New Joe? Fridays: Back in Wack

SIAT, refresh my memory banks here, you're one of those MJ haters correct?

I'm not necessarily an MJ hater. But I definitely haven't had much like for the MJ character. JMS and J.M. DeMatteis are two of the only Spidey writers who have made MJ interesting to me. I really never liked that she was married to Peter.

Though I did like the Sensational Spider-Man Annual. I wish they would write the MJ/Peter relationship more along those lines every once in a while. I liked that. But I wouldn't say I'm a hater on it. I just would prefer a single Peter Parker is all.

Expect the unexpected.:ninja:

Well, that's the thing with Quesada. You expect the unexpected, and then what you actually get is the expected. I'm pretty sure that if I had the time and the motivation, I could map out a mathematical calculation that could accurately predict Quesada's decisions.

Why would you want to torture yourself that way?

Okay, No one else is mentioning it but I'm kinda psyched to see
Spider-Man Kick Ironman's ass
OMD_Picture7.jpg

That's been shown on at least 3 different occasions on the net, and once to my knowledge in print.

Yeah, plus, I don't think it's so much "Spider-Man kicking Iron Man's ass" as it is "Spider-Man throwing loads of webbing on Iron Man, which Iron Man then tears out of and starts chasing Spider-Man again."

Yeah, it's cool for the moment. Then you'll turn the page and it'll lose a little bit of the coolness factor.

On the subject of MJ, I am not an MJ hater, nor am I opposed to their marriage. Why would I be? They were married before I entered kindergarten, and pretty much every comic or cartoon I remembered, barring AMAZING FRIENDS of course, had MJ as Peter's main squeeze. While many who are in the over-30 generation may recall mainstream comics without her being Peter's wife, most of the under-30 crowd doesn't, and that is a major chunk of the reading population. While comics don't attract kids so much anymore (save for manga), comics do attract people in the college age range these days. Or younger adults who now have careers and want to re-capture the stuff they liked back in the simple days of NES and Atari 2600.

However, my big beef with the MJ/Peter dynamic is that a lot of times they become a very boring couple. Yes, I get it, unlike, say, Black Cat, who fell for Spider-Man and sort of tolerates Peter, MJ fell for Peter and sort of tolerates Spider-Man. While it was revealed MJ knew Pete was Spidey since their High School days and that was what kept her after him, that mystique, almost too soon after they were married, things got boring. SPIDER-MAN 3, which I enjoyed a bit, showcased this issue. In real life, most women fawn all over guys who can bench press a few hundred pounds, throw a football or ride a Harely. Spidey's a superhero, you'd think they'd be an exciting couple, especially as they're supposed to be in their mid-20's. But they rarely are. They drown in angst about bills and dangers and whatnot and while this is all very accurate, it makes them seem middle aged. Let's see MJ get more adventurous.

That is part of why "Swing Shift", the Slott/Jimenez FCBD story that introduced the red-headed heroine Jackpot had be buzzed; could this be MJ as a superhero? If done poorly it could be ridiculous, but done well and it could really make that dynamic exciting without MJ dying or something. We've had 25 years of her being civilian worry bait, I wouldn't frown at some alternative if it was done well. Lord knows DC has done worse. I mean anyone in spandex and some lessons from Batman can jump across city streets and dodge automatic gunfire. If Slott wants to be the man to try to pull this off, he could SO do it.

Speaking of Slott, from what I see of his SHE-HULK, he knows the art of not only making the supporting cast of a character vital, but being willing to explore status quo's to create new ones. He made Jen's law office into a dynamic place and he could easily, and finally, do the same for Peter's teaching digs (one of a few alterations that JMS did that I actually liked, in theory, not always in execution).

This is the best news Spider-Man has had in quite a while.

I didn't think you read She-Hulk, Dread.

Anyway, back to MJ...I think all one has to do is read Fraction's Annual. If you don't think the marriage is a good thing, or if you're not a fan of MJ, I really think your opinions will change.

I've never wanted MJ in Peter's life more than after reading that one little comic book.

I read the CW issue and scimmed enough to know Slott rode high with her supporting cast. Some writers seem them as inconvieneces, but he doesn't.

Hey, I'm all pro-MJ. I'll try to track down that annual.

That part of my post was more for the non-MJ fans; I didn't mean to imply that you're one of them.

Track it down and cherish it always. Years down the road, when the 90's become popular again and Spider-Man has a cyborg arm and uses guns and May and MJ have been long dead, I'm going to pull out this gem and read it, remembering fonder times.

Marvel will never kill Mary Jane. Aunt May, yes. But not MJ.

I really wish I had your faith.:csad:

I mean, weren't we here, a couple of months ago saying "Marvel would never kill Captain America" but hey, they did. Mary Jane is so expendable at this point.

Yeah, but Cap's not dead. I mean, he is. But it's not like he's not coming back at some point. Steve Rogers is a character that Marvel could never kill, and then be done with him. Mary Jane is a character, like Gwen Stacy, who if killed, wouldn't come back. She's not as important as her death would be. Whereas Steve Rogers is more important than his death would be. So all that said, if MJ were to die, it would be final. And Marvel's not willing to do that, and they won't.

Good God, I've made that too involved. It makes sense to me. :o

It's true

Dude, if they killed MJ off, and wanted her to come back 5-10-15 years from now, they would find a way

I know this sounds greedy, but I don't want the Slott-man on any of the lesser Spidey titles. I want him writing Spidey Canon. I want him on Amazing. I think he's earned it, and he's shown that he would take good care of the character.

You're pretty much in agreement with everyone else here, bud.

Even before the gift wrapping it looks like Spidey was giving Tony a hard time, if nothing else it will be nice to see a fight a little less one sided.

You forgot the glowing eye. If he has a cyborg arm, he's got to have the glowing eye.
