New Gatchaman CG Film!

Yeah but they dont really make anything THAT great either...

the final fantasy CG movie had pretty damn good (yet dizzying) fights but i was completely lost only because i wasnt a fan..

those ninja turtle people suck ass... maybe because they're new and all but still, TMNT had a chessyly cliche story with dialoge and didnt match the characters mouth movements.

Ultraviolet wasnt wimmers fault :( ... sony.

Who? The Japanese?

Well Advent Children was made specifically for fans and it had some success. Spirits Within was made for the mainstream audience and "joe moviegoer" and failed miserably and was a disgrace to Final Fantasy.

Ninja Turtles is not new. It's been around since the 80's. The comics have been around for over 20 years at least.

The new movie didn't seem to have anything wrong with the lip flaps that I can remember.

Ultraviolet wasnt wimmers fault :( ... sony.

Eh whatever. Equilibrium was an already overrated movie in the first place. Ultraviolet just drove that home to me.

its underrated because people think its overrated..when its not

-_-

It's overrated by the cult circle of fanboys that worship it.

Equilibrium is a decent little sci-fi B movie with some good acting and performances.

GATCHAMAN RETURNS… TO THE BIG SCREEN!

Author: Robert Saint John
Source: Press Release
Official Japanese Site: Imagi Animation Studios

Cover of the original program for the KAGAKU NINJA TAI
GATCHAMAN film. ©1978 Tatsunoko Production Co., Ltd.Imagi Animation Studios announced this week that it will co-produce with Tatsunoko Production a feature-length CG animated film version of Tatsunoko’s popular TV anime series, SCIENCE NINJA TEAM GATCHAMAN. Originally produced in 1972, KAGAKU NINJA TAI GATCHAMAN was in many ways the forefather of the live action Super Sentai genre (known in the US as POWER RANGERS), and GATCHAMAN and its sequels were later made popular worldwide through English adaptations such as BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, G-FORCE and EAGLE RIDERS (originally Gatchaman’s sequel series, GATCHAMAN II). Gatchaman made its first big screen debut in 1978 with a feature comprised of key episodes from the series and a new orchestral soundtrack, similar to Office Academy’s 1977 release, SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO (Uchu Senkan Yamato). More recently, Gatchaman has been undergoing a revival in popularity due in no small part to ADV Film’s release of the original and re-mastered episodes of the series on DVD in the U.S.

The original Gatchaman series followed the adventures of a team of 5 young superheroes who worked on behalf of the U.N.’s International Science Organization to protect earth’s environment and resources against the villainous terrorist organization Galactor, lead by Berg Katse, and their beast-like machines and biological weapons. According to Imagi’s CEO and Vice Chairman Francis Kao, the new film, scheduled for a 2008 release, will still feature the five caped heroes — Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei and Ryu — but it will be based on a “completely new and exhilarating story” and the characters “redesigned with a fresh look”.

Looks like a couple new images were added to the Imagi website as well.

This movie is dead to me if this song is not in the movie. It's bad enough that TMNT didn't have anything close resembling a theme or march that Munroe promised at SDCC 2006. Or even any of the awesome classic theme song from the show . . . or Vanilla Ice :) .

"Tomei! Tomei! Tomei GATCHAMAN! Yuki Yuki Yuki GATCHAMAN!!!"

i think it can if you take away the whole power ranger scenario away from it. get rid of the gooofy as helmets. capes, etc. it'll work.

Well they are pretty clearly keeping the helmets. And they are keeping the bird style wings/capes.

The helmets are protection and battle gear. They need the helmets. I actually like the designs of the helmets in the show.

And again, if anyone here would actually watch the show in it's original unaltered form . . . it's actually a pretty dark, twisted, and ****ed up show. The group itself is pretty ****ed up at times. And not in a Power Rangers kind of way.

Basically I'm saying the original show works. If they do the new movie in the spirit of the original show it could work. But by no means do I think it can be sold to a mainstream crowd.

if its anything like the crap that was TMNT ill pass...

then again the trailer might be misleading like the TMNT one and ill end up seeing it anyways... :(

Wait, what happened to the other screenwriter reported on AICN?

If they are just getting a screenwriter now, no way it will be out next year. Can it even be done before the strike without getting rushed?

It's good news, you can't go much more legit with something like this than Dini. And it's better if Munroe is getting help with the writing, because TMNT was pretty flawed and could've used some script polishing/re-writes.

EDIT:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0436543/

AICN originally reported THIS guy as the screenwriter for the movie. Robert Mark Kamen. What happened here? Did he just write some drafts they didn't want to use?

New teaser image revealed on IGN:

Looks like the Godphoenix in the background. From L to R: Jinpei (The Swallow), Joe Asakura (The Condor), Ken Washio (The Eagle), Jun (The Swan), and Ryu (The Owl).

Sometimes it's one. Sometimes it's five. I hope they keep the action as sharp and deadly as the original anime. Then upgrade it to the level of the NTT commercials.

I'd agree with that. I just hope the human designs don't look as bad as they did in TMNT.

even though it worked in Incredibles, ill proportioned or cartoony proportioned people will and may kill this movie.

Jeff Matsuda was the character designer for the movie, so that explains why they looked like that. If there's an artist out now, who would you want? Or would you prefer they go the Beowulf route? I've always wanted to see Mark Bagley's look translated to animation.

ugh, sorry but i can't stand Mark Bagley....

...i'm still waiting for someone to make a Joe Maduriera-influenced cartoon.

you mean basically change everything that makes it Gatchaman? No thanks.

The designs for The Incredibles looked good and totally worked for that movie. While in TMNT on the other hand they just looked bad.

I'm a bit disheartened to hear about Jeff Matsuda being the character designer. Just FYI, Matsuda is a former comic artist. He did a run on Wolverine with Erik Larsen in the 90's. I think he did a comic book called kaboom.

Matsuda was the character designer for the Jackie Chan series and The Batman.

What designer would I like to see for this movie? They should've gotten someone from Japan to honor and stay faithful to the original designs of the show. Just make them a little more modern in 3-D. I think the characters already had the perfect designs in the 70's. Just make the haircuts and clothes less 70's.

I would've liked it if it was Keiko Nobumoto (Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain), Bruce Timm, or Alex Ross doing the character designs for the show.

I hope the human characters in this movie don't have seriously deformed and mis-shapen faces and all. Especially if they want this to be dark and gritty fair.

Also the Power Ranger thing. Gatchaman was basically one of the pioneers of the sentai genre. That is a team of youth superheroes, multicolored outfits, vehicles and all.

If you actually watched the original Gatchaman, it AIN'T Power Rangers. Because it's not sanitized. People die. People get wounded, and they get hurt. People didn't have perfect childhoods, and they screw up.

Joe Asakura is the most tragic and tortured character of this franchise. Basically he's the Wolverine of this group, except he doesn't have a healing factor.

This isn't a live action movie. You can keep the costumes and they can still look good.

**** I think the Japanese are going to make a live action Gatchaman movie that will probably look good as well. At least I hope.

QFT.
This movie has the possibility of pulling a Godzilla, and piss off the japanese and they IMMEDIATELY make a better movie for half or a quarter of the budget and it be full of win.

also like Sentai, there are certain things that must NOT change or else it will be "power rangery"

They HAVE to say "Bird GO!" if they say "Transmute" they fail.

by the way, anyone remember seeing this AWESOME commercial?

the turtles were the main characters. IMO it was right to focus more on the turtles then o nthe humans. if you are doing a CGI movie with only humans then the designe should and must be better. but still the humans will be cartoony IMO

Yup pretty much.

Just FYI, the new English dub for the original Gatchaman produced by ADV has Ken saying, "Bird GO!" in it.

Here's some updates on the project:

IESB talks with director Kevin Munroe:

http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content& task=view& id=3351&Itemid=99

Imagi Animation has released the first posters for their two next big animated projects, Gatchaman and Astroboy. Plus, Gatchaman director Kevin Munroe talks about the film.

Gatchaman and Astroboy are coming in 2009 from Imagi Animation. Gatchaman director Kevin Munroe recently talked about the making of the film.

He says about the challenges he has faced making this film, “The challenge is really just making an entertaining movie first. That doesn’t mean forgetting the property’s roots, but you have to make sure the film works and can stand on its own. And we’re not just making Gatchaman for contemporary youth, but also a broad audience, the same audience that enjoyed The Matrix and Batman Begins. Gatchaman’s characters are relevant because they are real, and don’t depend on a “timely” adaptation. Themes such as teen angst, family and faith transcend generations, and that’s what we’re looking at with Gatchaman.”

Story-wise, Munroe says, “We’re doing an original story of Gatchaman and Galactor’s first invasion of Earth. Adding a mythology to why they are, where the conflict of Katse and Galactor came from, and explaining Gatchaman’s super powers.”

OK well he did use the Japanese name from Gatchaman for Berg Katse, the main leader for Galactor. Just FYI, in Battle of The Planets he was called Zoltar, and in G-Force he was called Gallactor.

Also I don't get Munroe saying they are adding all that, because as far as I know everything he is talking about was revealed in the series.

Also, typically CG animated films that are marketed as more adult, darker, or more mature in the way he is suggesting don't really have a good track record or are very successful. Look at Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which granted was a piece of crap and shared no familiarity with the much loved property.

There's Advent Children which was a ton of fun and was a true sequel to FF7. HOWEVER, had this movie been given a wide release in the US do you guys really think it would've made a ton of money?

Now look at The Incredibles. The Incredibles did have some heavy and serious ideas and themes in it at times. However it was still overall a pretty family-friendly movie. And Munroe is saying this will be PG-13 level.

I mean I want to see a darker and gritty tone closer to the original anime in the new movie, I'm just not sure it will be successful.

Basically my prediction for this movie is that it would make even less than TMNT did in the US, which was about $55 million.

They are apparently set on making this movie Gatchaman, not G-Force, Battle of The Planets, and Eagle Riders. Gatchaman is the best and original version, but the popularity and nostalgia for this show is for the American versions. The fanbase is very segmented basically, and I think it will be more of a detriment to the movie than a benefit.

Warner Bros./Weinstein Co. to distribute Gatchaman feature:

Warner Bros. and the Weinstein Company to distribute Imagi Gatchaman movie

From a new press release from the Imagi Web site:

IMAGI ANIMATION STUDIOS ENTERS INTO GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
WITH WARNER BROS. PICTURES AND THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

Hong Kong (September 27, 2007) – Warner Bros. Pictures, The Weinstein Company and Imagi Animation Studios agreed upon principal terms for the worldwide distribution of the feature films Gatchaman and AstroBoy. The announcement was jointly made by Jeff Robinov, President, Production, Warner Bros. Pictures; Harvey Weinstein of The Weinstein Company; Imagi Co-CEOs Douglas Glen and Francis Kao; and brokered by The William Morris Agency.

The new pact builds on the success of TMNT, Imagi's first theatrical motion picture, also distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company. TMNT opened in March 2007 at the top of the U.S. box office.

"Imagi is breaking new ground with big action pictures done entirely in CG animation," said Robinov. "It's an exciting new genre, with the potential of attracting big mass market audiences."

"TMNT had the kind of beautifully choreographed action sequences you'd expect from Hong Kong animators," said Weinstein. "The next two films will confirm Imagi's reputation as the world's leading action hero animation studio."

"We are delighted to be allied with the marketing and distribution power of Warner Bros. Pictures and The Weinstein Company," said Glen. Added Kao, "We're making Hollywood-style movies with Hong Kong-style excitement and stories that are fusions of Western and Asian themes."

I didn't know TMNT was that successful. And while I liked TMNT, I only thought 1 or 2 action sequences in it were pretty good. I would hope in Gatchaman they will be better.

Someone needs to tell Kevin Munroe if the classic theme song is not in the movie then it is already OFFICIALLY dead.

A couple other things. In an interview on the IMAGI website, Munroe says that there will be celebrities cast as the voices, and that the human characters will be entirely "human-hand animated". So does that mean essentially that the human characters will be 2-D, hand drawn style and everything else will be CG? This has been done before, in Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence, which I did think looked absolutely amazing, but that was Production IG. And think the animation in Innocence really trumped just about everything in TMNT. Also prefer those designs over Jeff Matsuda (The Batman, Kaboom, and Jackie Chan Adventures) who is doing the new Gatchaman movie.
