
