BvS New Positivity Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!) - Part 1

I'm so happy/relieved to see the film being discussed in a positive light. I had given up on this site due to the enormous criticism against BvS. It's good to know there are others here who love the movie, too.

It's been rough out there but yes, you are not alone, there are others who love or enjoy the movie as well.

I give BvS 4/5 stars. It's brilliant, artful, breathtaking. Repeat viewings help to clarify plot points and character motivations that one may initially miss due to the density and complexity of the film. Superman is explicitly not a killer, and Batman only applies lethal force to those who are trying to kill him when there are no other options. He can't penetrate an armored LexCorp vehicle with rubber bullets or a batarang!

Superman states "This is my world" before sacrificing his life against Doomsday, showing that he has made the choice that Martha gave him: he chooses Earth. Just as he did in MoS when he prevented Zod from turning our planet into New Krypton! Superman's characterization is consistently heroic, selfless. He even smiles as he saves the girl in Mexico! This is a Superman we can all believe in, cherish as a model of what is excellent in humanity.

At the same time, because the film is grounded in a close approximation of the real world, there are consequences for his heroic acts. Jonathan's ghost/memory reminds Clark that the Lang farm was destroyed by his own heroic act. Superman saves Lois at the outset of the story, but he's blamed for the deaths that happen there (which are clearly not his fault, if we are paying attention).

The tone of the film is certainly serious. The subject matter is heavy, even oppressive at times. It's not a film for young children. But there are moments of lightness and humor. And most significantly, in the end the heroism of the protagonists prevails against the forces of destruction and paranoia. This is one of the most complex, artful and important films of its genre ever made.

Really well said, I'm totally with you, especially in Batman's application of lethal force and Superman's selfless nature. In Superman's dying moments, he does nothing but beg for the life of a human being, then, taking the full risk and responsibility of killing Doomsday himself to protect WW, Batman and all the world. Doesn't get more heroic or selfless than that.

Absolutely. I believe that sacrifice is completely well earned and well crafted. With Superman on Lois's lap with Wonder Woman and Batman staring into open space and the frame zooming out, it gave plenty of time to absorb the whole point of what just happened and get teary-eyed. Just brilliant. I don't get why people say it just went by quickly. I literally noticed how long the scene was during my third time and it was longer than you would hope for.

Definitely, it's then followed by more emotional moments like the funeral and Martha giving Lois the ring. The ending was just full of emotion, then elation when we see the soil rise on the coffin. I loved the way the movie ended so much more on 2nd viewing.

I cannot wait for the ultimate edition. its gonna be wiiild

After my 4th viewing I said I wasn't gonna see it again until the blu ray, but I found a theater by me still playing it in IMAX & I'm getting that urge to see it again Sunday , I think I might have problem haha

Just got back from my 5th viewing!
this movie is pure gold.

Can't wait to see what the Ultimate Edition brings!

Seen it 4 times now. Definitely my favorite superhero movie ever. I also think it's the most intellectually challenging, right on par with Watchmen.
- Affleck is my favorite Batman ever.
- Cavill is my favorite Superman ever.
- Gal Gadot blows me away as Wonder Woman.
- Snyder directed the f*** out of this.
- Jeremy Irons is my favorite Alfred ever.
- Chris Terrio's script is ambitious and ballsy as f***.

The movie grows on me more and more each time I see it. It's definitely a lot to take in the first time. Where people say the movie is too stuffed, I honestly would've loved more. I could've handled another hour easily. Making this two movies would've blown my mind.

That ultimate cut is going to be the true film, I think. I feel like BvS is an ambitious, troubled, challenging masterpiece that is waaaay ahead of its time.

What's up, Vortigern? :woot: I agree with the above, and I think the two lines in bold are connected and have a lot to do with that.

So was Watchmen.

I'm also excited for Snyder's Director's Cut. I plan to pick it up on the day it comes out. Anyone have a guess of when that will be?

In the summer. It was said to be July 16, but WB denied that later.

I would still guess July at some point. Probably earlier for the Digital Copy.

I just wish I could see it for a second time... As a Dad, it's always tough to go to the movies at all. But BVS is a huge exception. Please hurry up BluRay so I can watch it on repeat...

The ultimate cut will be on DVD also right?? Not just blu Ray.

I'm gonna go watch it today for the 4th and probably last time. I honestly love it. I think people need to accept that one is never going to get their version of the characters on screen. Theres too many stories for it. I love Batman and Snyder got me into Superman for the first time with MoS. I need the ultimate edition.

After watching it a third time 2 weeks ago, I thought I was ready to wait until the blu ray. But no, I am feeling the urge to watch it again right now.

I knew I have seen this somewhere. No I can see what they have planned for Superman.

Between all that luthor talk of god this and god that and man won't kill god, and can't be all good, and don't come from above..
and the spear.
It will be pretty interesting to see how the handle the direction they are clearly going in.

I agree with all the positive comments on this page. A brilliant and really bold film that explores these heroes in deeper ways than we are used to. I just love it. I'm so excited for JL, WW and all the DC films. :D

You know, I'll share a secret. When the Superman saving people montage happens, and the person says "maybe he's just a guy wanting to do the right thing" with the closeup of Supes and the music peaking, I welled up with emotion. It got to me, and cut right to who the character is.

I love studying different religions and am very aware of the spear of destinyz I can't believe I never thought of the Jesus character nod there. Love it. DC, just keep what you're doing. Not everyone loves it , but oh my god do I love this stuff. This kind of serious tone to these two movies. The heart in mos. imagine having to live your whole life into your 30's misrepresenting yourself to everyone except your parents and how painfully lonely that would be. Yet he still just tries to do the right thing over and over and again into this movie.
He shows his human emotions when he is ready to give up but it's his love for his dad that makes him turn around.
My dad is not into superhero movies but I'm gonna get him to watch mos. I bet he'll like it. He sacrificed so much for me, just like Pa Kent and I love how Superman despite all his power needs people. It hurts him deeply to not be accepted and some just hate him despite all his efforts. He gives his life anyway. That S IS inspiring. Love love love it.

Yeah definitely, when he said "Maybe he's not a God, maybe he's just a guy trying to do the right thing", I was thinking 'shoutout to you for getting it spot on', perfectly summed up the character of Supes. And I think by the end, Batman realised that as well.
